So, I can tell I'm improving with taking photo's but I feel that I could do better. Here's some I recently took both edited version and unedited version. I do like what I did with the photo's but I feel that it might be to much and maybe should of left them alone. Also I take the same shots over and over with my doll doing the same thing but in different angles because I have no idea what else to do. Any advice and what you think about the pictures?
In my personal opinion...I like both of the edits because they have an almost cross-processed look to them and I love CP pics. I like the edits but I could also see where people might consider it overedited. I think it would just depend each individual's taste on that one. In my personal opinion, they look nice. The editing give them a classic fairytale feel and I do not think the editing is too over the top. =3 Also, in my opinion, both photos (without editing) are nice, but I do feel the first one is a little on the dark side (not enough light I mean). The editing pulled it together a bit more.
I like the first one best, the flower and softness gives it a sort of 1920s look which I like I feel the background could do with being more blurred, as all the leaves lend a busy look and keep distracting me. In the second set of photos, the concrete is quite ugly and harsh compared to the softness of the shot. Perhaps try finding some grass to shoot on. For inspiration on different poses, try having a look at lots of different photos to get ideas; not just doll photos, but also in fashion magazines, adverts, etc. I feel the composition is a bit bland, so maybe try doing something really different that you haven't tried before, to widen your comfort zones. Like taking a picture with your doll in the corner, rather than the middle - that sort of thing. Also read up on composition theory like the rule of thirds (dividing a picture into nine segments, and putting the focus of interest into a bisecting segment). Just let your eye guide you, and the crop tool is your friend!
I personally do not feel these are over edited. They have a lovely lomography feel to them, and if that's what you're going for you've got it spot on! I would however suggest you look into some compositional "rules" for photography to help make your photos pop. As they are now, they're nice... But not terribly exciting or appealing to me. Never be afraid to experiment or try something you think will look stupid or make a bad photo. Some photos that I consider my best were only possible when I thought "what if...?" and just went for it. I know what you mean, getting into that photo rut where it's difficult to figure out new ways to take pictures. It's difficult to get out of! But you can do it. A good challenge and a way to get new inspiration is to look at portraits in fashion magazines and try to copy them using your doll. (it may not always be possible to copy the pose exactly, but this exercise opens up your mind to new posing ideas and options for photos) Hope that helps!
I think they look lovely if you're worried about over editing, usually when a photograph has a lot in it (e.g. full body shot) it's better not to heavily edit it, whereas when there isn't a whole lot going on in a photograph, lots of editing can look pretty neat (Don't kill me if you disagree T.T it's just my opinion)
I guess I have a slightly different take on them - The unedited pix look a little dull, but I feel the PS'ing, especially in the first pic, is making the pink flower stand out too much, and the doll's pretty face retreats in its shadow. If anything, I would have brushed a lightening brush along the irises and brightened them. The pix also look like they were either taken in overcast light, or underexposed just a bit. Using just a tone-adjustment filter (don't know what it's called in PS, as I use a different program that has a "tone map" to selectively lighten high, medium, or dark tones) on the lighter areas would have brightened and increased "crispness". (That's also a huge flower for that little head. For the closeup, I would have taken the shot more from stage-left, i.e., pushed the flower more into the background and let her face take center-stage. That's a very cute outfit/ensemble, BTW!
lots of people have already weighed in so i'll keep my 2c short - i enjoy your edits more and think they are superior. you are on the right track, and they have a great luminescent vibe to them. i would prefer the edits to the originals, and i don't think you have overdone the editing either.
