Aesthetics Please please face up critique

Feb 23, 2013

    1. Hi,

I posted this in the gallery, but what I was really hoping to get was a critique, this is my first time doing a faceup in soft pastels (normally I just use watercolor paints). I watched a lot of tutorials and went slowly.

I'm looking for what could be improved or changed to make her faceup look for "ethereal" and professional. Thank you!

    2. First off, her dress-Gimme! I want one in my size~ XD

      But in all seriousness :3

I like her dramatic eyeliner, and especially how you stopped it before going all the way around the tear duct; that a big no no and looks kinda tacky. It looks like cleaning up the tapering ends could be beneficial. I've also seen some people who taper their black liner gently into a deep blue or brown, which can create a cool effect with practice, and make the end of the liner less harsh.

Her freckles are really cute, and not bad at all. Adding a few more smaller, dottier ones in a lighter color can help make it a little more natural though. Theres the splatter paint method too; I personally would rather throw my doll out a window than to use a method you don't have 100000% percent perfect control over, but i'm also an OCD stress case, so keep that in mind.

You say you're usually a watercolor pencil girl? I'd stick to that for lips. I use a pastel base for a couple layers, then finish off with lines of pencil. It helps avoid the blotches!

I can see you've got different colors going on in the brow which is great! I think, though, that you need to work on transitioning the hairs from going verticle near the inner corner, to going more horizontal. If you study your own brows in the mirror, you'll see that hairs only grow vertical in a very small patch

    3. I like the redness around her tear ducts, I think Juris are a hard mold to give faceups to since they have semi-monolids, but I think you've managed to create balance with those redness. :)
I also really like the cheek blushing. Not many people notice in faceups that where the blushing is can either make or break the faceup. So, good on ya!

And now for the things you could improve on: the freckles. If you'd like to be able to get more detailed freckles, use this tip my father taught me on how to create fine specks: go watercolour, dip a tooth brush and rub your fingers against the bristles so that the paint spatters onto the head. Remember the density of water to paint ratio will also affect the outcome so go and experiment! ^^

Eyebrows are really tricky - its good you used watercolour pencils for those, brushes are a whole other ballgame (to which I wish I knew when I was experimenting with faceups). However, watercolour pencils tend to look coarse and pixelated when used alone. Try using pastels instead and then erasing off the excess until you get the shape you want and then gently sketch a few hairs with the w.c. pencil.

      Good luck!

    4. The eyes look a bit undefined. You could experiment with different shades of the same colour above the eye to add depth.

The shading near the eyes could do with a darker colour used more sparingly.

I can't see any lips lines on the mouth. Try to use less gloss and put more pigment in the centre of the mouth and less at the sides.

Try to thin your paint down more when you do freckles, and place them somewhat randomly and in different sizes and intensities.

I really like your eyebrows and eyelashes, but try dusting some pastels in a natural colour over the top of the eyebrows. Also try to build up eyelashes of different paint strengths so that there's a more layered effect.

    5. I can only speak as a 2D artist right now...I've yet to do my own faceup...but my comment has less to do with what you've done and more to do with the fact that the hair is obscuring half of it, and I can't trust the colors of that which I am seeing. I'd like to see a picture of her taken without the wig and in a medium toned blouse/dress, and in focus. Cute as the hair and dress are, looking at it, I have no idea what's being lost because you've photographed her with a very dark wig and a white shirt, both of which play hob with a camera's ability to "catch" the colors accurately. Back off a bit so the camera actually gives a focused image rather than a beauty-fuzz.

Beyond that, I think these much more experienced folks have mentioned pretty much everything I might have said, with one personal preference: a bit of antiquing in the crease of the mouth. Real mouths split. Since the molds don't, something to imply a split is, to my eye, much to be desired. Like everything, I see it way overdone, but a hint of deeper color...a browned tone rather than a pure one, in the crease of the mouth would, to my eye, give her face more expression.

    6. I love her cheek blushing! I agree that her eyebrows could use a little bit of practice. I love how soft and gentle her eyes came out though!

    7. I personally enjoy how the eyebrows look so natural, though they could be slightly more refined. A smaller brush and practice might help. I don't know if it's the pictures but there appears to be quite a heavy load of gloss. Maybe mix it with water next time before applying and not add so thick coat of it. The freckles look to me very artificial. What I would do is gently apply soft pastel on the spot you want the freckle and then slowly apply more so it's finally soft and natural, still to be seen. Also the color seems a little bit off.. maybe it's just me. Get a lot of practice and proper tools. Don't rush. This is still better that I can do ^^'

    8. I believe you should have an artistic hands to do the faceup and it's like how we do makeup :) .. and I agree with the eyebrow refining..
but bravo, you've done a nice job..

    9. I think the coloring lines could be more defined, and it would also help to see pictures of her face-up without her wig.

    10. I think more blending of the pastels could be done? The eyebrows look a little harsh to me but I think it's good looking, at least!
