Supplies Paintbrushes for Face-ups

Aug 15, 2004

1. I really like Volks Zoukei-mura Face Painting Brush 03 (seen here). ^^ I have yet to try their Face Painting Brush 01, but I've found 05 and 07 to be too big for me to get the fine lines I like. :)

2. I pencil my brows on first with a black artist pencil, but i also use a #20 super fine brush and one so small they call it insane detail... it is so small it has no number... it is actually called INSANE DETAIL.

3. Ichigo-pan43 on here is selling artetje brushes. They're honestly the tiniest brushes I've ever seen *U* <3

4. Wow thanks for all the help:aheartbea

I have to say i wimped out doing the eye brows and lashes today on my Jessica in case i messed her up again already cleaned her 3 times:? im sure it will come with practice :chocoberry

Thinks i may order one of these brushes as i use paint for my other type of baby work and im used to it, but the brushes i use are just not fine enough for BJD work:x

5. I'll bump this up in hope to get some help.

I'm also trying to find some 20/0 brushes. The problem is that I live in Finland, and the stores here are selling 10/0 minimum size, and these are the pencils I have used so far. But, the pencil quality isn't the best ever, so they worn out after every faceup I do. It's frustrating, because I know that there are thin pencils which can be used several times before the tip worning off.

I followed the links what have been given here, but some of them didn't work, and some didn't have the brushes in stock anymore, and most of them didn't ship overseas.

I've searched these brushes for quite a while now, and found few from ebay, but the shipping quotes are ridiculous. ( 36$ from usa to finland...)

If there is someone who knows places where to buy these brushes ( preferrably inside EU ) please do let me know. I'm kind of desperate already, because I've done everything to find these, and found only few places which wont ship overseas, or ships but the shipping is over 30$ for few brushes.

This brush in fact would be the ideal for me, but doesn't have to be the same brand.

6. I know Triskel Fantasy sells 18/0 brushes. They're situated in Netherlands, so shipping inside Europe shouldn't be much of a problem.

7. Thank you Ladybug_123! I appreciate your reply!
The prices are high, but I think I'll need to live with that and pay 6€ per brush. oTL

If there are other places where these can be bought with reasonable prices, do let me know. m(_ _)m

8. Reapermini.com carries small brushes down to a 30/0. And it looks like shipping to Finland would run just under 10USD. They do not have the 20/0 in stock at the moment, but I own a 30/0 and it may work just as well if not better depending on how fine you want your details to be.

9. <3 Thank you so much, both of you Ladybug_123 and Tonboko! :3
Too bad they have only one in stock, but I'll be waiting for them to re-stock some brushes in the future!
My friend suggestedme to try some nail-art brushes as well. She uses these to do her faceups, and she does very fine line with them. I noticed these nail art brushes in ebay in very cheap prices, and the shippings from Honk Kong to Finland is also very very cheap.

I appreciate all your help, and cannot thank enough so far! m(_ _)m

10. Or you could just check local makeup or accessories shops. I got two nailbrushes for about €3. They're not very fine, but I think if you search a bit you might find something good. At least the bristles have good quality.

11. Hello! I searched but I couldn't find exactly what I was looking for, but if this is a duplicate please delete!

So I've been working on doing my own faceups for a while now and the only way I've been able to get a paint brush small enough for those little details is to cut an old one down. Unfortunately by doing that I throw off the slope of the brush and can't really get that nice pointed effect I love so much on the lashes. So I was wondering what size of paint brush is small enough and where I can get it.

Thanks so much!!!

12. After I used my Artetje brush to its end, I had to get replacements, and it was my fortune that I found two brushes in a chain store in the US. The chain store's name was "Jerry's Art-o-rama" and the two brushes I obtained are...

Sceptre Gold II in size 0000
and the
Windsor & Newton Cotman III in size 0000

I have used the Sceptre Gold and it works better than my Artetje brush, I think (either that or my skill improved since the last time I used the Artetje hahaha). I haven't gotten a chance to use the Cotman, but it's about as thin as the Sceptre.

