Paying more for your Doll's clothing than your own....

Mar 30, 2007

    1. I still fit in my clothes from elementary school (and like them) so I don't need to buy myself clothes (the last time I did so I used a gift card and only bought a skirt, that was almost 3 years ago), and the clothes that I like are super expensive and not available where I live
of course I spend more on my doll's clothes, they're higher quality and take a lot more skill to make than mine

    2. I almost never buy new clothes. Other people occasionally give me clothes that they've grown out of or that they bought and didn't fit into, but it all generally comes from the thrift store or is kind of old and junky. By that reasoning, I -should- buy new clothes, but I never do.

My friend and I were discussing this, actually. We'd buy thrift store clothes for ourselves (I found a place with $2 shirts once!) but we'd actually consider and save up for much more expensive things for our dolls.

(I did just totally order myself a "FRANK BURNS EATS WORMS" shirt though. xD)

    3. The price of doll clothes did shock me at first, but once I bought some of the better made pieces, I really started to appreciate the detail, craftsmanship, and style. Appreciating my dolls' clothes has actually increased the amount I'm willing to spend on clothes for myself. Whereas, pre-doll ownership, I would never buy a piece of clothing over $60, now I occasionally splurge on a well made and versatile piece for myself, though still not as often as I splurge on clothes for my dolls. You could say that in styling my dolls, my own style has evolved, too.

    4. I won't bat an eye at paying more for doll cllothing and shoes for my dolls, I'm so bad that I won't spend very much on my own clothing because I need the money to buy my dolls things. they dress way nicer then I do, but I'm getting better about dressing nicer myself since I lost 100 pounds

    5. Human clothing is mass-produced, made by the hundreds or more usually, thousands, in factories, usually in places where costs are super-low (wages, rent, buying the machines, buying the materials). The more you can make and sell, the lower the price you can sell your item at, and the bigger profit you can make.

Doll clothes are made in small batches or are ooak. This alone ups the costs dramatically.

So, no, it is not a big surprise. The surprise is when the price of doll clothes is LESS than for a human. That is just too darn WEIRD! Someone is definitely losing money when they sell at such a low cost!!!

    6. Everyone I tell finds that crazy as well. Ill definitely be making my own clothing for my dolls, and using cheap alternatives. In my opinion I think that doll clothes cost so much even though they are made of such a tiny bit of fabric, is because their so small that their harder to make and usually have more detail than real clothes.

    7. Guilty! I've got two kids to dress as well so tend to pick up items for myself on the fly while shopping at Target, Costco, etc. I usually dress super casual and am chasing around a 2 yo so really no need to splurge on my own wardrobe, unless there is a special occasion of course but even then I try to be frugal and get a designer lablel second hand off of the 'bay.

I *don't* change my dolly's outfits frequently. If I find a gorgeous/well made item sometimes I can justify getting it as I know I will make good use of it =) In the end though, would rather put the funds for another doll.

    8. I don't spend money on doll clothes. Though, it's mostly because it is so tricky to find the right sizes and styles. I typically just buy fabric to sew clothes for my dolls, since it's easier for me to do that.

I raid thrift stores and ebay for fabrics, for the dolls or for myself. OuO Though, I would LOVE to splurge once to get a fancy outfit for my Nicky.

    9. Before I into BJDs world, I love fashion and will get a few trendy items every seasons. But now I stop buying clothes and shoes and bags or any other accessories for a pretty long time. I almost can't remember when is the last time I shop for myself. Now I definitely paying more on doll clothing then on me. It doesn't mean that I buy a lot of clothes. The fact is after I spent the money on the doll then I don't have much money left on their clothing. I would love to try sewing for my dolls but I just don't have the time and energy after 6 days long-hours job. I hope I can do it one day though!:)

    10. To be honest, it's not too difficult to hand sew for something smaller, if anything, it's even easier.
The actual problem is that doll clothing is not mass produced, and are actually hand-made for the most part.
Furthermore, doll clothing tends to be more elaborate than our regular clothing. It's almost a piece of art within itself.
However, I do protest against those 40 dollar jeans: my jeans were only $5 from walmart, lol. :shudder

