NYC Doll Con, March 1st & 2nd 2025

Jun 2, 2024

      Hi guys!

We're super excited to be able to FINALLY announce NYC Doll Con, running next year over March 1st and 2nd, 2025, in our lovely NYC. Per our announcement:

"NYC Doll Convention is a pro-artist, BJD and related toy focused convention, celebrating what we love so much about the hobby: the artists, creators, and fans who make the hobby so vibrant and fun. Over the course of our two-day event, we will have vendors, panels, games, a raffle, and dedicated meet-up space for casual and themed hang-outs.

Tickets will go on sale and vendor applications will open on June 22nd, 2024. More info on tickets can be found here. Information on vending can be found here.

More information can be found on our website. For any questions, please feel free to email the organizers at [email protected] ."

While we would prefer any questions about the event be sent to our email above, I will be in/around this thread, and we're super excited about the enthusiasm seen so far for this event. It has been months in the planning, and now that all the event space contracts are signed, we can finally talk about it.

    29. Hi! I've purchased tickets and am so excited for this event. I do have a general questions, just for planning!

Will there be an area for people to safely display their dolls? I'm still considering whether to bring one with me or not!

      • x 1
    30. I don't have a full answer for this, but I wanted to say that I plan to get one of the pet carrying backpacks for my larger dolls so I can have them displayed in there and then some smaller clear bags for my tinies!

*editing to add: I am thinking of printing out my dolls info on little cards as well with a QR code that links to my doll page so that people can easily get more info on them!

    31. I'm so excited! I look forward to seeing a lot of cute dolls and showing off my girl. Are people carrying their dolls in arm slings, or clear totes? I haven't decided what I'll bring to show mine off.

      • x 2
    32. Ooh, I've never seen an arm sling for dolls! Do you have photos?

      • x 2
    33. I haven't seen it with BJD, only baby dolls. I have seen it suggested, but I don't know how well it works. I asked because I was a little curious myself, but since arm slings aren't expensive, I might give it a try ;^^ I'll get photos if I do!

    34. I'm so excited for this! Definitely going to be looking into this, I've been looking for an excuse to go back to NYC and this seems like the perfect one!

      • x 2
    35. I'll probably be using some kind of ita bag/ clear backpack for mine.

      • x 3
    36. This is a lovely idea! I'm flying in and still deciding if I want to take the risk of bringing a doll. I'm sincerely tempted to buy a mature yo for traveling at this point - easier to pack, lighter to carry, less of a financial risk if anything happens.

      • x 3
    37. You could also wait until the show and get a doll there! I know there will be a lot of sellers with mature tinies that are vending so it's definitely something to consider!

In the past when I've flown, I've just tucked my MSD size dolls in my backpack (just sort of.... folded them up and wrapped them in my sweater with bubblewrap on their hands and a face cover to protect their face.) It's worked well to keep them with me instead of in my luggage since I'm always worried about luggage getting lost.

    38. I'm going with Batchix! I booked our hotel and everything. We're gonna stay a few extra days beforehand and go to some museums and do some fabric shopping.

    39. I’m planning on going, but I still need to buy tickets. I’m looking forward to the convention! :celebrate

    40. So excited to go to a doll con! I've got my ticket and my flights booked, all I need to do is finalize hotel plans!
I need to narrow down what dolls I want to bring. What a decision!!!

    41. I have a friend who is interested in attending but cannot commit to the date until after January, so she may have to miss out if tickets sell out before then- however, do cons like this typically have informal doll meets after? I know Dolpa sometimes does (non-official meets for non Volks dolls etc) so while I imagine it's too early to plan right now, I figured it's worth mentioning that we'd be interested in something like that, even if we both manage to make it to the con itself (for me it's a given though)! Like in general we would love hanging out with more doll people, especially since the con ends at 4pm on Sunday- that gives a whole evening, at least for folks who aren't too exhausted by the con itself.

(I don't mean to hijack this thread for meetup planning or anything, I can do that elsewhere if needed, just expressing interest while being excited for the doll con itself!!)

