Nuther Head

Apr 5, 2013

    1. Hm, I work (a little over 7cm) X (5cm). Maybe I will try 10mm eyes again!

Though, 9mm is the one I'm most curious about now, but it's not a size in the bjd hobby, I think. I am aware though that w/in a eye size there's a lot of variation with iris size and it's usually the iris size that determines the look of the eye, but I'm sculpting now and I'm trying to look for...a curvature of the eyeball, if that makes sense? Oh well, I'll go find me some ball bearings, I guess.

    3. Oh my god, oh mygod, ohmy god! They are perfect! I also love all your feline references. I just wish I still had my kittycat to mess with all the doll parts :-(
Sorry, if I missed the explanation somewhere, but what are the tiny kitty heads for?

    4. Thanks for the kind words, nia2010!!

I can't go on without ma kitties. You should adopt one or two if you can. I am feel very lucky to have them in my life.
Oh, I am primarily a cat sculptor. So I have been trying to put cat heads on everything.

    5. Cats and head sculpts, together at last! :D No, seriously. If I get even half as good as you at catching details while sculpting, I'm more than happy. ;) Got to love these heads. You've made quite a few heads now, haven't you?

    6. Thanks for the compliment, Daiin Yes, I have made a few. None of them is properly casted, though. Maybe in a few month...

I put some more time to it.

    7. Excellent. You have just the right sort of.... determined set to the jaw, too. May need to get a bit thicker on the brow ridgeyness, but coming along very well. :D

    8. Who is this handsome head modeled after? ;)

    9. Hey good to hear from you, HystericalParoxysm! How is your studio coming long? I assume you are pretty busy.
He sure got thick supraorbital. I put more wax on that part.

Hi Miss_Pygmalion! I am still toying the idea of sculpting one of Christophers you have suggested. This guy's name isn't Chris, unfortunately. Haha.

    10. Put brows and eyes for reference. More to go. I want to shave the actor's head so that I have reference on his skull.

    11. Did more to it over this weekend. Not quite there yet.

    12. not sure what the hell you on about! =p

he is fantastic, can't even say what my favourate part of his face is because all of him is just perfect.

how long has he taken so far do you recon?

    13. Appreciate the compliment, JetPackJumper! There are some parts that I am not sure about since this guy has never had his hair short. This sculpt will look better with tons of hair on it, I bet....Gotta git rid of some asymmetries and what not. I still have to hollow him out and work on fittings...

    14. Oh my gosh..I was thinking a few days ago that if I ever were to sculpt a face based on a real person it would be Mads..just because he's so interesting looking. Then I was scrolling through this thread and instantly recognized him before reading the comments XD You did an amazing job, it looks PERFECT. The other heads are all amazing too.

    15. Thanks for the compliment licorice-embryo.
You should go ahead sculpt his head as I would love to see your version of him.

    16. I quickly got tired of working on ma 1/4 guy. So went back to this guy. I hollowed out the head and fitted ball bearing to sculpt around the eyes.

The one thing I tried on this head is that I put mock hair to see where I was at. Since this actor has never worn his hair short I was not sure how I was doing. I can see where I can adjust on this piece after the mock hair. I should employ this method from now on...

    17. I think I am done with this guy....

Thanks for looking... Now I have to work on ma 1/4 guy

    18. Amazing work you do!!

    19. Guess what.
      Mads finally got casted
      [IMG]

    20. Woah! That's so cool!

    21. Thanks InNoTeb! Hopefully I can recover the cost and cast nuther head:)

    22. We got Murph casted finally. I have reworked many many many times as people around me thought lacking something. Let me tell you I have no desire to look at his face no more....
The good news is that we found a local casting guys who are very reasonable so we can lower the price. The bad part is that they have no idea what doll head cast needs to be so requires bit supervising. But I can go vist them in 10 minutes unlike casters at overseas so it is not so bad.
      Anyway this the the result.

      Thanks for looking.

And if you guys want to throw suggestions on next head sculpt, please feel free to do so. Thank!

    23. This is an amazing head sculpt! I have just discovered your work on DA yesterday and I am very impressed. I don't think I've ever seen a doll head with such realistic textures. (Only the face-upartist in me wants to cry a little cos this head doesn't leave much work to do for me โ€ฆ ;) )

    24. All your faces are mindblowingly amazing!!! I went through the whole thread, gasping. I want to see more of your fantastic sculpting!!

    25. Thanks fot the comliment, eviessanctum and Berrysdoll !!

eviessanctum Hehe thanks. I am sure that you can do face up that make him look very alive. To tell you the truth, no one has done any face ups on our doll heads so I am itchuing to know how the texture gonna do with face ups.

Berrysdoll- Appreciate the kind words, but I am sure I can be better. Glad you enjoyed the whole thread. Haha. Oh you are in Japan? I am from Hokkaido.

    26. If I was in your country, I'd paint your guy for free. :) I am also very curious to see how he looks with a face-up.

    27. That is very sweet of ya. We are actually looking for face-up artists for our heads.

    28. Finally got Fass Head casted and ready to go. It has been althered quite bit since the last picture.

    29. Also put ma feet into the world of face up. Dicked around for 3 days. Not quite there but figured I would share here.

