Equipment Phone Attachments

May 19, 2020

    1. In contrast to when I started the hobby and "apologies for potato photos, using my phone" was an understandably common apology, I've run into a new issue. My current phone's 12MP camera is the same/better than my old DSLR's body. Some days, I just don't want to fight with my DSLR and my SD, so it's not uncommon I just take my phone outside for a bit, but I do miss having a little bit of boost from a good lens, and currently I'm just not up to replacing my DSLR body, so I'm doing some digging around to see if there's anything else I want to goof around with for a bit.

I'm wondering if anyone has tried out any various phone lenses and attachments!

Besides some things like a rubber band with a small magnifier attached that I've seen, I've run into a few other brands.
Moment has a number of phone-case based lenses that tend to be on the pricey side of what I've seen.
CoPedvic offers a kit with a couple of lenses that appear to have a clip over option.
Xenvo also offers some clip on options and accessories.

I'd love to know if anyone has tried any of these or things like them for doll photos. I'm 100% certain they're not nearly as good as upgrading the DSLR, but hey, I like tinkering around with things and am just curious on this particular type of equipment right now.
I'm also wondering if all the magnifiers that are claiming to be macro lenses are just going to be too much for most doll use.
I'm well aware of YouTube reviews and the like, I'm also well aware of some of the issues with paid reviews and am very wary of how many of such reviews I don't think are reviewing objectively, so I'd like to just hear what folks think if they've tried any. Thanks in advance!

    2. I've never tried a clip on lens for my phone but it could be useful. Phones have wide angle lens which aren't ideal for close ups. You get that fish eye effect. And you can't fix it by cropping. A clip on lens that could reduce the field of view would allow for more natural looking photos. It would be a mild tele-converter you'd want, strong enough to get you to the equivilent of about a 50-80mm lens. From the Moment range of lens, I'd go with the 58mm. You don't want a macro lens unless need to take extreme closeups of small objects, like just BJD eye for example.