    42. I'm looking forward to it very much.
      See you there!!

      • x 6
    43. Really hope my brother and I can make it, it'd be so exciting to see everyone and their dolls :') I just have to decide what dolls to bring ahhhhh

    44. Booked my AirBnB and flight over Black Friday. :D Happy to have everything good to go. Now to pick my travel buddy.

    45. I am little hesitant since this is the first ever doll convention I would have attended. I don’t have any experience with any doll conventions and want to know if I should attend some of the other more well known conventions because I been to a few first conventions and they weren’t that great. Plus NY is not cheap or the safest state. I am disabled so I like to know my safety is taken into account plus because of it I am forced to pay higher prices for my needed accommodations.

    46. Your best bet might be to reach out directly to the con staff at [email protected] and ask. This con isn't like any other I've been to where the event venue is in a hotel/convention center. The event space is here: https://www.100suttonstudios.com/ and it might also be worth it to reach out to them to ask about accessibility in their building since they'll have more exact answers regarding the physical space.

    47. I haven't been to a con before, so I've been what is the best way to plan to pay for things at a con? Like is it better to have cash on hand, or do vendors generally have a way to accept card payments?

    48. IMO it’s always good to have cash on you, but at conventions I’ve been to, most vendors do have card readers!

    49. We can definitely check anything you might need specifically as far as aisle widths for mobility aids, etc! 100 Sutton is an ADA-accessible venue with an elevator that we're reserving for the use of those who need it so that it's available.

NYC is pretty great as far as curb cuts, and the bus that stops about a block before the space and goes by most of the hotels we have on our list is accessible for wheelchairs, has reserved disability seating, etc. The city could be better with subway stations having elevators, but they do clearly mark which of them have elevators or if the elevators are off for maintenance/repair.

As far as safety, I do think the narrative the rest of the world hears can be a bit overdone. Crime per capita is pretty low, and you do hear about the occasional incidents on the news because it's crowded and people see everything. I don't suggest waving large sums of cash around after midnight in a subway car or anything else silly like that. The neighborhood the venue is in is mostly residential and quiet.

We will have card readers for concessions/raffle etc as staff, and we can't speak for vendors (most that I'm aware of will be taking cash plus at least paypal/square/cash app/zelle/whatever), but cash is always king.

    50. How exciting! There hasn’t been a doll con in NYC in years! I’m super excited.

      • x 1
    51. Does anyone know if there's a schedule or what any of the panels are? I haven't been able to find information on either.

      • x 2
    52. We're still in the process of finalizing our schedule but should have that out within the next month or so.

      • x 3
    53. Have emails gone out to volunteers yet regarding when they should arrive and such?

    54. I bought my tickets, and am super excited to go! :)

      • x 3
    55. I know the raffles will be drawn on Sunday, but do you have an idea of if that will be earlier in the day or later? I'm trying to figure out the schedule for my bus tickets into/ out of the city for the weekend :3

    56. Towards the end of our day on Sunday!

      • x 1
    57. Good to know, thanks!

    58. This will be my first time vending at a doll convention. I'm super excited to meet everyone:XD:

    59. I'm new to using Instagram, so I just looked at the NYC Doll Convention page the other day, and am even more excited seeing more of the vendors who will be there.

Of course I'm also super excited to go to a convention full of BJD people! I haven't even been to a meet-up for several years.

    60. Is anybody seeking a solo traveler to split costs with? My accommodations have fallen through and I'm trying to make other plans for the weekend. Transportation to the area and convention ticket confirmed, just need to make new nighttime arrangements. :...(
(Alternatively, if any locals advise against walking the less than 2 miles from the Moore youth hostel to 100 Sutton please let me know lmfao... never been to Brooklyn, but I'm a park ranger so a 1.7 mile walk at the beginning and end of the day sounds lovely honestly)

EDIT: Booked at the Moore, keeping an eye on the weather as we get closer to con weekend!!)