    35. I am pretty much done. " It is not done till you mold it."

    36. that's really impressive! will you be taking the eyes out before you cast it?

    37. Thanks for the compliment. Yeah. It is hollowed out so look like this now. I can still alter the face, though.

    38. That is some amazingly detailed work right here. O.o; All the lines on the face, and I'm ridigilously impressed by those ears! o_o Amazing.

    39. Wow. Beautiful work!

    40. Thanks for the kind words, Tiirikka and SilverAsh! I still got to clean inside bunch more. Hopefully I can get this produced real soon.

    41. He's awesome. And I know the hair was just for fun, but I loved it. You could totally make sculpted wigs for dolls. It's really, really hard to find short hairstyles for male dolls. I know that I have several guys in my crew for which I would LOVE to get a wig like that. There have been doll companies in the past that have made removable resin wigs for some of their dolls. The problem is that they have to be fit to the specific doll (often they're an alternate head cap) and/or cast in a more flexible material.

This line had flexible "wigs" (they weren't exactly hair, but the concept is the same), and they can be worn by any of the dolls in this size by this company (they're cast in rubber), so they're not mold-specific: http://iplehouse.com/home/shop/list.php?ca_id=1040&nhn1=en

This doll had a resin headcap wig: http://dec66292.dreamweb.co.kr/shop/step1.php?number=627

    42. Hey Thanks for the compliment and input, Kiyakotari. Means a lot coming from you. Yeah more than a few folks told me to keep the hair and toyed with the idea but like you said, the wig will not fit on other head and can't really justify the cost of molding, especially when the head is selling just enough to barely break even.

Thanks for the link of flexible wig/head cap. I am guessing iplehouse stopped selling them because the rubber they used did not withstand extended use? I must say the head-cap/resin-wig that Elfdoll did is a cool idea. I might consider in the future. Also looking into flexible polyurethane resin...

    43. Oh, no, the rubber wigs do withstand extended use, at least with whatever rubber Iplehouse used to make them! I have one myself (the awesome mushroom cap wig) and it's quite sturdy. They were part of limited edition doll fullsets, which is why they're no longer available from Iplehouse. I'm guessing that silicone wouldn't hold up as well, but the stuff they used is quite strong. I think it might be somewhat similar to the injection-molded flexible rubber used in some fashion doll lines, for the heads? Or like what is used for the "soft" parts of Dollfie Dreams, like the busts?

I've heard interesting things about flexible polyurethane resins, though I've never gotten to play with them myself. They seem fascinating! And I know that feralworks is using some flexible foam for some masks, though that seems to have a lot of bubbling problems.

    44. Thanks for the info, Kiyakotari I appreciate your knowledge.

I wonder what kinda material they actually used. Some action figures used some kind of flexible materials and many of those parts tend to crack after some years of use or getting brittle. I am not familiar with dolls at all so have no idea what the "soft" parts of Dollfie Dreams were like. I would not mind producing sculpted wigs if we can run a small numbers of them and would not cost too much like making injection molds and of course there are some demand for it.

    45. Came across this thread again and literally started drooling Awesome work man. If you don't mind my asking, How did you get the wax so smooth?

    46. Thanks for the compliment Poochbot.

I actually have been told my works are not smooth enough many occasions so I am not the person to ask when it comes to cleaning up the wax surface. Just letting you know.

I mostly sand the wax with #220-#400 grit sand paper. Sometimes I freeze the piece so that it will be easier to sand (not getting too sticky) I hear some sculptors polish their work with a piece of pantyhose. I have never developed the taste for wearing ones so I don't use the method. Some use chemicals likes of Goo Gone, but it just makes the surface soft and messy in my opinion so I don't do often either. So mostly, sand papers, and going through the surface with loop tools.

    47. Wow really? :D They look pretty smooth to me. They have this almost flesh like quality. Almost like the have pores. Thanks for the tips. I have a crap load of castilene wax just sitting in storage. Don't know what the hell to do with it yet.

    48. The texture was put with texture pads. It is common practice in action figure world. I like them but I got complains about the texture on doll heads. One lady bashed me about that once. I guess it is hard to put traditional faceup. This new one will have almost no texture when it cast as it is sort of a group order. How much is crap load? If they are produced before 2004, I will buy some from you.:D I miss old castilene.....

    49. A great way to use a junk cast. made this as a birthday gift for a Hannibal fan

    50. Holy crap, that's uncanny. I love everything about it!

    51. Thanks chobi! I used air dry stone clay for its hair and the neck. I hate using those clay now.

    52. Got Head sculpt commission. Supposed to go on a 54cm tall doll. I started on it today...

I put wooden ball inside as usual.

    55. Thanks bebidolls!!
I had to take off texture since no face-up artists like those.

Put mock hair for the client. Also she did not like the skin tag besides his nose(the actual person has one) so I removed it.

After more work, I cut it in half started to hollow it out.
