Up till now my only experiences with were with a Sony cybershot digicam. It takes grainy pictures-no matter how many different setting or lighting adjustments I try. I've had an opportunity to purchase a used Nikon D100 body to try to improve my work. But the owner will let me use some of his lenses to play with it-but I will have to purchase another eventually. Any feedback on what might be the best all round lense for under three bills? I'm most interested in taking clear close up shots of small details.

Coolness, thank you! These dslr cameras can be an expensive proposition. And I'd rather be putting my cash into materials to build things. But I'd like to be able to eventually sell some finished dolls to help out with getting the jewelry casting side set up too. And you need excellent photos to do that.
