What sort of period clothing are you interested in? Periods are sorted by rough dates and locations (ie, Renaissance Spain) Here are a couple of the free resources I've found over the years:

I know there are some youtubers who show you how to make "bjd clothes diy," I'm not particularly helpful with recommendations there. I make the majority of my clothes from scratch, so that would have to be something others could point you to. I would also recommend going to your local library and searching for "doll clothes" or "teddy bear clothes" and adjusting the patterns to fit. They would have more contemporary patterns in my experience, and are free. There is also a patterns pin in the general discussion (if memory serves) so that is another established place to look.
