Esthetics Perfume on Your BJDs?

Feb 13, 2011

    1. I haven't seen a thread about perfume (reactions, people who spray it on their own dolls, etc.) on BJDs yet. I have quite a few questions on perfume:

      1. Do they remove face ups/body blushing?

      2. Are they bad for the resin?

      3. Do you spray your dolls with perfume?

      4. Chemical reactions between resin and perfume

I personally like to spray my doll's wig and clothes with perfume, just a small mist of it. I sometimes even spray my doll with a light mist of it to get rid of the resin smell and make her smell better. Does anyone else do this or is it just me?

    2. I'm not too sure about the science of it all, but I know that perfume contains oils which I don't think would be very good for the dolls. Don't quote me on that, though.

Personally, I have no problems with the 'resin smell'. In fact, I can barely smell it, even with a brand-new doll. I don't spray perfume on my dolls, because their smell doesn't bug me.

I know some companies offer spraying dolls with scents as an optional service, though, so it can't be all that bad for them.

    3. Many human perfumes contain oils - it makes the scent longer lasting and has more affinity to cling to the human skin. And I'm sure we all know that oil is one of the worst things that can happen to resin!

There are water based perfumes though - I don't know how they affect resin...but often they contain alcohol, which IS known as a faceup-remover.

      1. Do they remove face ups/body blushing?

I don't know if oils abrade the sealant, but the alcohol based perfumes are sure to damage it on some level, since they contain alcohol.

      2. Are they bad for the resin?

Oil based perfumes are bad - VERY BAD for the resin. They eat into it and stain it.

      3. Do you spray your dolls with perfume?

No. I really care about my dolls' resin and want to keep them in a good shape as long as I can. I have thought about givig them scent (my idea has been those little wooden balls that can be scented, wrapped in a little bag and put in their heads...but I'm hesitant even about that, because who knows what manages to seep through the bag. If scent comes out, particles come out, and I'm not sure I want to take the risk)

      4. Chemical reactions between resin and perfume

As I said, it can happen. You can look up the Faceup and Esthetics subforum on more info on what you can and can't use on resin. If you search carefully, you might find some parfumes that contain no harmful ingredients, but they will be hard to find...you might want to ask Angell Studio what sperfume (or other material) they use, since to my knowledge, they are the only company that offer scented dolls ;)

    4. I absolutely wouldn't, but I wouldn't spray perfume on me, either-- allergic to most of 'em. *shrug*

I'm sure some exist that wouldn't be bad for dolls, but I never researched it.

      =^__^=

    5. I would be concerned about spraying chemical type stuff on them unless I knew specifically what was in it -- any oils can damage your doll. It's not worth the risk.

I would never do it anyway, because I'm allergic to perfume -- even relatively small amounts of it make my sinuses burn and give me a godawful headache. Getting stuck near people who wear it to class (or in the elevators *whimper*) is misery for me.

    6. I've sprayed my doll's wigs with one spritz, just to make them smell better. Not crazy about wig smell. The perfume will cling for a while.

I wouldn't do it on her face, or the resin. It seems too risky; there's alcohol in post perfumes, so it might eventually strip coloring.

I should point out (with me) I will keep her super long wig on, because there's a minor chance of the spray going elsewhere - but I spray her super short one when it's not on her.

    7. If the resin smell bothers you, you can wrap the doll in a bit of white sheeting (just to protect it from dirt and light) and leave it out to let it air out for a week or so. I agree with the posters above that perfume on a doll is not a good idea--not only because of the oils, but also because perfume itself gets "stale" as the organic ingredients break down (you should not keep perfume for more than a year, especially if you have hot summers), so the perfume will smell icky after a while.

(I love the resin smell myself, it says "new doll!" to me) :)

    8. An alternative might be to make a little sachet of white fabric and put something like dry lavender inside and let it sit in your dolls torso for a while. I cannot really think of any harm it could do.

    9. Perhaps a little spritz on the outer most layer of clothing would be ok? I've never personally never done it. I like the "New Dolly" smell myself. I've heard of companies/people putting the dry potpourri or little cloth sachets in their dolls' heads before, maybe that would be better way to go.

    10. A spritz on a cotton ball left in the headcap or torso (When dry of course) never harmed any of the dolls I've done it to. It's been some time since I've done this, and it's since been removed, but my doll has not had any damage or lasting, lingering scent.

I'd never, ever spray a doll directly, least of all on the face, just to avoid any potential damage, and I would never use the craft grade scented oils for soaps or candles, but plain old people perfume is perfectly safe on a cotton ball ONCE DRY. Give it a good few hours to dry out before placing it in your doll so that the alcohol based liquid doesn't get on the resin. :daisy

    11. I don't spray perfume on my dolls, their wigs or their clothes for many of the reasons listed. Oil and alcohol can both damage face-ups and resin and I have never encountered a perfume which had neither of those in it, I'm not sure one can exist and still be called a perfume. Also, many people have allergic reactions to different types of perfumes and for that reason I will never spray any of my doll items with them. I never know when I may want to sell an item I no longer like, re-shell a doll or do a wig swap with someone.

