Normal BJD things you've never done

Jan 2, 2025

    1. Apologies if a similar thread already exists, but a quick search didn't bring up the question I had in mind.
What are some normal, perhaps mundane hobby activities you've never done? Firsts you've never had in the hobby? Skills you've never gotten around to practicing? And, in the spirit of the new year: are you planning to change this?

I'm over halfway to a decade in this hobby, and I've never:
      - done a proper faceup
      - restrung a doll (floppy SD10 suwarikko sulks in the corner...)
      - purchased a doll on layaway
      - made a hybrid
      - sueded or wired a doll
      - sewn an outfit (or anything other than an ugly, ill-fitting skirt)
      - made a wig or eyes

I know the last couple aren't an "everyone has done this" kind of thing, but I think this thread would die too quickly if it's overly strict... and I do plan to change most of these! I'm still not interested in sueding or wiring, but I have several dolls overdue for restringing. I also hope to grab some blank heads and start learning faceups.... eventually. And there's a pile of practice fabric sitting in my room, waiting for me to sew... Anyway.

So what have you guys not done during your time in the hobby?^^

    2. Does not having bought a doll count lol? I know that means I’m not technically “in the hobby” yet, but I’ve been lurking around for a bit now. And that definitely sets me apart from most of the other people here.

    3. 2025 is my 12th year in the hobby and I have never ever:
      • done a proper faceup - I did blushing, nails but not the face and I don't have any plans to change it;
      • restrung a doll - all my dolls are strung by my friend, and when they strung good to my taste I barely can change their heads. I just don't have enough strength to do it;
      • purchased a doll on layaway - it may sound strange but nah, I didn't do it so far, but won't say it won't be changed.
      • I never dyed my dolls - I didn't have such necessity
      • I never tried to make eyes. In general crafting is not my thing, I'd say it is the least interesting thing to me though I tried making wigs, outfits, shoes etc.

    4. The only skill I would consider really getting into is possibly doll knitting but I'm not really a pattern creator. I can in a pinch do very minimal wig styling but not much and I'm not *that* interested

    5. My favourite part of the hobby is to be crafty and creative but I haven't done the following:

I never did eyes for my dolls. Nor I have the intention of.
I have never drawn my dolls (I am an illustrator and did concept art too). I feel I can explore my characters better using BJDs than drawing them.
I have never tried making shoes. Just the thought makes me nervous.
I have never sanded a doll, even though I suspect one I have needs to be sanded.
I have never participated in events. I can never find anything to join in time.
I have never done a swap.
I have never paid via layaway. (Kinda? A person of my part purchased me an expensive doll using layaway that I ended up paying myself lol but that's another nightmare story). I prefer saving money little by little if I can.

That's what I have on top of my head

    6. I've never bought a doll on a layaway, neither have I bought a full doll new. The former I definitely don't plan to change, the latter... hopefully not this year but we'll see how it goes.

I'll never say never to crafts but I've never managed to dye a doll - this I do hope to gather courage for this year!

I've also never attended a meetup, but I prefer to tinker on my dolls by myself anyway so I don't feel like I'm missing out on a lot. Maybe if stars align, though?

    7. This June I will have been in the hobby 18 years and I still feel like a newbie if truth be told. There are so many levels to it.

I’ve never properly restrung a doll. I say ‘properly’ as I did take apart a 1/12 simply designed tiny to try and body blush her then attempted to very badly put her back together. I don’t really count that as it was a very long time ago and not very complex even so it did put me off trying to ever restring anything else, I’ve been scared of it since!

I’ve never dyed a doll as it scares the bejesus out of me. I also have the excuse of allergies and pets to further help me avoid it!

I’ve never sanded a doll or made any modifications to one, too scared!

I’ve never commissioned a faceup, prefer to do them myself even if I do always make annoying mistakes and constantly mess up brows and lashes. That may change though as my older person eyesight changes are beginning to really frustrate me.

