I want to sew a few Gothic Lolita-like dresses for my future AR Ami, but for this I also need to sew one or more petticoats. I have already found a tutorial, but it's for human-sized petticoats... So I have one question regarding the material: Should I buy simple tulle or special petticoat fabric, which is a lot more expensive, but also has a different, stiffer structure? As the petticoat will be quite small, I think I dont need a very stiff fabric, but that may be wrong. ^^;
Usually you can find tulle and netting at places like Walmart for very cheap. What i've done before for human sized petticoats for a short skirt is to just take about 4-8 layers of tulle waist-to-knee wide and waistx3 long or longer, run a basting stitch around the top, gather it, and then sew it into a waistband. (I just put a snap on each end of the waistband, let them overlap a little bit, worked fine) So for working in doll sizes, that might be easier. I used net for a very stuff fluffy petticoat, and tulle for a softer one. They're both inexpencive where I've seen 'em.
I would definitely go with the tulle - just remember that some find tulle a bit itchy and your doll might not like it! If you find that to be a problem, I've discovered that a layer of soft cotton broadcloth (again found quite inexpensive) makes a very nice base for the petticoat. It matches the tulle in color and protects the legs from getting scratched. Yes, I've dealt with this before...only in human sizes... ops:
usually with petticoats ive only used muslin...very inexpensive...its close to broadcloth...99cents a yard along with the tulle. Only because when i have made them for people that was a suggested fabric on the pattern package
i just made a tulle petticoat for my doll and i found that tulle was pleanty stiff enough. The skirt practically stands out straight! Because of the scale of the doll i'd say that tulle is stiff enough, if the skirt isn't full enough you can just add more layers. ~Erin
if tulle isn't stiff enough for you, you can also easily find netting which would be PLENTY stuff... and it's cheap, you can get tulle and net at walmart, joann's, any fabric place.
Thank you all very much! I chose simple white tulle now which I will combine with a very thin white viscose fabric. ^^
