Outside photoshoots - Standing on grass?

Jun 16, 2010

    1. I just took King outside for the first time ever and let me tell you. She did NOT want to stand on the grass at all.

She stood fine on the carpet, and standing on anything smooth and flat is no problem.

Any tips for a newbie on getting your doll to stand on grass? I do plan on sueding (Probably hot glue, since it seems easiest to me, but I'm still doing my research), but that's not been done yet. Not sure if that would help to make a difference...

(I do hope it's okay to post this here. It's not ... really about photography, but as it wasn't about care and maintenance or clothing and aesthetics, I figured it would be best here. I do apologise if that is not the case and I made some extra work for the mods :c)

    2. It largely depends on the doll, I've got dolls who'll stand like a dream on anything and some that refuse to stand on anything that isn't dead flat and solid. Hot glue sueding the ankle joints may help though largely it's down to patience, if you hold the dolls feet down while you carefully adjust their position it's usually possible to get most dolls to stand on grass.
Though of course if it's windy out or it's a particularly uneven patch of grass but you're determined to get the shot I'd suggest maybe having someone with you to spot, just in case the doll decides to faceplant since god knows the split second decision of dropping a camera vs letting the doll fall is never a nice one.

    3. I made tiny platforms for my doll to stand on in the grass. They were basically wood shims with big nails driven through them so that I could stake them into the park grass where I wanted him to stand and they were small enough to be covered by his boots.

And of course the ever important neck strap so I could drop the camera to catch him!

    4. @ St. James ~ That's a good idea. o3o Like cleats, kinda.

    5. Yeah, kinda like cleats. You really only need a 3x8cm flat shim and a single 10cm nail for each foot to rest on. It helps for them to be separate pieces so you can adapt to the terrain. :)

    6. Ah, how clever.

When I was out yesterday, I thought I had a ... like, a bit of cement that's used to make a path? I thought I had something like that for King to stand on, but I couldn't find it.

Your idea is really good, and I might actually be able to do that! Thanks so much!

(Also, Kaspar is stunning in that shot!)

    8. That is an absolutely brilliant solution! So brilliant in fact, that I instantly want to copy it...

How did you make the stand? Is that a barbecue skewer you've used?

    10. Hmm ... I'll have to start shopping around for one ... but how did you make the part that grips the waist?

If you could post the tutorial in English, I'm sure it would be widely appreciated... :)

(Adore your Sephiroth, btw ... where'd you get his katana?)
