Winners, please post into Ask the Moderators to claim your prize!
Include that this is for the Photography Contest "Stuck on Luck", and which category you won in (and for 1st/2nd place Overalls, mention that too). Prize choice order will go by 1st place, 2nd place, Technical, and Theme Development, and the mystery doll prize will be revealed to the winners.

We will also need you to include your full name, shipping address, email address, and phone number, to make sure your prize can reach you safely! (Also please remember that not all prizes will ship right away, as some will be produced only after the Anniversary period. So if you're told that for your prize, remember to let us know if there will be any upcoming changes of address.)

Again, thanks to every superb entrant, and thanks to everyone who voted!

      THE CONTEST:
Some people believe they're always lucky in life. Some believe they have nothing but bad luck. Others believe there's no such thing as luck and everything in life depends on a person's own efforts.

In this contest, you must create a photostory in comic-book/graphic novel style that illustrates one of these statements:
      1. Luck loves me. I'm just the luckiest fool in the world no matter how I mess up.
      2. Can't fight it. If it wasn't for bad luck, I'd have no luck at all.
      3. It's never luck, it's effort and skill. Luck is just a delusion.

      Contest Rules
      1. The photostory format must be comic-book/graphic novel style, which can use stylistically designed image montages or overlapping/montaged visual frames within a single photo, and a distinct visual style to tell the story.

      2. All photostory text must be visually incorporated into the panels/photo layout; dialogue/narration must be enclosed in voice "balloons" or otherwise merged onto the photos.

      3. Photos must be the primary method of story telling. You may not have a primarily text narrative with just a couple of static illustrations thrown in.

      4. You are limited to 12 jpg images in total. Your images must be in jpg format with a maximum longest side of 800 pixels and a maximum file size of 2mb per image. These images may contain multiple frames or panels.

      5. Your story must be a complete narrative with character, plot and conclusion. No story set-ups, or plotless mood-set pieces.

      6. You must create a new photostory specficially for this contest. Do not reuse/edit creations already posted/published anywhere, even on DOA. Additionally, do not post/publish your entry anywhere until after the Anniversary event is over.
      Prizes

Prize winners will be able to choose their prize in this order:

      1. 1st place overall
      2. 2nd place overall
      3. Best theme development
      4. Best technical skills
      The prizes are:

      Villitunes Cyclops Mizuki

The identity of this mysterious prize will only be revealed to prize winners. If you win a prize, we will tell you the identity of the doll before you make your prize selection.

      How to Enter

Click the link below to start a thread for your entry. Only you and Den of Angels staff will be able to view your entry. You may title it however you like.

      [This contest is closed.]

You won't need a pseudonym; your doll characters do not have to be anonymous. The important thing here is the power of the story they will tell. Move your readers: make them laugh, sigh, cry, gasp, thrill them with irony.

    2. Can our entry feature a Dollfie Dream as main character? Or is it only resin on-topic dolls that can be featured?

Also, are any off-topic dolls allowed as long as they are not the main focus? For example: a Smart Doll.

    3. Sure, a Dollfie Dream is on-topic, so it can be featured.

For an off-topic doll - you mean for a crowd or background character? Usual off-topic rules apply, yes.

    4. OH AWESOME! A comic book challenge!! :D

Good luck to all participants! :clover

      ----

I do have a question for the mods about Rule #3. Is there an actual character limit to the text on each panel? Or is this rule more trying to avoid a "wall of text"? As long as the narrative or speech bubbles don't distract from the photos, would our entry be acceptable?

Thanks in advance for your help and for hosting this contest! <3

    5. Hiya! No actual character limit. But no mostly text-narrated/presented story with an illustration tossed in, like in a regular book (if any novels include illustrations any more!). Comics/graphic novels do have some narration, but the narration and dialogue are part of the pictorial layout.

I think I'm taking the long way round to repeat what you said. You have the right idea!

    6. Thank you for your prompt confirmation! I really appreciate it! :daisy

    7. Oh boy... now here is a challenge I can get behind. I have a question about the plot points; can I incorporate two themes (i.e "luck loves me, but I have worked hard too" etc.) or must it strictly be limited to showcasing one theme? I'm just wanting to confirm how much creative liberty is allowed to develop the story. Also, can I use photo manipulation / digital art (made all by me) for backgrounds and/or on the doll itself to tell the story?

