Planning My First Doll~!

Aug 1, 2015

    1. I have supplies in the mail, so I haven't actually started sculpting yet, but I wanna be as thorough and organized
as possible, so I thought I'd start my journal thread :XD

I'm hoping for 60cm range for height, with an 8-9 head and 14mm ish eyes. All guess work, tho!

Here are my sketches though <3

His teeth might just be sculpted, not sure if I'm daring enough to make a removable piece!
(and yes, he is smirking, so his mouth is crooked~!)

Profiles are hard to draw! :dead but he has a cute little nose and a huuuge mouth, with a sharp/small jaw.
(Still no ears. Not sure if he'll have human, pointed or fin-shaped...)

Now, I have two different front body sketches... I started with the first but thought he may be too stylized?
His rib cage seemed really small and his stomach too long, so I lengthened the ribs and tried to make his
pecs not look like breasts :XD

      First sketch:

      Redo:

Seeing them side by side, I'm not sure which I like better! I'll figure it out once I get it on clay, I guess.

Here is his back, which has quite the ample booty :love
      [IMG]

I have no idea what his arms, hands, feet and legs will look like, but I might just wing it!
He WILL have junk, though. I'm just bad at drawing it and then was encouraged to make them
      "optional", hehehe~

So here's my first and mostly brainstormy post, lol
I'll update when I get started! My hope is to cast in resin, but I have some air-dry clay for starters~

    2. Sketched out the legs and feet yesterday~ keeping the joints pretty simple;
single-jointed unless I end up hating it lol I don't need my dolls to do much
more than stand, sit and hold their arms up/touch their face, so needing all
the potential extra joints just means more work...

Speaking of more work, though! :XD I mapped out potential high-heel legs,
because I really love their sleek, stationary look, but I may have to make
shoes to go with them! (Like Fairyland and Soom!)

Clay should be here any day now, so hopefully I'll be able to get some real work done, soon! :arrr

    3. You are braver than I. I would rather make digitigrade legs than try heels. He'll be crazy glamourous!

    4. Haha! I'm not sure if I'm brave or just insane! :XD we'll have to see~! I really love them though, so I'll definitely give them a shot... Thankfully, they're kind of extra anyway, so they'll be pushed to the end.

Also! Last update until I actually get some real work done, I swear :dead

Here are the arms! The hands I'll probably just "wing", seeing as they'll be slightly curled and very different anyway... that and I hate drawing hands!

The arms will be double jointed, and should hopefully pose nicely, but I'm not holding my breath! :sweat

anyway~! That's it until I have something in clay! :arrr

    5. Your elbows are interesting, very mobile. They would look elegant bent, but might be hard to control. Will you build in teeth to help them catch?

(Hands are murder. Is why my girl has fists.)

    6. Yeahhh, they're pretty close to my FL m-line mnf boy - who poses like a dreaaaam - so my hope is that they function in a similar fashion xD I thought about adding lips like the knees to keep them locked in place. Maybe shaping them to have like, indents or something, so they sit deep in the arm sockets to keep from swiveling without pulling them out first.

I'm definitely less sure about the elbows, haha they'll take the most fiddling for sure!

Alsoooo, he has a name! Harbor <3

    7. Started on the head last night~!

He's got a bit of a "blow up doll" mouth and is a bit more angular than what I think I'm going for,
but when I tried to add more to the jawline... I kind of hated it and just got frustrated :dead

Today or tomorrow will probably be round two! I figured I would shelf him before I jacked the
face too much more, haha gotta pace myself, after all~!!

    8. Crafting at the Last Unicorn party? I look forward to seeing your progress in person (if you want to share).

    9. I'm down to letting you see him~! (Hopefully by then he'll look more presentable, he looks worse now that I scrapped the lips :XD )

We have the room to play around, too. Got the whole weekend, after all!

    10. What type of clay are you using?

    11. Premier! :XD

It got kinda soupy at the end, but I like it enough~

    12. Some updated pics of Harbor~

And here's him compared to my Dream of Doll Ducan, to put him in a bit of scale!

Overall, he's coming along pretty nicely and I still like him BUT there's still major work to be done.
I think I've drifted from what I originally drew(which is okay, I guess) but I think I liked the more
narrow face. He seems a bit... wide, when compared to other SD heads and that could just be his
nose? but I'll work on it! Either way, I think I want his head a bit smaller, since his body is gonna
      be on the smaller side...

Comparing him to my first pictures, I think his eyes might be too big, too. I know they're super
uneven right now, but my want for bigger eyes might have to be reconsidered lmao I also somehow
made the tip of his nose way big? He doesn't have nostrils yet, so I'll leave it alone for now.

