physical shops selling BJD in canada? - LOOKING VERY LIKELY!

Jun 30, 2005

    1. this might be weird to ask... but I know a guy on msn who is a (male) police officer in canada. I was talking to him about how I collect BJDs blah blah blah...
and then the next time I spoke to him he was like "yeah I was in the chinatown area and I saw some shops selling those dolls you were talking about"

      O_o
Is this just him being a typical male and not being able to tell an american girl from a BJD... or what? I HAD shown him pictures of several dolls.

So are there any physical stores in Canada? I believe he's in Calgary.

      thanks everyone! :D

    2. *I* live in Calgary, and I'm pretty darned sure that we don't have any dollfie shops around. If there are: WHERE. WHEN. HOW MUCH. I will go and raid them in their sleeps.

Downtown, though, there's this kind of pawnshop place, with two feet tall scary-ish dolls that are, as you can probably guess, SD sized. OR, come to think of it, in some places in Chinatown and in some places like the T & T supermarket, you can buy these ten inch size dolls that have real glass eyes and look *kind of* like dollfies. You wouldn't know, though, because all their joints are covered- they're geisha dolls. :3.

I have one. She's pretty. Her name is Mummy Fortuna. :3.

maybe that's what he was talking about...?

      Gah, I dunno.

Unless he actually *saw* somebody downtown or in chinatown carrying aroudn a doll, which is *entirely* plausible....Zoi and buboe do live here. >3.

And, I do too. XD. But, my doll is stil being saved for. :3.

    3. ahhh yes... I didn't think there would be dolls for sale there! As I suspected it was probably just that whole male 'a doll is a doll' thing. Thanks very much!

    4. I'd looooooooove to know if there is a placethat sells BJD stuffs in canada *.*

    5. That would totally make MY day. ^_^

    6. Are you kidding? I'd....I'd have to get a credit card. XD.

And too bad you can't trust those men for anything, ne? Getting your hopes up for nothing. XD.

    7. Or he could be looking at ball-jointed anime figureines/dolls.

(I think he might just be trying to impress you. ^^;;; )

    8. *sigh* I though that maybe someone might of found a shoppe... :(

    9. That would be nice. *_* Despite being far from Calgary, a good friend of mine goes to Uni there, and she's a huge BJD fan.

    10. I live in the Toronto area, and NO there aren't any BJD's in ChinaTown.
But I saw one or two a while back in a store in Vancouver, a hobbystore.

    11. I can understand that in vancouver, as it has a HUGE asian population and chinatown.

Calgary's is laughable. Not as bad as some (*coughedmonton*) but definitely not big enough to support an SD for sale.

    12. omigod okay update update :D

I asked him to go back, and gave him a list of brand names so that he could check.... and and and he found customhouse and souldoll dolls!!

the clincher for me was when he said that he liked this particular doll called "paris ____ of fate" because "she" had a sword...
that's a 40 edition limited souldoll in CALGARY XDDD

this is what he said about the shops (since I'm in australia... and have never been to canada... I asked for directions for you guys!):

"Its in the Kensington district of town, in conjuction with the 17thave boutiques
Pretty new place though, I think its been there for just 2 years now? Not too sure, I never really started paying attention to them untill I talked with you.
And theres another one on a main road called McLeoud, right before 58th S.E. Called "Chinook Hobbies West. The other places ( the ones in Chinatown) looked like they were legit, but I could not ask (language barrier, I can only swear in Chinese ) so I couldent really confirm them for you."

they're obviously not doll only shops... but if they have customhouse dolls omigod!! XD
someone go out and find this place!! :D

AND TAKE PICTURES!!! I wish I lived in canada now :(

    13. OMG o_o

I live in Calgary...and travel by Chinook Hobby West ALOT.

...*thinks of ways to convince parents to drive her around town later*

Thats still a bit hard to believe...since I've never seen them around those areas before...and never though Calgary of all places would sell BJDs...but that would rock.