    11. I definately spend more on individual items of doll clothing than my own, (ie I'll pay more for a doll shirt than a human shirt)...but this is almost entirely because I buy all of my clothes, with few exceptions, at vintage stores and thrift shops. Aside from the price, I like the character of old/worn clothing, mixing and matching styles and clothing 'eras' etc. If there was a 'BJD Goodwill' I would inevitably get all of my doll clothing there lol

    12. I most definitly stopped shopping for my own clothes after I got my BJD. It's simply more interesting. I'm a women so I've been buying women clothing for all my life but now I have shop for young boys it feels fresh to shop from new perspective. Plus, I get to buy interesting, creative costumes whereas my clothing should not stand out too much (unless it's halloween which is like once in 365 days). I think it's natural to be drawn to BJD's clothing than human's.

    13. It doesn't shock me because I collect in a range of scales - 1/3 scale stuff seems a bargain in comparison to some of the other dolls' outfits!

I don't spend more on doll clothes than on my own though... I love fashion and dressing up, and my dolls are mostly just an extension of that.

    14. i spend more money for my dolls' clothing. actually my last clothing purchase for myself was a half year ago lol XD and the clothes were way more cheaper compare to my dolls' clothes

    15. I don't spend much money on either. I have enough clothes for myself for a long time as I've stopped growing some time ago, and since I'm very much into crafty things my grandmother gave me a bunch of fabric scraps to make doll clothes out of, which I find more fun than buying. Now I'm working on my skills to make some proper clothes, but I'm thinking of buying my girl at least one nice looking outfit she can wear because there'll be a while before I can make her absolutely great clothes, and I want her to not look shabby.
I did buy her a nice pair of shoes though, as well as a bunch of shoes for my off topic but very loved dolls. I'd say all in all the six pairs of shoes cost about as much as one pair of human sized no-name sneakers cost in here, so even if I tried I'd probably spend more money on just renewing my walking shoes than on doll clothes.

    16. I bought a T shirt and a sweater for teddy bear from some cheap low end retail store. They both fit well on my doll (mini size) and they only cost me 2$ each. And they are not poor quality compare to other t shorts i bought for my doll. I mean T shirts are just T shirts... Yes there is more skills needed to make it small, but believe me the major reason why the BJD T shirts are selling for at least 15-30$ is that its a luxury market. A mini doll cost at least 250-400$, so the company knows we are goong to take our money out for our dolls and they put a higher mergin on everythings thats related to BJD

    17. Ehh...I've only bought a couple things for my new doll, and for the most part, they are cheaper than the clothes I buy for myself. Then again, I'm not buying anything really fancy or detailed, and my clothes aren't that expensive, considering where I buy them. It's not shocking though, because even in the Barbie hobby, clothes can get expensive, and the quality is barely half of what BJD clothing is comprised of. Plus, unlike Barbie and people clothes, most bjd apparel aren't mass produced and I think alot of them are made to order, so, the more I think about it, the more it makes sense why they're more expensive, especially for SD sized dolls. I think shoes are the only thing with crazy prices....like $90 boots??!?! What?!

    18. I'm trying to rebuild my own wardrobe thanks to some significant weight loss, so although I'm hoping to be able to get my first doll within the next couple months, clothes for me come before clothes for her. Luckily I have a lot of craft supplies and the skills needed to make my future doll some nice clothing for almost free.

    19. Oh yes, I do spend more per item- probably. They also don't stain, tear, sweat aka ruin their clothes either so that's a perk. ^^

    20. I typically make clothes for my dolls, but I've been wanting to buy my newest doll outfits and they are quite expensive. But I shop at thrift shops for my own clothes so that might be why they seem so expensive to me

    21. All the time my dad says " You could have got yourself a new pair of shoes for that price" or " Why would you buy a wig for your doll when you can buy a wig for yourself" . He does it to be annoying, but I don't really care. I can't sew that well, and plus it is always cute to get little shirts or shoes in the mail :)

    22. I think I spend roughly the same amount of money on doll clothes as I do on my own clothes. A full outfit for me would be about $80-$90 and I'll spend about the same amount on doll clothes. In order to save money, I think I'll just buy things that I can't make such as wigs, shoes, eyes, paint etc and make outfits myself.

