Off topic and BJD Hybrids?

Apr 4, 2022

    1. Hi,

I was wondering if anyone else uses BJD parts on off topic dolls? I used to be interested in repaints and recently started noticing the big play line dolls that are available now.
I got one of the big Rainbow High dolls on sale and took off the head. Now I have a BJD head on the body, and the clothes have been scavenged for other BJDs.
I also just bought an extremely cheap, used Descendants 28 inch doll (I think it's the same body as used for the 28 inch Barbie), removed the head, and am going to modify it and put a BJD head on it.
I have not done it yet, but I have a porcelain doll I bought for the clothes, and I am thinking about making her a larger cloth body and giving her some extra resin hands I have to bring her to scale with my BJDs since her head is already the right size.

They are definitely not the same quality as resin BJDs, but the Rainbow High doll has a body shape that I can't find in that size among BJDs, and it's kind of fun to see what fits.

Has anyone else done something like this?

    2. I've not thought of doing that though I will admit to stealing clothes and one time eyes for my bjds. I'd love to see a pic of your RH/BJD hybrid. I just got the RH girl yesterday and have been planning to see if her clothes would fit any of my bjds, but never considered body swapping.

    3. I would love to see pictures of your hybrids when they're done! I have an old obitsu head on a monster high 17 inch body just because I had the parts lying around, I have been thinking about getting a 1/4 bjd head especially to put on it. I'm also really tempted to get a 28 inch monster high to hybrid a 1/3 head on, but the body doesn't have knee articulation so it would take a lot of modification work for me to be happy with it.

    4. I have a paradise skin Unoa on an Endless Hair Kingdom Barbie body and their color match is actually pretty good! I bought that body to use as a temporary for her, while I search for a permanent one, didn't expect them to work out so well!

    5. I made a walrus from a Dollzone Mr. Rabbit head ( he has a mustache!) I just took off the rabbit ears, glued on Walrus tusks, and put on a hat to cover the ear holes! Then I put the head on a Madame Alexander "Smee" doll body. "Smee" is a character from Peter Pan - he's a chubby sailor /pirate. The chubby body and the outfit looks great with the walrus head!! I get a lot of compliments on that walrus doll!

    6. For those interested:

I put a Twigling Pieta V2 head on my Rainbow High body. Neither the exterior of the body nor head have been modified, but the neck is pretty thick. Most of my 1/3 sized heads would not fit on the neck. I did break off the top of the connector on the body because it was too big to go through the hole in Pieta's neck. I attached the head to what was left of the connector with some elastic string, an S hook, and a donut.

Here she is next to a Zaoll (52cm) and a DoT hybrid (64cm) as well as a Just Play Descendants 28" doll body (I think this is the same body as used for Just Play 28" Barbies, but I don't have one to check)
The Just Play body is articulated along the entire arm but does not have jointed knees or ankles and has a big, bulbous neck. I am also going to use this for a BJD head after I modify the neck and knees, making it a few CMs shorter in the process, hopefully.

The underwear is just paint, so I might remove it. Of course, the body is also very shiny, but I imagine a spray of varnish will help.
Unfortunately, she is always on her tiptoes lol That ankle joint is pretty useless.

Both non-BJD bodies are in the 1/3 scale range. However, they do not fit most SD, SD13, etc. sizes well.
The upper body of the Rainbow High doll is fairly small and can wear SD tops well as long as they are not very long. The waist and hips are wider than on most 1/3, 1/3+ BJDs. As such, bottoms and form fitting long tops and dresses are a challenge. I have been putting her in loose fitting, stretchy 70cm boy sweatpants (The black ones in the first pic). The Rainbow High feet are really large. The plastic shoes she came with are loose on my EID woman.
The Just Play body is also thicker than a lot of BJDs. The set she is wearing is a Dollheart set meant to fit an SD or SD13 girl, but I had to swap the less stretchy shirt that came with it for a very stretchy shirt that fits over the bust and ribcage area. The jacket just barely closes.