    14. well if someone could go have a look that would be great.... if not he said he would take pictures next time he was around there.
I love the idea of a 6'3" cop in uniform standing taking photos of dolls XDDD

but the whole "paris prince of fate" thing made me think he must have seen some around there... being a complete non doll person, I mean how likely is it that it was some other random doll with a $1500 pricetag that just happened to have the same name and similar costume?

    15. ... that really, really surprises me. I may have to eat my hat. And take Kika to meet his more masculine brother. *laughs* ^_~

Any way of finding out the name of the Kensington shop? I'd really like to check this out. But I don't really want to wander around the entirety of Kensington blind. ^^;;; I'll take pictures if someone knows the name of the store. ^^

I'm pretty sure I've been to Chinook Hobbies West when I was looking for Liquitex before I got Kuro in October of last year. It's mostly a model train store, there was no SD there at the time, but I think they were just getting into other kinds of models....

    16. On McLeod Trail? In li'l ol' Calgary?

Hmmmmm. I might have to take a detour to Calgary if I make it to Edmonton this trip! :o *extremely curious* :D

    17. Shit. Paris Prince of Fate. Must go die now. Must find doll now.

      SHIT.

      I LOVE HIM SO MUCH.

      XD.

    18. **wonders where in Canada Calgary is**

      Is it near BC?

      **totally clueless**

    19. It's in Alberta, the province right next to BC and above Montana. It takes...maybe a day or two to get there from Vancouver by car, at least as far as I remember. :)

    20. Omg *calgarian* I may have to see into this. *pouts at being a gimp atm T_T* By the time I can go check it out it'll be gone I bet... :(

    21. Holy poo!!! I'm nowhere near Canada, but good luck, guys!!!

    22. Dude! O_O Omg!

I'm in Canada, but I'm no where near Calgary. Now, if someone can find a shop that sells BJDs in the little ol' Maratimes, I'll love them forever.

    23. *chuckles* That's the one! I'm much more curious about this shop in Kensington, though...

    24. I go to Kensington pretty often..I've never seen any BJD o_O

    25. Any news, folks?

    26. *shakes head* I'm still waiting for the name of the Kensington store, it's pretty big to be wanderng around blind. ^^;

    27. Splynterhayde and I are off to check the validity of the Chinook Hobby store in just a few minutes, so I'll keep everyone posted on what came of that. :3

    28. Yay, I was planning to go...but no one would drive me over there and my parents lack trust in me going on the bus.

      *Excited*

    29. As a precaution, Splynterhayde called the hobby store ahead of time, and this is what she said:

'The guy on the phone said 'no, they didn't carry anything like that'. I asked him all the questions, the whole bjd thing and I gave the brands and he said 'no, sorry'.'

I work very near there and I could still go check, and Splynterhayde and I are planning to canvas Kensington tomorrow for any kind of likely store. *_* I may bring one of my boys with me to show them...

Any luck on finding anything specific in the Chinatown area? I'm willing to go look there on Thursday.

    30. And...change of plan again. x3

Splynter and I are off to Chinatown to poke around, then Kensington tomorrow, and I'll check the Chinook store when I'm on break at work.

Wish us luck. *_* If anyone else is looking, tell me so I know what you find!

    31. good luck!!!
The guy is going to try and get photos... but I'm on a very limited usage internet plan here so I can't be online much and I don't know if I'll catch him... I hope so though!!

    32. That would be awesome. ^_^ And yeah, even if someone can find out the name of the store I'll go check it out and take pics. ^_^

    33. Splynterhayde and I combed the likely places and Chinatown and came up empty. I brought along my boy as an example to show a store owner, and she said she'd never even seen one, and it was unlikely I'd find such a thing in Chinatown. O.o; So mysterious~

So Splynter and I are off to check the Chinook Hobby Store tomorrow, despite what the guy on the phone said. :3

    34. Hey there guys.

Basically, I'm reporting what buboe said and our search yesterday was basically fruitless.

