one way to approach sculpting a grouchy angel bjd

Nov 14, 2005

    1. hey Rave,

have you gone to the tinies forum here on DOA? they have a stickie for comparison pics, and you can get really clear pictures of the bodies from the front... (not their size, but you can compare them to one that you do know the size of to get a better idea)...

i was also loving the pics i found in the bjd gallery here....

do you have pics to post yet?

i got sidetracked - a 3d animator asked me to do a character sculpt for him to animate, and i need to get it to him in a couple of weeks, so i've set aside the grouchy angel till i get that and a juried portfolio done.

hope to see pics of everyone else's evolving bjds...

      patl

    3. hey Rave,

I'm getting an access denied message on your picture - can you post a url to it instead?

      take care

    4. I am blown away by your work facinating!!

I would VERY much like to see a step by step face tutorial, like many I have problems with the lips big time. Please do a step by step face build up I know just about everyone would be so grateful including me of course. I would love to know more about your background our your a professional sculptor? Do you have a website?

    5. hey Treelore,

I'll check with the mods and see if it would be ok to post a step by step face tutorial. what would be awesome would be if we could get lots of the people sculpting here to submit their own also ---- you can always learn by seeing how other people do things.

thanks so much for your kindness. I'm almost done with the urgent projects so i should be back to finishing off the angel soon. I don't make my living by my sculpting - but I do sell --- enough to keep me in clay and bjds so that is cool. If you would like to see more of my figures (only 1 bjd up there at this point) I have a website at

      http://shadows.4oni.com

      or at my epilogue.net site

      http://www.epilogue.net/cgi/database/art/list.pl?gallery=14489&genre=2

I have the beginnings of a fae bjd - but am getting sidetracked by attempts to do a nicely jointed bjd mermaid tail....

so little time, so many awesome things to try....

    6. I just had a lovely time browsing through your clay figures, wow, such awesome work! :D I love your fantasy style, with all the human/animal combinations. I really love “The Dragon” and “The Dancer”, and there’s a little centaur boy X3 *squueee!*

And I totally agree, there really is so little time, and so many awesome things to try.... O_O

    7. hey Lithe-fider,
thank you kindly for the lovely words - hey! did you notice the centaur flying a kite at epilogue?

i really like centaurs - but i haven't been courageous enough to try jointing one like you...

      take care

    8. OMG if you were to post a step by step on how to do a face, I would worship you forever... I mean it! I am waiting my first doll but I am so tempted to try my hand at a doll too But I am a little chicken... I need to get some sculpey and try it.

But I hope the mods let you do that tutorial!!! I love your other work too so detailed =D

    9. hey acexkeikai,

the mods say yes so I'll try to get a face tutorial going... congrats on your first doll - who did you get? but you should go ahead and try a head too,
you never know if sculpting might just catch you up and you find something you want to spend the rest of your life doing....

      take care
      patl

    10. He's a Souldoll Lune. and I... :: goes on her knees and grovels:: Thank you so much for doing this tutorial and the face tutorial =D I'm already a graphic artist, but I have been chicken about trying to sculpt a face. I think I'll get a big box of Sculpey or do you think ProScult to be better? I'll definatly try during the Christmas vacation (I have 2 weeks off work) As I do the esthetics and face on my Lune ^___^

    11. Very Cool! I took the ashbet method of attacking a DD head with clay, and now I think I'm going to attempt your method. Spiffy! I'll post pics if it's cute.

    12. wow this is amazing!:love this is like a perfect tutorial!
      keep up the good work!

    13. hey guys, December was way too crazy.... so sorry to disappear for so long. My daughter Meagan (of DarkMothFlame) did a wonderful faceup on Pidge (this little grouchy angel) blushed her body and made a quick outfit for her....

and i've posted a quick series of pictures of her with my Bermann, Ariel over in the Gallery

      http://www.denofangels.com/forums/showthread.php?t=39655

hope you enjoy her - and that there are many more original bjd's being posted for me to see?

    14. Wow, now I really want to try making myself a BJD like that :) It turned out so cute!

    15. She is so pretty. :)

    16. you did a wonderful job. what a cranky little lovely. =)

    17. how amazing! you seem to do modeling much better than drawing~=D
I like this kind of realistic but also cartony look, and also her expression, what a naughty kid(just like my cousin)~hahaha~

    18. wow she's lovely =D soooo... how's that tutorial going? ^.~ Don't worry! I know December was crazy for me too so don't worry. =D Got my sculpey... and did the face up on my doll... I need to make clothes though

    19. Hi Patl
      Congratulations for your beautiful work!
Thank you for dividing your knowledge with all of us..
Am I trying to build a BJD, however am I with difficulties in doing the members, does some exist tutorial that teaches to do the arms and legs?
A great hug and once again thank you.

    20. Hi Patl!
Do I see that you are using beads to do the joints but the movements are not without control using beads? I tried to do a mini doll using beads and I didn't get natural movements, the members bent forward and back.
      Hugs,:) :)

    21. hi Pituca,

you can control the movements you get by changing the shape of the hole in the bead, and by making the shape of the clay around the bead different in front than in back.

hmmm - i'm stuck at work right now. I'll take some pics when I get home and try to show you what i mean...

    22. Between all the artists on here, perhaps they could be gathered together to make one... something tells me it might sell well...

    23. ehm...hi,i'm an italian girl and i want make a bjd with prosculpt like Patl...
i have a question for patl:how make the legs
(sorry for my english,i don't speak this language):sweat

    24. hey guys,

sorry I didn't reply sooner on showing how to make the joints, my day job took all my time. but I think I've finally figured out a good way to explain about the balls and the joints - so I'll try to draw today and post tomorrow.

Lausan - I'll include legs too

    25. Oh wonderful!! how to make the stringing holes would be wonderful too.

      :) can't wait!

    26. I am just WOW. How AWESOME this thread is. I am just amazed by this doll. Words can't sum it up.. just WOW.

    27. this thread has inspired me to actually try my hand at sclulpting my own doll. thank you, patl!

    28. You make it look so easy. :)

    29. Your doll has turned out incredibly well, It has really made me feel it is possible for one of us 'real people' to actually make our own bjds. Thanks for sharing.

    30. *waits anxiously perched on the edge of my seat* I have found your tutorial fascinating and wonderfully helpful:D I was hoping you might continue with your explanation of the joints and show us how you did them:3 I think your doll is just amazing! I'm anxious to create my first bjd and I'm so glad to have your thread to refer to:D

    32. Awwwww. This thread is fantastic. :)

    33. Hi,
Sorry for this idiotic question, but I really have no idea whatsoever re: kinds of clay to use for sculpting. What do you recommend for my first try? I would just like to do a face. Please and thank you... =)

    34. I know this is an EXTREMELY old thread but I some how stumbled across it and I must say WOW!

      Thank you SO much!

I now think I might give making a BJD a go. When I get some time that is :| :doh

      but thank you sooooo much!
