Just something to add; of course my doll's clothes are more expensive than my own but it's also because I often shop during sales! Recently I managed to purchase a shirt that would have cost me $80 for $30, had I bought it in its original price it might actually have been the most expensive shirt in my entire wardrobe! Even when there are sales in the doll world they're hardly ever as drastic as some real world sales that can go as low as 50 and 70% off!
I also always feel sorry for money for clothes for myself, but my daughter is not. I buy her clothes and shoes and a lot more often and more expensive than itself.
It's out of question that I spend more for my dolls than myself, first i spend for me and my family and if I've something left it will be for the dolls because for sure doll clothes are expensive, so I shop on the secondary market or during sales too .
I love clothes, I love looking good. Nothing has changed since getting into the hobby. I make clothes for my dolls (and sometimes for myself) and though I'm not brilliant at sewing I am improving so the complexity of the dolls clothes is improving too. Personally I don't want to be a badly dressed doll owner, I love make-up, shoes, bags, clothes and I would feel awkward if my doll were dressed better than myself.
This is so true. I only buy clothes at thrift shops because I couldn't fathom spending over 20 dollars on an article of clothing. I guess those morals do not apply to my dolls XD
I've noticed that too !! I bought a LE MSD Set for the Bunny Eared Coat and she basically has a $50 coat.. while I just bought my self a $10.88 hoodie !! The same goes for Handbags.. I use to buy nice handbags and I went cold turkey on them..
I noticed how expensive the clothes can get, but for me it's harder to make tiny clothes than human sized ones, so I will pay if I have to. I'm just learning to sew doll clothes now, and I find it hard because of the tiny size. I've been sewing my own clothes for 30 years!
Meh! I do not mind spending a bit more on doll clothes than my own. Doll clothing NEVER wears out and they will not have to worry about it not fitting due to weight loss or gain.
I totally spend more on dolly clothing & shoes then on my own. Here's how i see things. Doll clothing can be resold for a good price, mine cannot once it's worn. Doll clothing can last forever, mine won't as i wash my clothing alot (kinda OCD about dirty). So why would i spend so much one my own clothing if they aren't going to last. Also don't forget about outgrowing human clothing (as in getting fat ) I always shop for sale clothing and shoes for myself.
I've never really been into fashion (well, wearing it, reading about how its changed is another thing all together), so never really bothered about spending under £10 on a tshirt and under £20 for a pair of jeans that I'll then wear until they're thread bare and ripped. As for doll clothing, I did drop £43 on three Lati Yellow dresses and one MSD t-shirt not too long ago, and £18 on a top, skirt and leggings. I do try to make my on clothing for my dolls though.
I pretty much shop exclusively secondhand. It's cheaper, and I tend to find cooler stuff, honestly. I usually buy my shoes new, though... And sometimes my mom and I might be at the mall for whatever reason (ugh, MALL) and see something nice enough (and not overpriced!) to get. I mean, I think $10 for a shirt is crazy, since I usually get them for $2-$6. But then DOLLS... I'm like 'OH MY GOD MY DOLL NEEDS THAT SHIRT\PANTS\JACKET\ETC' and then look at the price and be like 'CRAP' and then usually I get it anyway... I am pretty picky about what I get for them though. It has to be good quality, I have to like it, and I have to take into account whether or not the doll's character would wear it, regardless of how good I think it would look on them, or how cool it is. Like Raouken corsets, LOVE. But I'll never have any because none of my dolls wear corsets. Ah well.
Yeah, I spend way more money on my dolls clothes and accessories than myself... Maybe... Actually no. I think i buy myself clothes and stuff more often... But when i do find dolly stuff i like, it tends to be more expensive. Soooo I think it equals out in the long run.
I was thinking about this the other day when I started putting doll clothes in a cart and the amount equalled almost $200 and there was less in there than what I could get for myself at the same price. I was a bit irritated with that fact when I realized that we have become so accustomed to paying through the nose for these guys that it has become normal. I understand having to pay for the material and man power to make them but the markup is a bit rediculous. That being said I'll still end up paying the $200 for my dolls clothes because my sweing abilities is less than satisfactory.
