I was wondering if anyone else had a resin BJD that was off-topic because their doll was from a teeny-tiny company that wasn't DOA-approved yet? I would love to see/hear about some other individual sculptor/small company works, because I love seeing what they accomplish. Plus, I would like to see more BJD sculptors become approved. I'm planning to talk to the sculptor of my doll head about DOA, but right now language is a huge barrier. Anyone else having that issue?
I'd love to know about small companies. I firmly believe in supporting small companies with dolls or anything else.
I love small companies! Here are some sculptors that sell bjd: Abigale doll:
My favorite small company is Nandoll. I really love my IsaacB head that I ordered from them. If I can afford to, I'm hoping to order their Damien head while they have an open pre-order period. Also, @Copcop the L'armoire de Dandan dolls are extraordinary! Thank you so much for sharing your wonderful list!
Well, I'm pretty sure Conarium is on-topic since one of their candle stick heads was offered as a prize in a contest here.
Conarium, Crimson Doll, Shoushou, L'armoire de Dandan and Youpla are all On Topic. The other three would need to be looked over by the staff, but nobody who knows about them have brought them up in Ask the Mods for consideration. More than likely, they would all be on topic. If anyone sees a company that makes resin dolls that seem to meet the criteria, you can always bring them to the staff via Ask the Mods and we will do our due diligence to check them out~
Oh thank you! I thought that companies had to come to DOA to approved on their own. I'll bring them up in Ask the Mods!
I have a couple of dollhouse scale people that aren't on topic because they have no changeable eyes, yes. They were each made by one artist and are no longer made anymore. Illuminated Doll Iphigenia, and a Garmonsway Chris.
Thanks! Painting them was.... a new stretch to my limits, that's for sure. Their eyes are so tiny. And yeah their sculpting is just amazing. I SO wish both their creators had been able to make more dolls...
They're such lovely dolls that it makes me sad to know they are no longer made. I hate seeing artists, creators, and small companies struggle to make it or be unavle to continue. And I would imagine they'd be difficult to paint, with such small details. My sister-in-law makes 1:12 scale polymer clay food and dioramas, and it's amazing to watch how delicate the whole process is. It's so impressive, the patience you have to have, to paint such small parts. I'm like a bull in a China shop, so maybe that's why I collect SD size!
Oh thank you! And yes I so wish there were more from these artists! 1:12 scale is super teeny, but it's so fun because of all the dollhouse stuff you can get. I have one more Iphigenia in white resin from a casting run that had big flaws, so she's more of a kit doll because I'll have to finish her myself. I want to make her a gorgeous mermaid tail instead of her legs and build a little "magic aquarium" set to pose her in.
GothicAngelbjd's gorgeous Cain sculpt. And yeah, I own one, and he's lovely. His illustration come to life style is absolutely perfect as my take on Sir Samuel Vimes of Discworld fame - via the Paul Kidby illustrations. (Weirdly I think some of her stuff is on topic but other work isn't? For instance, the elf-eared version of Cain is on topic - but my guy with human ears... Isn't. Don't know why, but that's the main reason the small Discworld part of my group don't often get shared on here. Since a key character can't appear.)
Oops! Sorry took a little while to actually find a decent(ish... Did I mention I'm terrible at photos?) photo. I still need to actually make him his armour and work out precisely which hairstyle I'm aiming for wig-wise (I've had the worbla forever, but... Haven't quite been feeling getting into the project due to scale issues.) Um... I fully admit I'm contemplating a different body for this head, I know for a fact that it looks gorgeously well-proportioned on Venitu Timeless and up bodies - but the head I've got shelling Lord Vetinari... Is too small for that. I think I need to re-shell his Lordship and upscale Vimes - since Vimes is on a body that is arguably too small in order to be in scale with His Lordship. (But Vimes's current body has a glorious insouciant slouch that I'm not sure I'll be able to find elsewhere... Hence much procrastinating over decisions!)
Not so much short as shorter than Vetinari? The few times Pratchett bothers with physical descriptions Lord Vetinari is almost always described as tall, and this instance is a Vimes internal monologue: "He jerked himself upright, swung his legs off the bed, and folded up. It was a slow, terrible collapse. Lord Vetinari was a tall man, so there was a long way to fall. And he did it by folding up a joint at a time. His ankles gave way and he fell on his knees. His knees hit the ground with a bang and he bent at the waist. Finally his forehead bounced on the carpet." Unfortunately the head I've currently got for the Patrician can't take anything as big as the Timeless body without looking terribly pinheaded. And conversely Vimes has a fairly sizeable noggin - though one that is too perfect to swap out, so I'm contemplating a fairly big change-up.
I've always figured Vimes at around 5' 8"- not super short but shorter than a lot of men, and Vetinari is definitely tall. Over 6'. Well I hope you share with us whatever you end up doing!
I got this 14cm 1:12 girl from Olga Reingard home yesterday. I love that she is doublejointed and have shoulder and neck joints. I only buy mature proprtions bjds. Sadly I have to paint her eyes..
I have a couple on order that I think are still classified as off-topic? Doggy by Buddha BJD and the Ha head by Si Cang (and I'll be printing him a body for at least a little while; not sure if/when he'll get a resin one or not yet). I haven't received them yet though so no pics by me yet.
I just bought this to my latest Olga Reigard 1:12 and her family of 3 bjds in this size. They are on shipping now. Waiting them home next week. Hope to be able to make a stopmotion with them some day.
So this is Moon Ying from Ye Mao Zi /Chat A Feuilles (Leaf Cat) I'm sure she meets On-Topic criteria, but since I haven't gotten an answer from the mods yet I figured I'd post her here in the meantime. I was lucky to snag one from New Clover Singing when she got a few in stock, because I had missed the pre-order She's pretty cute, I hope we'll see more from that studio in the future, right now it's only her and Moon Xi, I think.
Thi is off topic bjds in size 1:12. I have to paint their eyes. They are so tiny. The girl is an Olga Reingard bjd, but the animal is made by Edouard on Artpractice on Etsy. The horse is very dark. She sits on the horse as she is made to ride.
Love her! Please do come back and share more of her if/when she gets approved as on-topic. I have a Ye Mao Zi body as well and I absolutely love it - I can't share my full doll on DoA either way as she has a Fatemoons head, but I'm dying to talk to other owners about ideas for clothes and so on.
Those are so beautiful. Dollhouse scale opens up so many things one can buy! Did you make the clothes or buy them?
TH Thank you! Doing their faceups was no small feat, I admit! I made their clothes. And I owe them some more clothes.