13. Try to see if you have a local hobby/art supply shop, but a chain craft store like Michael's or A.C. Moore should have what you need. I tend to buy inexpensive Round 10/0 (and smaller) brushes that I replace fairly frequently. Liner brushes come in very small sizes, but I find the longer bristles too hard to control. I personally love nylon brushes, but you might find that you like natural or animal fibers better.

14. oh I got 20/0 and 30/0 in junkyspot! I've got a 100/0 arteje brush... I don't know if they've got an english website but I bought mine from Jen here, pm her to see if she's still got any ^_^

15. I have seen some posts where folks have mentioned these specific paint brushes which have been recommended for painting eye browns on faceups. I would like to know where to purchase these brushes. Searching on Google has no information. But, feedback for a 'Jen' who has sold them on DOA was the only link I could find. I could not find a 'Jen' on DOA.

Thanks in advance.

16. Hi! Sorry if this isn't allowed, I wasn't too sure. I've seen others ask for pictures of supplies before but I don't know the extent that is allowed.

Anyways I was hoping too see how small the eyelash brushes other people use are. I've tried all kinds of sizes, I even ordered one off of junky spot someone said would be good, but I still can't seem to get that hair thin line I want. One person who showed me a picture of her lashes said she cuts her brushes to the right size, so I'm hoping to be able to do that once I know how thin I should cut them.

Thanks a bunch!

17. The only place I know off the top of my head is the Australian dealer Ningyotan (- sorry, I would make that a hyperlink, but for some reason the formatting isn't working!), but they just sold out on them (I bought the last brush >>;; ), but they're restocking soon and ship internationally, if you want to wait!

18. Thanks, grimgoblin, I'll await their re-stocking as I heard that those brushes are excellent for painting eyebrows.

19. There is a user named ichigo-pan43 if i remember correctly who sells them on the markets here :). I got mine from her. search for artetje in the markets.

20. Here is her thread:

currently however the brushes are sold out, but her thread says to PM her if you want one and she will try to get some more i guess? lol.

I have bought the 100/0 brush through her in the past, its very nice. I got it for eyebrow hairs and eyelashes but i ended up not really using it as it was TOO small for my liking, but theyre great brushes.

21. I should be getting an Artjetje 100/0 Super Fine brush in the mail within the next few days, so I'll take photos of that when for you once it comes in (unless that's the one you ordered). :)

22. No, I ordered the Gunze Mr Brush - Round Type Size 000 off of junkyspot. I would love to see your brush, thank you! ^_^

23. Just updating to say how I got on with my Artetje 100/0 and nail brushes.
Honestly, I hate the 100/0 and cannot get along with it!!
I find the loooonngg liner brush from my cheapo set so much better and easier to control.
It made eyebrows look beautiful, unlike the Artetje. :sweat

24. I want to get a really really fine brush, but I haven't found any that are fine enough at craft stores in my area. Before I spend $9 on this brush, could any one give me a mini review?

25. ~((Preface))~
I'm thinking of starting to practice faceups with a goal of being able to paint all my dolls myself so they have the same style faceup. I took a Dolpa faceup class in LA a few years back and have all of the materials left over still. So to keep in the same theme I was thinking of buying a few more volks brushes... but there seems to be multiple types now? :?

~((Questions))~~
• What are the differences between "Mink," "Cat," and "Synthetic" by means of usefullness?
• Are they used for different things, would one want an assortment?
• Do they feel different to use?
• I already have an "07" which is mink and I know I need a thinner one, but really how many brushes do you need?

26. The mink and cat hairs are a bit more stiff and springy than the synthetic hairs. I use mink. It's all preference-- neither are more useful than the other. I prefer a stiffer brush to do eyelashes and other hairs with, but I know many people who use very soft liner brushes to do their thin lines and they would probably prefer the softer synthetic for that reason. Volks says that they think mink is good for doing linework from the stiffer hairs. They definitely feel different. I started out with synthetic to save the meager few bucks years ago, and now have moved entirely to mink. I use one brush for the entire face-up, and I use the 01.