Sighhh I greatly agree... Whenever I see a super cute outfit (and the price) I quickly realize that I could be wearing the same outfit for the same price... Hehe I can't resist though and can't stop thinking about how great my girl would look in it...
I really want to know where you are buying all these inexpensive clothes. Jumpers can cost £20-30 in a regular high street store here, but then again people are a lot less casual with the way they dress than in the US. I honestly don't think doll clothing is really expensive in comparison to human clothes.
i recently dropped $50 for a pair of boots for my girl and i would never pay that much for my own. i will be willing to spend up to $100 for a single outfit for my dolls no problem, but for myself i would never dream of it. i usually shop at walmart or kohl's who have crazy sales all the time.
I've never been into designer clothes or bags and I'll often wear hand-me-downs. Me wearing good clothes is such a waste. T-shirt, pants and, jacket. If the work environment demands more, screw them. If someone feels the urge to dress me up with their money, they're welcome to. Just don't expect me to spend a fortune. On the other hand, I'll willingly spend said fortune on clothes for my guys. Hell...since I discovered them, I've weeded myself out of all my other hobbies. Now all my money goes into them.
I used to be SO good about buying the cheapest clothes/props for my dolls until I decided that affected how much I loved them. I couldn't accomplish their 'look' and they never reached my potential Lately I've been finding myself buying more expensive clothes, and buying some second hand to be like ooh look I saved $5!
xD story of my life... I would never spend 100+ USD for a clothing for myself. and thats considered quite cheap for genuine volks outfit! >.< Something is wrong here.. XD
I've spent stupid amounts of money for my girls' clothes in the last two months alone. And yet, in the last half of the year, I've bought myself two shirts and a skirt, totaling $40, and only because some idiot threw oil paint at what I was wearing at time (I was on my way to work). Gah.
*Raises hand with a sigh* Guilty... was at the BJD shop a few weeks back (And I never leave without buying something) and bought a sweater for Sofia that was around 30$. The worst part is, the sweater is so cool, I want it myself but I can't find something that looks like it! Still searching for a matching one..
I've noticed that too. Full sets are ridiculously expensive--and most things, even simple items like a tank top--are almost as much as a tank top for myself at Walmart! In some ways I find it almost silly--and yet I still buy them... XD I think one of my biggest DOH moment came when I was looking at shoes because I was going to have to get a new pair and muttering over the price. That night I was looking at some nice doll boots that I wanted. It hit me that I'd totally be willing to dish for the doll boots but here I was grumbling over getting a pair for myself! (Thankfully I can laugh at myself for that... and it helped me get my own pair of new shoes. I think my new policy became 'if I'd pay for it for my doll, I should be willing to get it for myself!') On a related note, I've found I like second hand clothes--for myself and my dolls! Yay deals!
I totally spend more on their clothes than my own, but thats because I'm not terribly fashion conscious when it comes to myself...enough to be comfortable is how I usually dress, but my girls let me have a bit more fun with styles, and of course that tends to cost more than my utilitarian viewpoint I use on myself ^^;
Guilty-- but then, I'm really cheap when it comes to buying clothes for myself. I think it's partly reactionary to the way prices are jacked up for plus size ladies most of the time. First that women's clothes always cost more than they need to, or seem pricier than men's a lot of the time, and second that I always have to pay a lot more than I should for clothes that aren't even properly changed to fit me... Today I debated thirteen dollars for a skirt for myself and figured seven bucks was about right for a shirt, and yet I fully plan on ordering clothes with my next doll that cost more than I'd spend on myself without a darn good reason.
Yes I notice that. Well, my body not as perfect as my doll. I really like to look at them with nice outfit more than look at myself.
