Paper clay, crayola och polymer?

Sep 28, 2011

    1. Hi, I'm a total beginner at making dolls, but it seems like so much fun, so I've decided to try it out! I've been browsing the forum but here I am with my n00b-questions, so please bear with little me^^;

      I'm thinking of making my doll out of paper clay, but someone told me that you need to use resin too if you use it. And yeah, I don't want to work with resin, I just might kill myself X3 So can I use only paper clay to make my doll?

      I'm also thinking about using crayola or polymer clay. Since I'm a complete beginner, which one do you guys/girls think would be best to work with/give best result, out of paper clay, crayola or polymer? :o

    2. It's my first time too and I'm trying crayola, I like it but don't recommend it for your first doll.

    3. I used la doll on my first doll. It's nice and sturdy when dried and all air drying. I think it's a nice beginner clay, and not too expensive either.

    4. @Sophiapony: Is there a reason you don't recomend crayola? Is it hard to work with?

      @clarinetplayer: That actually sound pretty good (googled it)! But I live in Sweden, and I don't want to order from another country, the shipping would kill me, so unfortunately I can't use that one :c

    5. Crayola clay

    6. I see, then I definately won't use that stuff, I get irritated if something cracks one time, but if it happens a lot, I will crack up! X3 I think I'll go with super sculpey, it seems farily easy to work with^^

    7. One last question, does supersculpey dry quickly? So if I make mistakes, I can't fix them?
      Is it the same for paperclay, since it's an airdrying clay?

    8. Super Sculpey and any other polymer clay will stay workable until you bake it, sometimes for months even years. After a very long time it gets crumbly and unusable, but it wont "dry" until you bake it. once baked it will go hard, but you can add fresh clay and bake again if you need to make changes. It can also be carved once baked.

    9. popping in to say that I might have been the one that said to not make a finished doll with paperclay. It's not strong enough to be a doll you can play with. It's great for an art doll to sit on your shelf... but if you want to play with your doll a lot and dress it and all that good stuff you'd want to cast it. I personally like paperclay because of how fast i can sand it smooth- but i cast.

      Like Irandom says, the polymer clay will stay workable till you bake it. It's much stronger than the paperclay, although if you string it too tightly after baking it can crack.

    10. Thanks for the answers everybody, you're great! :arrr

      SarahM: Woah, if it's like that then I definately will not go with paperclay, since I will want to play with it a bit if it turns out okay. Thanks for pointing that out, since I don't know how to cast I will go with Super Sculpey^^