If you spray your doll items with perfume and you ever intend to sell those items later I think you should mention in the listing that they have been sprayed with perfume at some point (even if you wash them before selling them) to avoid potentially hurting or killing whoever buys it. Some allergic reactions to perfume can be very dangerous and even deadly. My grandfather's throat would close up from the smell of most perfumes and he would have to be taken to the emergency room to avoid suffocation.

    12. i wouldn't really put perfume on my dolls (and i love the resin smell :o)

but i do put perfume oils in the wigs because aside from smelling nice wigs actually behave better :D

    13. I haven't sprayed my dolls or their things, but if you keep them where you do put on your perfume they'll probably aquire the scent. If dolls can get second hand smokey they should be able to get second hand yummy. Or if you hug and handle them while you smell like yum then it should rub off. But if you want to spray them or do whatever then do it. You can't seriously fret about what the random person next to you may or may not have all the time; just don't dump the bottle all over the doll! (I don't think you would)

    14. I sprayed perfume in the air and waved Anemone's wig through it.

If you don't want to directly spray anything that goes on the doll, keep something like scented candles or potpourri with your doll or where you store its clothes when not in use.

    15. I'm another one with allergies, so I'd never have perfume in the house. And I love new resin smell :sweat.

But if you can leave your doll undressed and unboxed for a couple of days in a safe place, that will help them air out quite a bit.

And if you do use it some sort of scent, I second the need to mention that in sales ads later on if you decide to sell. Perfume allergies range from day-ruining to deadly.

    16. I had a thought about this the other day. My solution was to make a perfume locket. It's like a normal locket but it has "ventilation" holes in the front of it. You spray the perfume you like or drop scented oil onto a piece of cloth and place it into the locket, that way nothing harmful will ever touch your doll but your doll can still have a pleasant smell. I've yet to find a way to make a dolly size one but I'm working on it ;) I keep searching Etsy to see if someone there makes/ can make me a tiny one.

    17. I guess that keeping your doll in a perfumed ambient should do the trick without any harm to the resin/wigs/accessories. As someone already said, if they can pick up smoke smell they also can pick up the good scents. I guess it's somewhat like our houses/bedrooms. ;)

    18. angell studio frangranced my Cain when i bought him. The resin on his shoulder ball joints (where he was sprayed) went quite a vivid yellow over time

    19. I'm to lazy to read the whole page, but I put little bags with Lavender in my dolls torso so she smells better, I think any kind of potpourri would work. I haven't had any damage becous of it.

    20. i sometimes put a little drop of scented oi on theyre wig. as long as it's a tiny drop and you check on dangerous chemicals you should be OK. the wig is a good spot of your dolly to do this with (especially tibetan lambs wool wigs)

    21. I would never ever ever spray perfume directly on my dolls. O.o Both alcohol and oil are very bad for resin so when I want to scent my dolls, I put it on their wigs. I collect BPAL perfume and my dolls share it with me, so they get little dabs off of the caps on the parts and the crowns of their wigs. It doesn't get on their heads or bodies but they still smell good.

    22. I was actually dabbling with the idea of a doll-safe perfume/cologne. I've been experimenting with my own organic version for myself (about 3-5% essential oils, 97-95% olive oil). What is it exactly about oil that damages a doll? I've been trying to find anything on the forum for evidence of damage due to olive/essential oils, but no dice so far. Any information would be so helpful.

    23. I personally wouldn't EVER spray any colognes, perfumes, body sprays etc on a doll directly but if I was the type to want my doll to smell all fancy I'd probably grab an outfit and LIGHTLY dab or spray some onto an item of clothing where the spray wont be absorbed and touch the resin. Like the hood of a sweater for instance, would probably be safe >.<

    24. I wouldn't spray any perfume on my dolls.. cause I think it's quite dangerous for the resin itself..
as many before said, a lot of them are made in part from oil.. so Oils "destroy" resin.. I wouldn't risk at all XD
anyway, only a new doll smell a lot of resin for the first days.. but after few time the smell fades..
however.. for making a doll have a good smell, you can just limitate yourself to wash her dresses with a good and scented soap..
and also her wigs, just wash it and style it (I also use a little bit of hairspray in some of them) and she will smell clean for some days :)

    25. Ah thank you all, I'm refraining from spraying my doll directly with perfume right now. I don't like taking any chances. If anyone has other "organic" forms of perfume and have tried them before, feel free to post the outcomes here. And also thank you everyone for the tips on making her smell good. ^^

    26. As to answer your questions, yes, perfume can remove the sealer, because it usually contains alcohol and it is potentially harmful to the resin as there are other harmful ingredients in it, too.

However, there is a little trick how you can perfume your doll. You need to do it indirectly though. I've discovered this little trick by accident a couple of years ago:

Every good series of perfume nowadays comes with a bigger variety of products. Eau de perfume, Eau de toilette, shower gel, body cream, body powder -- just to name a few options.

