For my art project at school lately, I've been looking at books, and I made some bjds from paper mache, and then covered them with book pages... I found that paper actually works very well for this - I was expecting it to fail completely, but the results are pretty good (for art pieces, not really as functional dolls though). At first I planned to make the whole doll from clay and then put just one layer of paper all over, but after making the face form porcelain (no idea why I used this - I do NOT recommend :dead) it all broke and cracked - The back broke off and is visible here, so I glued it back and made a mould with silicon and some casts in plaster - When I finally got one that filled the whole mould I covered it with paper - the body was made from card and built up with paper pulp - took a while but finally finished her, she is about 35cm tall and when I was sculpting her head I used pics of SD four sisters as a guide - so she kind of resembles that mould... this was my first head sculpting attempt, so it's far from perfect
Here she is in her alice dress! And i also made a 60cm version - I was going for a sort of alien/fetus look... :dead.. yes, i'm wierd lol
Wow, those are really wonderful! I like them very much, especially the way you did the dress to match. Awesome!
Wow! I can't believe that turned out so good! I love her in that dress, and her face is very cute too. Great job!
These are the greatest!! I really like this idea alot; the finished project looks amazing. Just out of curiosity, what book/s did you use on the final, exterior layer?
Wonderful creative and original!!! I suppose my comments aren't though, but she really is all of those things!
What a fantastic idea! I love her paper dress so much~ She looks like a 3-D (like computer generated) model, it's really cool!
this is a fantastic concept! They used to use paper mache slip to make dolls, so i don't see why a bjd couldn't be cast in it. And i love the book choice for covering her as well.
Incredibly clever work! I especially love the photos in the middle with the doll in the dress. :3 I've experimented with using printed-on paper in my "2-D" artwork and tried paper mache works before - but I'd never quite got the nerve up to try any sort of "puppet", much less a properly jointed doll!
Amazing! You got really unique idea there, and it works great! These really make overturn to my image of BJDs. Hehe. Keep it up! We really need some genious and differend points of views here.
the fact that she's made of paper mache really adds to the fragility of her look, because it's got to be an incredibly delicate process to get all that detail.
This is fantastic! i love the idea of covering her up in writing. And especially the 60cm doll looks so sweet--makes me all grabby!
Whoa, this is fantastic! What a cool concept, and you executed it beautifully. I might have to try this myself..
Holy Cow! That is such a cool concept for a doll! And she is so delightful! I love the one in the dress. Knocks my socks off!
That's a brilliant idea! You've inspired me to definitely go for the random wisp of an idea that has been floating in my mind
Lark Crafts has a call for entries out for a 500 Paper objects book atm. It's free to enter and would be a great way to put these "paper dolls" out there. www.larkcrafts.com