    23. Thank goodness I sew - I must say I spend lots on my dolls but I spend lots on me too... I go to thrift shops & fabric stores to grab what I can LOL
& Kawaii_mon I definitely spend more on dollie shoes than on mine - cause I have more dolls basically. I've got lots of thrift shop shoes for me - & 3 pairs of very expensive boots/shoes that last forever (one pair of boots - really pricey even tho I got them on sale - is 16 years old). No dollie shoes at Goodwill :( although I do expect their shoes/boots WILL last longer than mine (unless they run about at night while I sleep LOL!)

    24. I would spend more money on my dolls clothes than on my clothes, but for the most part I spend about the same on my dolls that I spend on me.

    25. Paying more for your Doll's clothing than your own.... is completly normal for me. All of my clothing is hand-me-downs from family and friends. If I rememeber right, the last thing I got for myself was a cool gothy coat for a tenner from a charity shop. The last thing I got for Aharon was £80 worth of stuff from Alice's Collections. And he has way more stuff than I ever would. He is one well spoiled kiddo.

    26. This is one of my biggest pet peeves T_T I often struggle with the decision of buying clothes for my dolls or myself /: Right now I'm tying to buy clothes and wigs to finish my dolls... But I also want new shoes. It's a tough choice XD

    27. Yeah... Guilty as charged! My dolls have fancier clothes than me! I don't think I've bought anything expensive for myself clothes-wise in over a year

    28. I try not to buy clothing unless I absolutely need it (for myself.)

For my dolls I try to keep it to a maximum of one outfit each but maybe an extra shirt or something to give a little variety once in a while.

However, lately I have been spending more on my dolls' clothes than myself and my parents think I'm completely nuts. :sweat

    29. Ha! Yeeeah. Two of my girls are in a limited Volks outfit and when I went searching for the second one the only place it was was for sale anymore was a single one on Yahoo Japan. Bidding and shipping and deputy fees later, that dress cost more than any single item of clothing I've ever owned. XD;

    30. Ahaha for me doll clothes are definitely more expensive than my clothes (with the exception of a few pairs of shoes). I like to think that it's just me finding bargain deals on clothing for myself, but to be honest, it's probably the doll clothes being pricey... and me not doing anything about it. -_-;;

    31. Happens to me all the time. I won't pay even $20 for clothes for myself(But then most of my clothes come from Goodwill as of late) but I'm willing to drop $50 or more on an outfit for my dolls. They'll all be dressed up better than I am. :sweat

    32. I always make their clothing/accessories unless it's something beyond my skill level, I think its more fun and much less expensive that way

    33. Yeah I never knew doll clothes could be as expensive as real clothes. T_T I'm a really bad shopaholic.
But I guess you're gonna pay for quality and effort here. I mean like, its not mass manufacturing right. OwO?

Maybe this is an incentive to take up sewing and knitting so that we can make our own clothes and be designers ;)
or even use recycled items from the home to clear up some space ~

    34. OMG, true true true true true! The money I'd and have spent on my doll(s) through the years I could retire rich (well, not that rich). :)

    35. I've been buying my dollies more clothes than my own, tho i think i have enough clothes to last for a year or 2 XD i get new clothes when there's occasions xD

    36. not always ...but yeah sometimes when I found out the price for their outfit is higher I get a little bit ... you know... unevenness..perhaps :p

    37. Its really sad that I pay more for clothes for my doll than I do for myself lol. I hardly shop for myself anymore because of it l

    38. Sure enough xD; I have no inhibitions in doing just that. I'm not interested into broadening my wardrobe and when I 'do' do that it hardly costs anywhere close to what a dress for a BJD would cost me or around there maybe if I really feel the need to splurge on a jacket or shirt I've fallen in love with. Still, I'd far more readily give that much or even twice as much for clothing and wigs for my dolls than I would for myself. Of course I make my own outfits too since I know how to sew and embroider and am learning how to knit, but that doesn't mean I don't want to buy nicely made things from third parties for my dollies still.

    39. I find some of the more lavish doll clothes quite expensive, but then again so much work must go into those outfits. You get what you pay for.
However I defenitely spend more on my own clothes. I'm not fussed about the latest fashion, but I do like quality, so when I do buy new things I tend to spend that little bit more.
Eeach of my dolls only has one or two outfits each so far, and I those are reasonably priced things from Etsy rather than the expensive brand clothes. When I get a bit more settled into this hobby I'll probably start looking at the more pricey stuff.