I’ve never attended a meet or convention mainly because of where I live but also because I have severe social anxiety. I have tickets to attend one this year (UK) and hoping I won’t talk myself out of it!

I’ve never made any proper attempt to sew for my dolls and this is something I really, really need to learn to do. Same goes for wigs!

Like @Thanato-Cat despite being artistic I’ve never drawn my own dolls. I did years ago do a series of digital paintings of Tinybear/SleepingElf’s dolls as a way of helping her sell them. The paintings were kind of imaginings of how they could look, done using photos of the blanks as reference. Never done anything with my own dolls though.

Until recently I also never bothered with any back stories for any, the thought didn’t cross my mind. Yes they had personality and character but that was it, in fact (no offence intended to anyone) I had always thought the fact others had elaborate stories made up for theirs quite amusing. I don’t know why that changed but it did a few years ago.

    8. Oh what a fun thread! It's interesting to consider what I haven't tried but wish to attempt, maybe cross some of these off this year?

Making eyes is probably one of the last crafty things I've never tried.

Modification is scary, so I've never dyed or made permanent modification to a doll

Never purchased a second hand doll ( okay my first one is on lay-away right now and my collection is small).
Never purchased a Full-set, because customization is the best part of the hobby for me.
Never used a Dealer to buy a doll, I tend to just order direct from companies.

These were the mundane things that stood out for me, Going to try some modification stuff this year tho.

    9. - I've never dyed a doll and most likely never will. I've thought about doing it in the past but every time I think about it and look up the info again the process puts me off.
      - I've never done extreme modifications to a doll and doubt very much I'll ever do.
      - I've never made eyes and sometimes I've thought about trying to make resin eyes but I don't know if I would use them ultimately since my preferred type of eyes are glass because they're long lasting (and I won't try making glass ones because I don't even know how or where I would go to try that).
      - I've never bought a full set doll and I'll never will because I enjoy the process of customising.
      - I've never made a bjd myself, although it's something I'd very much like to try at some point but not something I specifically plan this year.

This is all that comes to mind right now, I might edit if I remember anything else.

    10. As of... maybe today? I'd have to check exactly what day Crow showed up, but I've been in the hobby for 13 years. I started out with an old, broken doll that needed cleaning, repairing, modding, and re-painting, and my second doll was a hybrid. Suffice to say I have done a lot. :XD:

      But never have I ever:

      - done a faceup myself (I always commission, and don't plan to change it)
      - made shoes (just don't know how, and it doesn't interest me at the moment)
      - made eyes (I may change this in the future, I've done resin casting and detail painting)
      - done a trade by mail (I have done them in person at meetups, though; I'm too paranoid to do it the other way)

... And that's all I can think of.

    11. In the twenty plus years I've known of these dolls, I feel like I've done a lot of the customization aspects, including heavy additive mods. Never dyed any of my dolls but I don't feel I need/want to. I've also made wigs, clothes, and even attempted making shoes, although I suck at all those.

I've never done any of the socializing, as I am a weirdo and a huge old gemaphobe. So, I don't believe I'll ever try any meets, or in person events.

I've never wired or sueded my dolls as far as customizing goes, but I might try those this year.

I've never made eyes either, because I know I can't learn glass-making/blowing (locally) and, not have that be unnecessarily expensive. It has also stopped me thinking the only other alternative is resin. However, I might try if I can avoid resin at all!

I've also never done layaway, as a weirdo, having debt scares me to death. So, I know I won't try that either.

As a traditional artist, I've never felt the need to render my dolls in traditional mediums but I don't know how mundane that is. For most people who own BJD, to have a traditional art background, I mean. Probably more common than being any other type of artist, I am guessing. (:

    12. I've been in the hobby....geez, ten years already? But like several others in this thread, still feel like a newbie in a lot of ways! I've never:
      • Sueded or wired a doll; only recently have I even used kips!
      • Made shoes, that seems waaaay too hard.
      • Participated in a group order. I don't know how common those are anymore, but they intimidate me a bit.
      • Gone to a meetup or doll-focused event.
      • Done additive mods. My sculpting skills are still pretty....ehh.
      • Dyed a doll. Does a picconeemo count?
      • Taken a photoshoot outside my house. Traveling is pretty difficult for me even without a doll to lug around.