We checked around the Dragon-something mall in chinatown, as well as that little mini mall next to it, oh, and osme imports store, and all three places didn't have 'something like that'. However, alot of likely places in the mall were closed for the day, so we might go back to check again then.

Today, despite what the crazy man on the phone told me, we'll check that Chinook Hobby Place. before I go to work. ^_^.

I'm dying for that Paris. XD.

    35. i really doubt you'll find anything. I know Chinatown really well, never seen it.
I think you're out of luck.
I have alot of BJD owning friends in Toronto, told then, and they said whatever it is..doesn't exist.

    36. *nods* Re: Calgary Chinatown - me too. Unless he can give the name of the Kensington store I'm not going looking... I'm more inclined to believe that he's just trying to impress her. (Gomen! I'd love to be proven wrong!)

I just can't imagine there being a large enough market for BJD in Cowtown to warrent a store having them, even for display...

    37. Ditto for me. I was pessimistic from the start (because of my naturally loving nature 8D~), and now I just think he was mistaken, or as Zoi said. I don't think that Calgary has any such thing. :3 And I nearly died the day I looked, so until he can provide a name, I am also firmly rooted into my seat. XD

    38. NO.EFFING.WAY.

I so can not believe that there are BJDs in Calgary. SRSLY. Thats messed. I have seen none in chinatown but I dont know about hobbywest... I used to go there all the time when I was little and before I was into BJDs damnnnnn! >o<

    39. If you live in BC and can contact Featherfall I don't think they mind showing you what they have in stock?

    40. There is also My Favorite Doll in the Toronto area that sells some DIM, AoD and Elfdolls...not that this helps you out west but it at least gives you a place to find those models without customs hassles.

    41. Pira: I'm an idiot but is it an actual store or an online shop..? I want to go and drool at dolls now~

    42. They have an actual store...and you can shop online (which makes sense due to pre-orders)

If you go tho their front page (such as it is) and scroll down ~ you will see that they actually have a shop...a bricks and morter store filled with mostly vinyl dolls but they have their own line of AoD dolls called KIO I think, carry Elfdolls and a few D.I.M....now do they have those IN the store I don't know. I have not been there nor have I purchased from them ~

Their address is: 4181 Sladeview Cres Mississauga

(gosh what a horrible to navigate website) :|

Anyway ~ I have figured that should I want to buy an elfdoll (aside from the ones that they don't offer) that I will probably go to them and patronize a Canuck shop. I do wish they'd or Featherfall would carry some other lines (I keep sending little notes with suggestions to Featherfall about that...nice people to deal with) :aheartbea

    43. You Toronto people know about My fFavourite Doll in Mississauga, right? Beautiful show room, AoD dolls available for order and clothes/shoes/wigs/eyes on site for ABJD's. We bought beautiful boots yesterday, and new eyes and a lovely wig for my daughter's doll. The person who runs it is wonderful - lets you try everything on your doll.

    44. I have been DYING to go to a store, because I`m always super scared and nervous about shipping (i.e. what if it breaks? ) So if there are any even remotely-ish stores like that, please let me know! (Soooo yes, I`m not sure where else this could go in terms of forums). . . . :chocoberry

      Baibai lufflies!

    45. I don't really think there's any store who sell bjd in ontario but if you are worryed about buying online you could maybe buy second hand from someone in ontario and meet with them if they aren't too far.

As for shipping it's usually really safe! I ordered 3 dolls directly from compagnies and never got any problem =) And if I had the compagnie would have sent me parts. It's usually very safe since ems is usually good(stuff do happend but not often)

    46. Mmm...I think My Favourite Doll might sell dolls? Elfdoll if I recall correctly. Honestly you're probably gonna end up wanting a doll that a)you can't find second hand, or b)won't be sold anywhere near you. Cause Mother SD is sometimes a beetch. Really? Don't worry about the shipping. If something breaks you can send it back to the company and they'll replace it. ^^

    47. Haha thank you. I just recently saw the new dolls on eluts, and my first thought was. . . Must order NOWW! Haha, so yeah. Thanks for the help though! XD

    48. I know Featherfall is in canada, but I'm not entirely sure where. Not very helpful, I know, sorry.

    49. Featherfall is located in B.C. I'm located in Ontario, and I've purchased a doll from them. The doll arrived safe and sound. And like others have said, if something were to go terribly wrong with the doll in the mail, that is what insurance is for :)

    50. . . . You get insurance?