Ugh, I hate this problem in the hobby. I never spend more than $30 on a single clothing item for myself (except shoes/nice-nice dresses) and even then that's rare. I wouldn't pay $100+ for a complete outfit for me; I REFUSE to pay that for my doll! It kills me that Dean's jeans were $40, but I more or less had to get them because my skills aren't where they need to be for me to do a decent job making them myself. Sam and Andi will be the same way, and I'm not looking forward to it. My solution is typically to buy inexpensive items (shirts, etc) and cut them up for patterns. I splurged on a jacket once too and did the same thing to it. I've been able to make tons of jackets myself for a fraction of the cost since then, and even been able to modify the pattern to get more complicated jacket designs that would cost me even more if I bought them pre-made.
Same here. Unless it's shoes or wigs which I can't make on my own, if any of the clothing items go above the $30 mark, then I don't buy it. If there's a $100 dress or outfit out there that I like, I'll try to sew a variation myself for much less. Most of the time, it's the labor and shipping that makes it so expensive, I think. I only buy two or three sets of good quality clothing a year for myself (spring/summer, fall/winter) and make them separate interchangeable pieces so it looks like different clothes most of the time, so I can justify spending clothes on my doll as part of the hobby, but anything over $30 is too much for me.
Heck no! Don't get me wrong...I'm a T.J.Maxx LOVER...but in no way do I spend more for my dolls clothing than my own. I own boys so that helps. But I'm a guy too so I guess that should balance... For example my last pair of boots...cost more than I ever paid for any other pair of shoes and dam near as much as a doll. But they are hand made cobbled boots. I'm that type that would rather have fewer nice things and only buy a few times a year than a bunch of stuff that I have to replace 10 times a year.
I tend to be more flexible when buying things for my dolls- but I do have a price limit when something gets expensive. As for myself, sometimes it's hard to spend just as much since its kind of hard to find clothing that suits me... xP I'm just horrid at styles and what nots when it comes to myself since sometimes I'm not confident enough to wear certain things out (like lolita dresses). x:
I also spend more on doll clothes than clothing for myself. But I'm fat now. When I lost weight I'm going to buy myself a whole new collection
I'll go shopping and be like, 20 DOLLARS FOR A SHIRT? PFFFTTTT NO THANKS but then I'll go and spend 20 dollars on a tiny doll sized shirt.....oh man...
It takes more skill to make doll clothing. Fabric is basically the cheapest part of it, what you pay for is the skilled workers who sew it vs. the mass-produced clothing machines make for humans. Same thing with all doll stuff, especially very detailed mini furniture that can cost the same or even more than full-scale things
Yeah you would think doll clothes would be cheaper than real people clothes. It's like a hidden cost of owning the doll. I try to get one special outfit for each of my dolls, and cost kind of goes out the window once I find that one.
Originally I don't like shopping for clothing for myself and will do only when I need. After I start this hobby...I buy so many clothes for my doll and some are over 200 $ (O.O") It's almost as much as my dress. So I decided to sew or make what I can make for them more to save this money.
I´m quite picky with clothes. So I like to sew them by myself. As soon as I see sth which is pretty I think: Nah, you can make sth similar. So I only buy shoes hihi and I love them so much . I agree with Dollvari they are really expensive, another reason why I don´t buy any
I often find myself hesitating to buy a shirt for myself that is about 25 euro's or more, but if I find something for a doll that I really love, I am willing to spend that money and consider it kinda cheap xD; On the other hand, doll clothes stay good while stuff I get for myself wears down after some time, and I do think making doll clothes is a little more difficult than regular sized clothing.
I spend a lot on myself, I'm always into designer items. It is good to treat yourself as well as the doll! But for me it is more fun and more personal to design and sew doll clothes so I usually don't spend much on my doll. Just the costs of fabric and hardware off Etsy. The cost of doll shoes is okay for me because I cannot make a pair I'm happy with. I can see why tailors want a lot of money for their work, it can be stressful and time-consuming especially when running a business. I did invest in my doll but I like to invest in myself too.