I, myself, don't feel like I need more than one brush. I think that's also preference. I like the versatility of the 01, because it's thick enough to do eyeliner. Making thin lines is dependent on skill and not the thickness of the brush, so if you really wanted to you could keep practicing with your 07 and you'll be fine. : ) 01 is not the thinnest brush out there-- it's many times thicker than the liner brushes that a lot of other artists use, but it works perfectly for what I need. Here's a photo that has an out of focus 01 in the foreground and some brushwork done with it in-focus in the back.

27. I cannot seem to find any over here in the UK, or will at least ship to us, not even on eBay! Does anyone have any tips on where I can get a super fine brush to paint eyebrows and eyelashes here in the UK, or will ship here? Any help would be very much appreciated!

28. Have you checked with your local art stores? They might be able to order for you from the brands they carry.

29. Funny, whenever I check for finer brushes it seems all of them are being sold in the UK. ;)

Does it have to be 18/0? I've spontaneously only found 20/0 while searching.

30. Thanks guys! The 20/0 should be okay :) thanks very much!

31. You're welcome.

And in case anyone knows a good source to get 20/0 or even smaller here in Germany, I'd be forever grateful ;).

32. Hi,

I need to find extra thin brushes and i am UK based. I'd like to know where you get yours from and if possible pics of the results.

Thank you!

33. Game workshop, Hobbycraft, Modelzone and random toy shops are a few where I get mine from ^^
Generally look for the plane/train model isles and they should have the tiny brush and paints shelf next to them.
They tend to always be the Revell brand.

34. What sizes do you normally buy?
Does it equates to Zoukeimura NY-01 Brush? Or which size would be the smallest you can find in the UK?
Sorry to be a bother. I still don't understand brush sizes and don't want to go out and buy them, realising at the end they're to big or not for me.

35. A friend of mine buys the smallest brush size of the kind of brush she wants, and then cuts most of the outer hairs off with an xacto until there's a super small "core" of a couple hairs in the middle.

36. That's what I do, too. I just got too frustrated finding a small enough brush. Make sure they are quality brushes, since the bristles are usually held in by pressure. When you lose some hairs, they will start to fall out faster.

37. A good one to buy in the UK is a Da Vinci 10/0 brush you can get them from any art shop, I think they have them down at the London graphics Centre if you're near Landaannn. Otherwise it's amazon

38. I got a 10/0 in hobbycraft recently! I couldn't believe it! :p

39. I get mine from Ruddocks of Lincoln, but unless you're not close, I don't know if they're anywhere else..

40. I've used "Insane detail" brush from Games workshop and I've never seen anything thinner. It's £2.75ish off eBay UK.

41. Just wanted to get the opinion of some people.
What is your favorite brush to use for painting eye lashes and eye brows?
Im looking for something available in the US.
I know the Volks-01 brush is tiny but there is tinier ones out there.
How good is the Volks brush for fine details?

Thanks! :)

42. I've found that the paintbrushes used for nail art are amazing and small!! I got some on ebay for 99 cents with free shipping. Yeah, I'm going to have to wait a few weeks for them to arrive, but they'll work perfectly!

43. I recently tried the Volks ZM-Special Brush-01 ... and it was SO much better than any other brush I've tried! It was almost like magic!

Before, I'd always have tiny brushes that ran out of paint too quickly... or blobbed the paint... or didn't keep a very fine point... This brush has an AMAZING point to it. I could get into the grooves of the lips without blobbing paint on either side. It carries enough paint so that I can do one or two eyebrow hairs or eyelashes before going back for more paint. It really made a difference!

Of course, keeping a steady hand (I can't very easily--need to brace my hand with the other hand and really concentrate), and getting the thinness of the paint right is important, too. That takes practice and patience.

44. Buahaha Sorry ...I am just smashed by your resourcefulness. Wouldn't repeat that on my cat though