    51. Got some bad news for you folks. My Favourite Doll no longer carries Elfdoll, as Elfdoll has dropped their retailers like a hot rock. MFD also no longer carries AoD, i'm not sure why on that side... *sighs*

Therefore, MFD no longer carries ABJD companies as we know them. They do have a few leftover Elfdolls for sale, a few of the flowerdoll elves, and one Ruru, one Emma and one Hazy left. :( They do carry vinyl american companies of bjd...but I myself am not looking for those. I'll probably default to Featherfall and Sakura Den for my Canadian orders.

On the other hand, they do have lots of clothing still, great Monique wigs, shoes, and a limited selection of eyes. The clothing is also usually on sale.

On the other hand, for you Canadian shoppers theres a couple stores in Markham that sell dolls shoes for really really cheap and MSC Flat UV cut for $18. One is a model store in a mall called First Markham Place (MSC UV), and the other is Smart Maple in Pacific Mall (shoes). I think First Markham also a Smart Maple.

    52. Oh my gosh THANK YOU!! We're planning a trip up to Markham for next Saturday, so this is PERFECT timing!! I even know where that Smart Maple is in Pacific Mall - I usually buy Re-Ment there.

    53. Okies, does anyone know of anywhere in Manitoba (preferably southern) where doll supplies or (heaven forfend) dolls could be sold? I know it's a longshot, but I would be interested!

      .hlp

    54. Got some ReALLY bad news for you folks...MFD is going to no longer carry BJD stuff. So far their Kio clothing has been discounted 50% off and so have their eyes. Some of the clothing I wanted theyre completely sold out of...I went this weekend and I believe one of the nice ladies who works there?? (or was really familiar to the store) bought just about half the leftover stock of clothing. :( They still sell MSC and other things like Monique wigs, but the BJD sources as we know them are just about all gone. Lucky me, I managed to pick up a ton of clothing for dolls i'm expecting and a few pairs of eyes for the dolls I know I have coming in. The eyes are MAD cheap right now, if you can get them, do it! Acrylics go for about $3, $4 (nice acrylics) and their glass eyes are going for $10. Canadian.

    55. Sakura Den is an Online shop run from Winnipeg (at least I'm pretty sure the owner is a 'pegger). I know the owner had a table with items at Ai-Kon last July and then had a table at the Comic Convention in October.

    56. I know Smart Maple and One's Better Living (in Pacific Mall/Market Village) sells a lot of Re-Ment items and other cute things for tiny sized dolls like furniture, but I never knew there were stores in First Markham Place that sold doll shoes... @_@ Actually I'm surprised there are any doll things for sale in Canadian stores at all. xD
The best luck I have to buy doll things here is to go to anime conventions... >3<

    57. Oh, that's so cool! I'm not sure where my visa work might be as of July (am Canadian, living legally in the USofA) but I've been curious about Ai-Kon and may head up there if so, that would be exciting! I wonder how dollies at the border would go over... But that's encouraging at least! :D Thank-you so much!

      .hlp

    58. Canadians in the Toronto Area, you can buy MSC UV Cut for $14 plus tax at a store in First Markham Place called ToySquare. DONT TELL ME THAT AINT CHEAP! I bought the last can the last time I was there but they get shipments every monday, so i'm going to tell them to restock. Great. Now that you guys know about that, it'll NEVER be in stock ;)

    59. I saw them at both Smart Maple and One's when I was there in April - they are the sneakers that are key chains, you just buy two of them and take the key chain parts off. They were way too big for any of my girls, so I didn't look at the prices at all, sorry.
