Contest Photostory Contest: Nine Lives ~ WINNER ANNOUNCED!

Aug 4, 2013

    1. Nine Lives Photostory Contest

Whether your dolls are dolls, personalities, muses, art or characters, you've probably imbued them with qualities that transcend their "thingness," and these qualities probably have a context. Interpret the theme "Nine Lives" through the lens of the anniversary theme "Deconstruction/Reconstruction." You can integrate these concepts however you choose; your story could be about indestructibility, longevity through transformation, luck in the face of adversity or something else.

You may present your story in these formats from our Photostories prefix labels:
      • Poem/Lyrics: Use this for stories that illustrate a poem or song. You can also use it to illustrate quoted prose text.
      • Narrative: Use this when you are telling the story through a narrator. Narratives are usually told from a 1st person or 3rd person point of view.
      • Silent: This prefix is for stories without words, where only pictures tell the tale.
      • Dialogue: This is for conversation stories. Use this if you have a script of your characters talking to each other.
      • Comic/Manga: This may also be a conversation story, but here the text appears in the pictures (in speech bubbles or free-form), as in comics and manga. (Note: "Comic" does not mean "funny." It's a format. There are many comics that are serious, dramatic and tragic.)

      Who May Enter?

Contests are open to all members who are in good standing who have joined on or before June 30th, 2013, excluding forum staff. (The staff may submit stories for fun, but they will not be included in the voting.)

      Rules
      • Each contestant may submit only one entry.
      • The story must be contained in one post--1 image to a maximum of 12 images.
      • All pictures must be submitted in JPEG format, 600 pixels on the longest side at a resolution of 72dpi.
      • Entries will be accepted through August 18th 11:59pm EST. AUGUST 25TH, 11:59 EST If you're unsure of your local time, please check this COUNTDOWN CLOCK.
      • If your entry is received later than the deadline, it will be disqualified.
      • If your images are larger than specified, your entry will be disqualified.
      • If you use more than one post to complete your story, your entry will be disqualified.
      • Your entry may appear only in the contest. It may not appear elsewhere on DoA or on a personal journal/blog site.

      Voting

After August 18th, the forum staff will each vote on every story, then tally their votes to determine first, second and third place winners. All stories submitted will be posted in rank order on Sunday, September 1st.

Stories will be rated on a scale of 1 to 5 in the following areas: conception of theme, use/posing of doll(s), quality of photographs, coherence of story/character(s). Yes, these are subjective measures, which is why we have a group of people with widely differing aesthetic sensibilities pooling their opinions.

    2. Entries are now open! :D

    3. Cool, I am still working on mine!

    4. This is really interesting..I wonder if I can organize and imagine my girl's whole story together in this short time. I know a lot about her but not ever every secret yet I'm sure. :)

    5. I was just looking at the entry form and it is a little confusing, please can I have some help. How do we submit our images to it, do we post the direct links from were it is hosted or can we do it as an image code? Like we would do if we were posting on the forum?

Also do we have to just include the images/story? Or do you require other information like crediting the dolls used?

      Thanks :)

    6. You'll need to format your entry just like you'd format a post in the Galleries. Do not add any credits or explanations. Use the preview button to verify that your entry is formatted correctly, or compose the whole thing in a PM to yourself to make sure you've gotten it all the way you want it to read.
      :)

    7. I see, that makes sense, thanks for your help! I will try and submit it now!

    8. A countdown clock has been added in the first post :D

    9. Stupid question, so does this mean that we're following the doll's life itself like the Velveteen Rabbit or their character story? I want to enter but I was unsure of which it was. ^^'

    10. You can interpret it however you'd like. Doesn't even have to be that literal. :)

    11. Fantastic! I know what I'll be doing after work everyday now! haha We need a "Complete all the contests" meme for this.

    12. I only just found this, and I have an essay due tomorrow at 4pm (which, with time conversion added in, is the deadline time haha), and I might use this as an insentive to actually get it finished!

Edit: I have a quick question - for this challenge, are we able to have artistic nudity? It is a little central to the idea I have, but I can change to have lingerie if it'd be prefered over complete nudity :)

    13. artistic nudity is allowed, though any NSFW entries will be labelled as such before display :)

    14. The deadline for this contest has been extended to AUG 25th, midnight. Double check the first post for a countdown clock if you're unsure :)

    15. Is it authorized to use off-topic dolls and toys as props and accessories in the story ?

    16. Just like in the Photostories, subforum, off-topic dolls and toys are allowed as props and accessories. :)

    17. A quick question - I thought from the rules that we needed to select a prefix, but they aren't available on the entry form. Do we just note which category our story is for at the top?

    18. ^u^ The prefixes available in the Rules of this contest were put as guidelines for submissions. You do not need to note the prefix category when submitting your entry. Usually they're self-explanatory when we see the photostory :D!

    19. YUS! The weather is due to be good for the next two or three days, which means I can actually get my entry ready! I can't wait to see how everyone interprets the theme - I mean, I know how I'm interpreting it, but that's probably not the way everyone else will!

    20. Thank you! My story is now submitted.

QUOTE=MissCarrion;10249325] I can't wait to see how everyone interprets the theme[/QUOTE]

Me too - I think everyone's different entries been the best thing about the anniversary so far

    21. I would be pretty shocked if people did it the same way as me! I went a bit odd with mine, I can't really say much more then that. I found it a hard concept to think about though, I was really unsure what to do at first and it took me a while to think of something. So I would like to see what others have done also.

    22. Whelp, I've got my entry in. I truly can't wait to see how other people interpret this! And now, onto finishing my people sized dress that I need for tonight! (for reference, it's 3pm here!)

    23. Not sure if this will get answered in time, but I'm confused by the size specification I don't want to get disqualified. It says 600 pixels on the longest with 72dpi? I know 600 pixels supposedly 8.33 inches which at 72 pixels per inch is that what you meant?

    24. 600 pixels on the longest side is really all you need to worry about. 72dpi is standard resolution for web viewing, so if you are resizing in photoshop just make sure you set it to 72dpi before selecting your height and width in pixels.

    25. How do you submit photos in the Entry? It says we can't have it in any other place but the submitted form? And it says they should be formatted in [IMG]

    26.
    27. I'm confused because I have to upload it somewhere to get the URL/add the link but it says we're not allowed to post it publicly anywhere else besides here. sorry for so many questions just want to get this uploaded in time. thanks

edit: Ah I'm going to try and put them on flikr under private and see if that will work.

    28. Edit: nevermind figured it out it doesn't copy and past from the response, so I did [IMG]

    29. Kitty Blue - glad you got it sorted! I can't wait to see your entry :D

    30. I am really looking forwards to reading people's entries because I am curious to see what people have done with the same concept. I think it is going to be really interesting to see! Especially how imaginative and creative people in this hobby can be! So yeah, I am pretty excited now.

    31. Me too! I can't wait hehe. I bet the mods have a tough time judging it!

    32. It should be fun! All the contest must be really hard to judge! I can see why this would be hard because there are so many completely different ways you can do this, also since there are a few elements to making a photo-story you are going to get some entries that excel in one area but are weaker then others. So one story might have wonderful photography, but the story might only be average and visa versa. So I can see why the judges are doing it in points categories!

Although I know what talent is on this forum so I am really interested in seeing what people do!

    33. I am itching to see these entries haha, I bet they're all amazing!

    34. >.< i can't wait myself

    35. *hops from foot to foot* I so can't wait to find out the winner of this and see everyone's entries!