The main focus will be on getting the mouth "right". There's only enough room for some teeth,
so I'll have to move the lower lip down to make more room and shave down the upper lip to
minimize the "duck lips" :XD It's a fun look, but right now it looks like he's pushing his lips out to
make a kissy face when I want more of a pulled back smirking look... Hmmm! Either way, they're
a bit too far from the face, lol.

He's still so soft and lumpy though, I may have to push off working on him until I can get some
sandpaper and smooth him out/shave stuff down.

Lots of work but he's coming along faster than I expected, to be honest!

    13. props on getting him to look like the sketches! I think it'll be hard to make the head smaller without having to restructure all of his features, because as it is they look pretty well balanced with each other when it comes to placement in the face and distance to each other (exceot that maybe the eyes are a tad close together). Are you planning on casting him? Because then you could also consider finishing this head in the size it is now and look for a casting material that has quite a bit of a shrinkage rate in order to make a second, smaller master.

    14. Thanks~! He's a bit more angular in 3D, but I think getting the mouth worked out will up
the sketch-to-clay accuracy :XD I do plan on casting him and had thought about possibly
shrinking? Not really sure how to do that though, so I may just fiddle around and try to
fix it other ways before doing that.

I think if I narrow the bridge of his nose and make the eyes just a touch smaller, I can
give the illusion of a smaller head, you know? He's not too big, yet, so I think that might
work. I'll wait to pass too much judgement until I've had a chance to sand down all the
      bumps and lumps, though!

Ducan is on a 64cm body and has a pretty big head too, so if I just don't make Harbor any
BIGGER lol I can always just make the body a bit bigger than I'd originally hoped.

It's not a huuuuge concern of mine right now, so long as he doesn't look too much like a
bobble-head on his body or any potential hybrid bodies! :D

    15. Long time, no update! :dead I've been weirdly unmotivated for some reason but I've
decided that I really wanna try to get Harbor's head finished in time for the Resin Rose
BJD Expo next year! I think I can do it, if I dedicate more time maybe every night or
so to working on him - sit down and fuss for an hour at a time so I don't get frustrated, lol.

I played with him last night and decided to shave down his face pretty dramatically.
He was just feeling really flat-faced and bloated? Photographed really well, but irl he
just felt really... off. So I cut him down a lot in the nose/cheek area and plan on drying
him out to sand down even more. His nose is too small now and one eye is pretty
wonky, but the lips look much better! :XD

I built up the back of his head too, so he'll hopefully fit wigs okay, but obviously I won't
know much more for awhile lol still working on getting the 'smirk' right, and no teeth.
Here's to hoping I get a surge of motivating in the next few months~!

    16. What type of clay are you using for your doll? Thanks.

    17. Hi there! I'm using Premier :arrr

    18. Looooong time no update!

I've been feeling kind of, idunno, uninspired lately :pout been busy with life and all that, but to help get some juices flowing, I decided to rough out a body! I kind of like it~! Ran out of clay, so I'm at a pausing place again :XD

      :arrr

    19. good job at the collarbones! they seem elegant. ah, there's so much clay that goes into making a body! for the few projects I did I've always been looking at the block of clay available- then at my body sketches and thinking 'naaaah, 't will be fine, it's going to be hollow after all.' only to end up seeing my project swallow up the whole block and more @_@

are you going to sculpt the legs separate or will you sculpt them on?

    20. Thanks~! They're one of my favorite parts of a body <3 so I wanted them to be fairly prominent hahaha

but totally! I might have made my core a bit small, but I really have no idea what I'm doing LOL I knew I only had so much clay, so I just went with it and stopped when I ran out/reached an okay spot for it to leave it. I plan on attaching legs when I have another go at it, and once I figure out a good way to secure him into some sort of base. Right now the majority of his rough sculpting is focused on the front, so he still needs shoulders and butt haha I'll measure out the legs and probably put thick wire in the straws before attaching him to like, a block of wood to stand him up. I just smoothed everything out down there to make it easier to sand down and figured I'd leave attaching legs for later!

    21. The post holiday blues hit me hard this year :dead but I'm slowly gearing back up to wanting to work on poor Harbor again!

Sculpted his booty and back this last weekend, worked more on his head too, but I don't have pics hahaha

... He will definitely need custom pants and I am definitely not sorry about that :love

    22. Hips for days. He'll look stellar in corsets once you're done.

    23. That is the plan~! :love

he is a touch too skinny when looked at from the side? Right in the small of his back needs built up more but I'm sure everything will look different once I cut him apart for jointing, anyway, so I'm not too worried.