    8. I have two more questions :

      1. Besides adding text balloons, are we allowed to edit anything e.g. make it a black/white photo but make certain elements in colour? Think certain scenes in the movie Sin City.

      2. Can we use print screens of fake webpages in our photo stories? For example : a fake Ebay page as shown below.

    9. You have to choose one of the three themes as the primary focus. But like any story, you can have secondary factors or aspects.
The emphasis is on the story and theme. Your style in telling the story visually is flexible.

    10. If that's a stylistic choice in your story, go for it.

In this case, you might be expecting that we'd just say we'd require a disclaimer at the top that those aren't actual offsite webpages. But think about it - does lifting someone else's completely formatted page and inserting a couple of tweaks really show off YOUR creativity? Also, that wide page is a lot of your allowed photo "real estate". Are ALL the little bits of information spread across that image really essential to your story? For example, does the seller's name (and that shouldn't be a real vendor name, btw) or other sidebar information really contribute anything to your story? For any short story, whether text or graphic, the details have to be pared down to be relevant to the story and to carry the story along economically.

      Just some writerly lecturing--

    11. I have a few questions..
Does that mean we have 12 pages of a comic of 12 images in total to tell the story?
And are we allowed to Photoshop out images??

    12. @hobbywhelmed - Quick question, is this limited to have only one doll/character, or can we use two dolls?

    13. What size photos?

    14. 4. Your images must be in jpg format with a maximum longest side of 800 pixels and a maximum file size of 2mb per image.
      :)

    15. Thanks.

    16. Does it have to be one specific theme of the three or can it touch on more than one? Does it necessarily need to fit into the mold of one specific one, I guess is my question. :)

    17. You can use however many dolls you need to tell your story (and own!)

    18. You have 12 images in total, each a max length (or width) of 800 pixels. Configure them how you need to tell the story. Just list whatever programs you used for tweaking, adjusting, wreaking havoc or magic on your photos.

    19. You must choose one theme as your official - or primary - theme. But if you can see your way to adding layers, nuances, twists (or if your mind won't let you avoid doing so--), give it a shot!

    20. Wait, I guess I am confused on this as well. XD So we need to have 12 pages/images that contain as many photos as we need to tell the story OR 12 images total meaning... 12 pictures only?

My understanding was the 12 pages that contain as many photos as we need to tell the story.

Any clarification would help at all. :) Thank you!

    21. expanding on mixofdays' last question. assuming that the 12 image limit means pages of the comic, is there a minimum requirement? if we can tell a story in just a couple pages, is that acceptable, or are we required to have at least a certain number of pages?
also, do dolls have to be featured in every photo, or are shots to show scenery/etc without the doll in them considered acceptable?

    22. I read it as "you can use a maximum of 12 photos" to tell your story.

      • x 1
    23. I hope it is pages and not pictures in total xD

      • x 1
    24. Thanks for that! :)

    25. I also read it as '12 images total', not 12 pages

    26. The easy part for me is done-- Drafting the story board. XD NOW if the dolls will listen... Lol

    27. I'm not a mod but when I read "12 images" in this context, I read it as 12 pages, not a limitation of 12 photos... especially since the rules state this:

To me, "montaged visual frames" = "not limited to one picture per image".

    28. Well, if I can squeeze more in, it would be a great help. xD So I can't wait for them to answer again. Lmao.

    29. The "12 images" means 12 images, and those 12 images can separately contain however many photos you can cram into that image, still having it look like a comic and progressing the story.

Compare it to a comic books pages, where you have one page but several panels on that one page :thumbup Does that make things clearer or did I make it worse? :XD:

      • x 1
    30. I think that makes it much clearer:

      12 images to upload
those images can contain as many pictures INTO them as they want.

      Thank you!

    31. Perfect explanation! :thumbup

    32. Thank you! I think somehow I was overthinking it and making it worse than it was x'D
I took first part of my pictures today, then the light ran out so I have to wait to do the rest x'D

    33. And with that, I totally readjusted my photostory. xDD
At least its planned. x.x; I have so much going on, what am I thinking, doing this on top of everyhting else?! Lol I just can't wait to read everyones because I love photostories so much

    34. The deadline is Friday 25th of August, right? ' Cause it says Saturday 25th but Saturday is the 26th.

    35. I would plan for Friday then to be safe..

I entered my story and I am SO proud! :D

    36. I just felt a little panic now! xD I gotta get a move on! Balancing this with triathalon is not helpful xD Sorry, Pokemon. No playing this week.