Get the shower gel or the shampoo. Wash your dolls clothes with it. Rinse it carefully, so that there is no residue of the soap and then leave it to dry. Once they are throughoutly dry put the clothes back on your doll. The first effect will be that your doll will now instantly smell of your favorite perfume. But the best part is the second effect, if you leave your doll in these clothes for a couple of days, the resin will take the smell of the perfume and it will last for a couple of weeks.

Another thing I discovered with this method is the following. A brand new doll (one that still has a smelly resin) will carry the smell of the perfume slightly longer as a doll that doesn't smell anymore. It's almost like if those evaporating gases carry the smell of the perfume with them.

    27. my girl has perfume on her shirt. i sprayed it in my hand and rubbed it into the shirt. i didn't wanna risk it doing something to her body so i didn't put it directly on her.

    28. Basically, oil can eat through and 'melt' resin (picture a half-melted rubber band from sun exposure for a good mental image) if left in constant contact with it. There was an experiment I saw done once on a resin anime-figure by Happy Smile where the owner of the figure left it in a bowl of oil for a couple weeks and it got eaten through and melted in the areas where the resin was thinnest. I think you'd have better luck finding more information by searching the web rather than just DoA, we are far from the only hobby who enjoys toys made of resin! ;) I have been tempted to buy a few option hands of different companies to see how it could eat through different resin mixtures.

    29. I actually did do a search, but nothing came up strangely.

Sharkyra, that's a great method, I'll try that out sometime, I do have a particular bottle of shampoo that I love the smell of. ^^ Thank you.

    30. I remember seeing a bjd company offering a service to scent dolls by having the aroma of incense do the trick. Maybe you could try this instead of using a harsh oil or alchohol perfume that would do damage? Just a thought! I may even try it myself because I love incense and candles and own dozens. :)

    31. Whiskery the method works very well, just make sure you're using a strong scented shampoo :)

    32. A tiny cloth bag full of either potpurri or a cotton ball sprayed with perfume and then tucked in the head or torso should be safe, the cloth would keep the oils or alcohol away from the doll and prevent it from being permanently scented should you ever sell it. Same thing with a folded up dryer sheet. Though if you're just doing it to get rid of the resin smell, you could try de-smelling it instead of adding more scent. This sounds crazy but I know it works from experience, its a trick learned from collecting old vinyl toys. Most cat litter brands have an odor neutralizer in it nowadays, so try pouring a bit in either the dolls box (lined with a cloth or plastic bag so it doesn't make a mess of it), or soem other container your doll will fit into. Wrap the doll in a bit of thin cloth, just enough to keep it clean, and nestle it in the litter, maybe even sprinkle some on top. seal the container and let it sit for a few days, then dump out the litter, unwrap your doll, and it should be odor free! Cat litter should work on everything from resin smell to cigarette smoke odor.

    33. i spray perfume on my doll's clothes during meet up and stuff nothing seems to have happened, but i would never ever dare to even try spraying it directly....

    34. I don't use perfume on my dolls, but I do use those scented bags with the little balls inside, the kind you keep in a drawer, or a closet. I put one in each my dolls' clothes boxes and they all have sweet scents now through their clothes. Much safer than putting something directly on the doll, and the satchets haven't caused any damage to anything. ^_^

    35. I never thought to apply any kind of scent to my dolls...I don't notice any resin scent with my dolls, though (my alergies are bad enough all the time that I don't smell much of anything). But anyway, if I was going to try it, I certainly don't think I'd spray them directly with anything. It seems like at the very least they might end up permanently smelling of perfume, which may not really be desirable, especially if your doll eventually ends up being around other people who might be alergic, at a meetup or something ^_^;; It seems like just spraying it on their clothes (before dressing them) probably wouldn't hurt, though.

    36. I don't spray anything directly ON my dolls themselves, I wash their clothes in really nice fragrant soaps and ocassionally Spritz their wigs with a little something, let it dry and then plop it back on them... the only thing that probably wafts onto them is The Occasional Febreezing of a Room( usually a good 4 feet from them ), and as long as it's never direct I haven't noticed anything but them smelling lightly-refreshed hahah~
I would refrain from direct resin contact though :<!

    37. I would never dream of deliberately scenting my dolls or any of their things. It might not strike people as bad to scent their wigs or clothes, but consider - what happens when you sell them? Are you sure they will be washable, that the scent will come out, in case the buyer has an allergy? Just like notifying in threads that you smoke or have pets, if you use perfume on your doll items it's a good idea to note it when selling them later.

    38. Absolutly not. Chemical on resin is not good.
I would never buy a second hand doll sprayed with parfume.
I have diagnosis MultipleChemicalSensivity and have get inconsious and hard to breathe, if I been near parfumed people. I never go out without my friends becauce they have saved my life many times, from parfume, hairspray, softener and cigarettesmoke.

    39. Maybe a bit on the outfit but I barely have a sense of smell as is.