    40. my wardrobe is full of jeans from the marketplace, hoodies and t-shirts with funny sayings on them..thinking about it, it's a little bit nerdy..but honestly i don't care so much ..nay, i prefer this casual style..i really love t-shirts with nerdy sayings! XD
I think that I could spend much more for my doll that for myself! XD

    41. I work everyday so my clothing for myself consists of uniform and then a few things for my one day off. So I figure the money I'd spend on myself if I were 'normal' I can spend on the girls :)
I don't grumble at the price of doll clothes as long as the quality matches the amount i'm paying!

    42. I definitely spend more on my dolls for clothing than myself and they definitely wear nicer stuff. But, I'm okay with this. I've never been one to dress up, and I'd much rather buy my dolls some nice clothes and stare at them in those outfits, not stare at myself in an equally nice outfit. I am a T-shirt and jeans sort of girl.

    43. I wear scrubs for work. They are cheap. My shoes are pricey. Mostly I make doll clothes..but I dont really care how much the fabric costs. I want to buy a nice SD size trench coat. Its easier for me somehow to spend on my dolls. I dont care enough about my own day to day clothes.

    44. I try not to. I mean, I love my doll, but I am a human and she is an object :sweat. It has to be a really perfect and amazing clothing to make me buy it way too expensive.

    45. I quickly realized that most doll clothes are more expensive than I would ever pay for my own so now I've got a weird/skewed sense of what's okay for a price. :sweat I don't entirely mind it because I know I can make clothes for them myself and if I desperately want a certain outfit for my dolls, I'll pay for it.

    46. I don't have much variety when it comes to my closet, but I guess my clothes can get fairly expensive (though I usually do wardrobe hauls once a year, so of course it gets expensive when it's all at once). I have not bought any clothing for my doll yet, but what I have been looking at and wanting to buy is definitely more than what I would probably end up spending on myself. :sweat Though I do want to keep clothing costs down for my dolls and will attempt to make clothes or just keep a limited wardrobe for them. x'D I have my needs too and I like clothes shopping for myself to a fair extent.

    47. My dolls only wear clothes that I make, but they definitely have significantly more shoes than I do. MUCH more!

    48. I own a couple of Lolita brand dress like BABY, IW, AP... So most of my clothes are just a little more expensive than my dolls' outfits. However all my girls are also in Lolita style clothes so their clothes cost my a fortune as well...Plus wigs, eyes, and shoes, they all add up the value. I'd say I've spend pretty much the same amount on my dolls.

    49. I do find it annoying, however the doll clothing is all handmade and the fabric is usually a great quality. When we buy clothing for ourselves it is mass produced (most likely in China) and the fabric is usually very thin unless you are a fashion enthusiast. If you find handmade clothing in our sizes you'll find it is quite pricey as well.

    50. Ever try to sew a detailed piece on such a small scale? It's not easy! I don't mind dropping a load of cash on a designer dress set. They come with lots of pieces that can be mixed & matched, and they hold up well. I don't spend so much on my own clothes as I mostly wear jeans & t shirts, but I do buy pricy shoes and maybe one or two fancy, expensive pieces a year for me to wear. You really do get what you pay for!

    51. The individual pieces cost about the same, but overall of course I spend much more on myself because of the quantity of clothing, clothing for different weather, clothing for different occasions, and so on - whereas the doll gets a much more limited wardrobe that I will only add to on my whim.

The doll clothing prices in general seem quite fair to me. It's not a mass-produced item, it's an artisan's piece. Consider how much it would cost you for time and materials to create the same clothing in the same detail. Now consider how much practice it would take you to create the same clothing in the same detail at that level of quality. I know that if I were paying myself even half my salary per hour and adding in cost of materials, I'd end up at a cost of over $60 for a simple pair of doll jeans, and they would be crappy jeans that I would never pay for. I'm not even going to consider how much time it would take me to improve enough that my work is at a quality that I'm willing to buy - it's certainly more time than I'm willing to invest in the effort.

I do see sometimes clothing that is poor quality being sold at far over its value, but on the whole I think the doll clothes are a fair price range for what they are.

