I recently noticed this streaky discoloration on one of my dolls, so I decided to take her apart and clean her. Dish detergent + magic eraser has gotten a lot of it off (this photo is before I cleaned her at all), but some of it is really stubborn. It’s only on her arms & hands, which are areas that are only sometimes covered by clothes. Other exposed areas are fine, though (face, neck, feet). Any ideas for how to remove it? I’m also wondering if anyone knows what may have caused it? It looks similar to the soot that used to get on things when I burned candles more often, but I’m not sure how it would have gotten on her. I stopped burning candles in the room she’s in a long time ago, & even then she was always in the closet where I keep all of my dolls. As some general info- doll is a Luts KDF Cherry that I bought secondhand in 2014. There were at least two other owners before me. She’s in normal skin, though has yellowed over the years.
That looks a lot like flaking sealant. Have you tried going at it with some isopropyl alcohol? That should get rid of it with some soft scrubbing.
To me it looks a bit like a layer of really old sealant like Mr. Superclear is there and that got stained over time. Sealants can suck up stuff and stain if clothing is too dark. Did the doll have body blushing at all? I have cleared old and stained sealant off of a second hand doll arm once that looked like that, it was a bit of elbow work and a Mr. Clean eraser and a bit of isopropyl alcohol for the stuck on bits, then soap and water to finish.
@meanae @Tippetarius That did it! Thank you both so much! Sealant never even occurred to me because her resin didn’t feel as toothy as I’d expect & she was not blushed. In retrospect though, she had the remnants of an old manicure, so it’s likely she was blushed at one point & it was never fully removed.
Doesn't even have to be due to an old blushing. Some owners used to just spray a layer of sealant over the whole body, in an attempt to keep the body from yellowing at a different rate than the sealant-covered face.
