Aesthetics OC face-up re-do

Feb 9, 2016

    1. Here is the before and after face-ups for my OC, Faye. I'm still getting the hang of sealants and for these two I used Liquitex Matte Medium with an airbrush.

I'm still working on lower lashes, I can never seem to get them as wispy and thin as others. I would appreciate some constructive criticism or advice. Thanks :3nodding:

    2. For me personally the blushing looks a little intense, but all around it looks nice! I love her eyebrows especially.

    3. you can certainly see the improvement here, the eyebrows on her newer face up look great as well as your accentuating of her upper eyelid. She looks more confident and vibrant now! I also rather like the lower lashes because they look delicate enough for me from here.

If you're using watercolor pencils for the bottom lashes, make sure your pencil is super duper sharp to make the lashes finer. It also seems to depend on the type of pencil, Prismacolors feel more grainy than say... a Derwent pencil for example. If you're using a brush and acrylics then I cant really say because I'm rather inexperienced with that.

Over all though i think your improvement clearly shows and you should def keep practicing :)

    4. @CollectiveEntity @Baihyn

Thank you both for your kind words. :3nodding:
I definitely have to invest in different watercolor pencils and pastels. My current ones get the job done, but they kind of lack in quality sometimes. Acyrlics are a whole other world for me!

    5. I think for the lower eyelashes it would be a good idea to keep the drawn part short! It looks a bit awkward when they bend off with the curve of the cheek, so keeping them up on the eyelid part would probably make it look a little better. If you want the bottom lashes to be much longer than that, I would suggest playing around with lighter colored applied eyelashes just so it still gets that long look without curving with the face.
Honestly though the second faceup is really beautiful, I think there is some pointed improvement with blushing, highlights, and eyebrows :)

    6. I agree that for lower lashes Derwent watercolour works wonders! I have worked as a portrait artist and was surprised about that since in portraits derwent pencils are far more grainy than faber-castells. But they have darker pigment and ten times more shades that allows more fine little lashes to be made. Also, I recommend that you don't make the lower lashes to cross each other too much - only a little bit to avoid the lumpy branch-like look. I think the right-side eye has this feature just right :celebrate

    7. Brows - too thick. The same for the lower eye lashes - too many and too thick.
Blushing is too much currently but if you add stronger eye shadows and eye liner it will probably balance out. Otherwise it is better if you blush out.
Lips are ok. Depending on the results after the other corrections they may be improved with additional white or bright/darker pink tones.

    8. The bottom lashes are like how I did them the first few times. I found out that doing a short light flick with my acrylic was easier. I was still new at the time and acrylic scared me but they came out ten times better and looked so soft and feathery when I crossed over them angled the opposite direction. Going a steady slow pace helped me on lashes. If I go fast, they became heavy stroked and they were not aligned with the others. It helped me to have a palette like a plate or computer paper to warm up and get my strokes ready. Then I do the doll right after. You can use water colors and a little brush if you want to remove messed up eyelashes with ease. A damp paper towel can just lift it off if you need to start over.
If using acrylic, I dilute the paint. Otherwise it will be too thick. If you don't have a tiny brush or nail art brush, trim one. The smaller the better. When I was new at faceups, I cut my brushes so thin and my faceups became way better. So check your material as well because sometimes you are doing everything right already. Trick or tip for lashes is to have a calm hand. They will look good when your done. Practice and you will find your style and technique for it. Make a few strokes on paper and then your doll right after. This is how I started out doing it. I hope this helps and sorry if it is rambling or hard to understand. :)

    9. I feel that the bottom lashes could match the applied doll lashes in terms of color and amount! Perhaps a little less of them. Those eyebrows are to die for. I love thick brows on girls with cute faces. She's totally adorable! Keep up the great work!!!

    10. I agree with a lot of the previous comments about the faceup being a little too heavy. But, that is something that it takes time and practice to learn. You seem to be on the right track, so don't lose hope.

The other thing I might suggest is a less full and shorter brand of upper lashes, like this type that Volks sells. The type she is wearing in the second picture seem far too heavy and make her look sleepy.

    11. She is so cute! I love the improvement, definitely less heavy blushing, at least it's more natural! there's a bit of smudging outside the lines on the right eyebrow, and maybe if you can't get the bottom ones dark enough, perhaps switch out the top lashes to a brown color? I love dense eyelashes, definitely a unique look!