    52. I mostly wear clothing from Target and Goodwill, with a few comic or band shirts that I get at conventions/Hot Topic/tours. I have a couple of pairs of "real" Levis (I mostly wear the Levi Authentics from Target), and that's about it. A pair of Chucks last me at least a year, maybe two. Once I live on my own, I won't spend that much on clothing, especially since I stopped growing. I'll occasionally spend more money on my own clothing if it's for cosplay, but that's a totally different story.

My dolls (well, currently single doll), on the other hand, seem to need far more clothing than I do. I think clothing is very reasonable. Think about a $50-$150 limited outfit set--a nice fancy costume one, like the DollHeart 2012 Alice in Wonderland ones, with a corset, skirt, petticoat, stockings, top, jacket, hat, etc. It would be reasonable to spend $300+ on the same outfit in human scale! It takes a lot of work to make such small clothing, and to make it look nice, with all the little finicky details.

So it's worth it, even if I don't always have the money for it. But the dolls are the same deal.

    53. Like the above poster, I get most of my clothes from Target and Goodwill, and occasionally from the 'clearance' section of Kohl's, haha. But I don't need to buy clothes very often because I have a closet full of them. My dolls, on the other hand, only have a few items between them (I've been a bit lazy with buying for them). So I don't need any more clothes, but they certainly do.

I'd be perfectly willing to drop $50 or more on an outfit set or even a single piece of clothing for my dolls, provided I liked it well enough, but I would never pay $50 for a shirt or jeans for myself--just because there are so many cheaper alternatives with the same quality. The same doesn't go for doll clothes: they're small and harder to make, so there aren't $10 knockoffs of a $32 pair of jeans.

    54. Per item I spend more on my dolls clothes than my own, but I buy more clothes for myself than my dolls. However there are exceptions, I figure skate and I've paid $300 for a dress before. The most expensive normal clothing item I own for myself is an $80 AllSaints shirt, but this was a bit of a wild venture for me! Everything else is from cheap places like Primark. I'll only pay a higher price on things which are either: hand-made, made to fit, good quality materials or if I've literally been drooling over them for weeks. Usually dolls clothes cover three of those so it's worth it.

    55. I have not yet paid more for a doll outfit than what I would pay for an outfit for myself. Actually most of the doll clothing I really like seems to be reasonable considering the time and effort that is put into such a small garment. I would like to sew for my dolls eventually. Shoes - now they can be pricey! I do not buy expensive shoes for myself, so seeing prices for some doll shoes is a bit of a shock. However, doll shoes are so adorable and my dolls have plenty.

    56. I rotate between spending :3
like ill go a month buying nothing but stuff for my doll and smaller accessories for myself then the next month ill buy my clothes.
i havent spent that much on clothing (i dont think so ) but I know that the last outfit I bought for my doll was like 73 dollars and few weeks after when i was shopping for summer stuff I only spent about 30 :p
at first I felt a little guilty but after I saw that I bought the very last one in stock I really didn't regret it.

ps I wish sadol made clothes for people.

    57. I paid $300 for a pair of boots for myself last year. That's more than some of my actual dolls are worth, let alone any item of clothing. I do not shop for my clothing at Wal-Mart unless it's something basic like underpants or PJs. I have a lot of dolls and they have a lot of clothes, but I really don't like paying more per piece for their clothes than I do for my own. I have a few "expensive" doll clothing items, but generally speaking, most of the things I buy for them are reasonably cheap.

    58. I'm on a fixed budget (yep, fixed income uni student, in this hobby - oddly enough I wasn't in the same situation when I got into the hobby!) and so my clothes, and my doll clothes, need to be as inexpensive as possible. I sew most of my girls clothes, so that helps! My tinies however (two pukifee and a pukipuki) don't get a lot of new clothes cause I am just not so great at sewing their tiny sizes!

    59. Yea, I'm guilty of that.......I have spent more money on my dolls clothes than I do on myself at times and it is surprising to myself as well, but the thing is I have more clothes than my dolls and go shopping for clothes more often than I do for them so I guess it isn't as bad XD;;;

    60. Yeah I would say my dolls have nicer clothes then I do. I would never dream of spending that kind of money on clothes for myself..... wow- when I read this back to myself it really make me think.