Definitely not! Sometimes they do have expensive outfits like a tux for $200 or a kendo set for $500 but I like buying clothes for myself often and sometimes those clothes are kimono ranging from $200-$800. And that is for just the kimono which doesn't include things like the obi that could cost just as much or the komono necessary to wear the outfit. I also have this irritating obsession with purses...that doesn't work well with my hoarding Takeshi Murakami stuff. It was just unfortunate for me that he chose to collaborate with Louis Vuitton. I...I'm trying to slow down, I swear! I need to relearn to how to save. Or block myself from the internet.
I've also been shocked at the price of dolls clothes. But considering that it is much harder to work on such a small scale it makes sense. Especially for the elaborate and intricately detailed items. I've actually taken to going to thrift stores and buying stuff that I can repurpose as material for doll clothing. It's still cheaper than going to Joann's or something like that. I don't buy clothes for myself too often but I do like to shop at Ross where clothes are cheap so doll clothes would cost more. However I do splurge sometimes and get myself some Lolita stuff, in which case that ends up being more than doll clothes.
Most definitely more on doll clothes than on mine. I live in jeans and tees, and cheap ones at that; who can find cheap clothes for dolls? Not me!!
I'm so glad I'm not on my own here! I feel so guilty spending so much on my boys clothes when I am one of the only people who actually see my dolls, but I feel when I have spent so much on the dolls themselves they deserve lots of quality clothes! Why spend hundreds on beautiful dolls and dress them in rags? I love the way their clothes can tell stories about your dolls character
Well, dolls clothes are usually harder to make than people's. They are tiny and sometimes really complicated. So it's expected to be pricy sometimes. I make most of the clothes myself, but in past I used to buy clothes. A pricy hobby we have, yeah ^^;
No, just no. I am really hesitant about buying (really) expensive items. I tried that once or twice and my dolls actually never wear those items If I would come across the most fantastic amazing piece of clothing ever I would think about it, but otherwise no. I do buy things for them, don't get me wrong. But I guess my price limit is somewhere around $50 usd.
The more i get into this hobby the more i realize i need to learn to sew. It is very easy to spend more on just the dolls clothes (and for one outfit none the less!) than on my own. But the clothes are so pretty!
Yes, and no. I am more then willing to pay for a tailor fitted, custom made piece of doll clothing (and they can cost more then my own) But I am not willing to pay a lot of "factory made" doll clothing, that mostly is a hit or miss
Doll clothes don't often cost more than mine but they do cost more than my children's. I often make their clothes since they have such unusual bodies... But I do have caps on how much I will spend on clothes or shoes for my dollies.
My doll's clothes, I think, cost about as much as my clothes do. But his shoes? Definitely cost more than mine did
Depends on which clothes of mine we mean. I've been getting into the pinup style of clothing and that stuff is EXPENSIVE (about $100/dress). My everyday work clothes usually come from Old Navy so at least that stuff's cheap. Doll clothes I've been buying new from Alice's Collections, which usually has lower prices than other companies anyway. Some of the prices for fullset outfits from various companies have been eye-popping as I've been browsing this week, though!
For me it's more of a "if I had a perfect doll body, hell yeah I'd buy 200$ outfits for myself" type of thing...but since I have not, I can at least spoil my dolls who can wear anything I can't...
So here's how it goes down: Me: *stares at computer* Dat dress. My doll needs it. I need it because of reasons. I shall buy it. *sees the 200 dollar price tag* *stares down at my feet and my socks with holes in them* *clicks 'Buy'* Me: lol yolo
I don't spend more than absolute necessary on my clothes. Most of my fancy formal wear pieces are hand-me downs(nice to be small). I usually have to shell out more than I care to for work clothes, but it's the price you pay for that big business paycheck. Everything else, like undies and basics, I buy as cheap as possible online. As for doll clothes, I make most of them. Some pieces, like lacy stockings, I buy online. I buy a lot of accessories and notions and materials, too, which adds up.... Still, because of my work wardrobe, I'm currently spending more on my clothes than doll clothes. However, if doll clothes suddenly became tax deductible....
I really would like to blow all the money I have on clothing my doll but the prices on some pieces are staggering. ;___; But yes, I do spend more money on my dolls than myself like the majority here(though investing in a sewing machine and learning how to sew is going to be really useful).