    37. @Fate
      @Marha
      @Eiko82

You folks are absolutely right about the date error. I've adjusted it in the first post to Saturday August 26th. I couldn't be a grinch and take a Saturday's free time away from anyone!

    38. Hmm... I might actually jump in on this too! Just for funsies~ A quick question before I get started; do we need to actually use the exact line mentioned in the rules ("Luck loves me," "Can't fight it," etc.) or do we just need to pull inspiration from that? Kind of a dumb question, but I figured I'd be sure. :XD:

    39. Oh thank you @hobbywhelmed xD That's a little less stressful. I work Saturday, but figured I'd be bringing my laptop in for finishing touches. Haha.

    40. This contest...I wanted to enter, then decided I don't have photography or photoshop skills and backed out. Then my husband encouraged me, saying it can't hurt to try and would challenge me to learn so I decided to try again. Then I got discouraged due to time restraints and quit. Then I finished my Triathlon entry and decided I do have time. Then I couldn't find a very important prop for my idea and gave up. Found a substitute, motivation renewed! I have all day today to focus on it...and...it's going to storm, which kills any hope of my photos actually looking decent. It's going to take some real :cloverLUCK:clover for me to actually complete this thing!:doh (But my will is pretty strong right now, so here's hoping. XD)

    41. Oh no x'D I hope you will have some luck with you! *sending good vibes!*

    42. Thanks! I'm going to make an attempt, at least. Something is better than nothing.

      • x 1
    43. Nope, you don't have to go verbatim dialogue in the story!

@CloakedSchemer - Go, go, go, you can do it!

      • x 1
    44. I hope I am able to do this....

    45. Almost done with mine. I'm really excited to see everyone else's!

    46. I've gotten three pages of my comic done! Hopefully I can get the rest done today! (Then focus on my Triathlon challenge, heh...)

    47. I just submitted my entry... NGL I've never been so nervous about joining a contest.
My heart is pounding through my chest. <3

Good luck to all participants! I look forward to seeing your entries! :daisy

    48. I did manage to finish and submit mine. I felt least competent in this contest, but I was determined to at least attempt it! So I'm proud of that. :)

I'm curious to see what everyone else does!

    49. I'm glad I'm not the only one who's getting their entry in kind of last minute... :sweat I've got five pages done now, and I really hope to be done today. Not bad I think, considering I just decided to enter yesterday!

    50. Question: Do you delete our entries when they have been accepted like in the triathlon or do you delete them after the deadline?

    51. I got mine submitted! It's been a long time since I've done a photostory, but a friend of mine challenged me to do it, so here we go! I'm super nervous, but I can't wait to see everyone else's entries. :) The big reveal is always the best part <3

    52. How elaborate does the plot need to be? Can it just be a short scene? I misunderstood the rules and interpreted it as 12 panels instead of 12 pages. I don't think I'll have time to remake my comic. :o

    53. If our photostory isn't acceptable for some reason, will we be informed before the due date? I'm also kind of worried about how in depth our plot needs to be. I mean, we can't make a visual novel with 12 images, but now I'm a little worried that mine isn't in depth enough... I think it fits the challenge though!

    54. I didn't ask about this, but if it helps, mine isn't really in depth, just sort of a "this happened one day" type thing. :)

    55. Okay, mine too! I think that's probably good enough; 12 images isn't a huge amount after all!

    56. Yeah, and considering they said no plotless mood setting or backstory, I assume that means to keep it simple and easy to follow.

    57. 12 images can have many more images within them --

Think of a "graphic short story" rather than a graphic novel?

    58. A quick question; when will our entries start to be accepted? I assume we'd hear if something was wrong with them, so will they disappear (be accepted) once the entry period is officially over, or before that? Just curious! :3nodding:

    59. Haven't seen any problems earlier in the week, but I'll be looking at the most recent entries tonight. If there's a fixable problem, I'll let the person know.

After midnight into Sunday morning, the entries will get merged into a long thread; your entry # will be your post #, and people will be able to vote.

    60. Ohhh no. I didn't realise there was a date error and so I thought I'd run out of time when I could have finished this one. :( I actually feel like a complete failure this year. Normally I enter every single competition. I know it's only trivial and not required...but I'm annoyed with myself more than anything.