      • x 2
    13. I started the hobby pre denofangels, so....23 years maybe?

      This will be tricky!

Never dressed a boy BJD in leather or pleather
Never had a 70cm or taller doll

Things I wish I could say never to:
      Never had a doll stolen
Never had person B give me bad feedback because I sold a damaged doll very cheaply to person A, who then charged person B full market value, and somehow that was my fault...

      • x 4
    14. I have been in the hobby for 18 years now.
Never have I done a face up.
Never have I done any body blushing, took a lesson at a convention, but never had the guts to try.
Never made a wig or eyes, feel to many talented people to even try.
That's pretty much it. I have been lucky with meet ups every year except when Covid was more scary. Went to Dolpha when it waz in Buffalo NY.
Have made clothes not great but functional.
Done layaway, swaps and half of each.
Traveled with a doll to both very public and not so public places.
Best of all I have made real lasting friends in this hobby something I never was able to do in at hobby before.

      • x 3
    15. I have been in the hobby 14 years and have never been to a doll convention nor have I ever ordered a full set. It seems unlikely I will ever do either but never say never I suppose!

      • x 2
    16. I regret a bit that I never went through with the various hybrid ideas I had... Zhu Hong spider-lady, I'll always miss you. I think it's just too much of a headache.

      • x 1
    17. It's been over 10 years since I've joined the hobby and I've realized I've done a lot.

      Never have I...

      • Made shoes
      • Dyed a doll
      • Made resin eyes (I've made polymer clay ones)
      • Gone to a meet up (I have been lucky enough to attend a convention though)
      • Participate in a group order
      • Made permanent modifications to a doll
      • Completed a room box (they're always in progress)
      • Commissioned a face up
My goals for this year; complete a diorama, make shoes and try making some resin eyes! Dying and modifications are definitely a 'depends on the doll' sort of thing but I plan on trying it when that happens!

I think the greatest thing about trying all of these different things in the hobby is that you learn pretty quick what works for you and what doesn't. Like wig making for me, it was difficult and I did not enjoy the process or the results. Now I know to just buy/commission wigs and focus on other areas of the hobby that I enjoy.

      • x 1
    18. I'm still waiting for someone to post something I haven't done... I haven't dyed a doll but I also don't consider that a normal BJD activity. I'm starting to think I've done it all... :?

      • x 5
    19. There are many things (a lot more, probably):
      • Never did a face up or body blushing.
      • Never commissioned a face up.
      • Never made shoes.
      • Never restrung a doll.
      • Never tried making own wigs or eyes.
      • Never purchased a full set.
      • Never went to a convention or meet up.
      • Never done sanding.
      • Never dyed a doll.
I plan to try doing my own face ups, shoes and wigs at some point in the future.
Also restringing a doll as maintenance is something that I definitely want to learn as well.

    20. Interesting thread! I've been in the hobby over 11 years and the things I've never done are-
      • Commissioned a face-up. I'm determined to paint my blank dolls myself.
      • Made a wig. Not interested in learning
      • Made eyes. Not interested in trying, there are so many great options on the market anyway
      • Bought a doll on layaway. I'm just not comfortable with it.
      • Done permanent mods other than sanding

    21. I've never dropped an obscene amount of $$$ on a doll or an outfit or whatever. Even when I had normally higher end dolls I put them together made hybrids from mostly used parts to get them under budget.

My budget on dolls has gone up a little because like everything else the cost of doll stuff has gone way up since I was collecting last time. Out of necessity I took a good few years off and when I came back I got sticker shock just looking at doll accessories.

A lot of my doll stuff got stolen including my best dolls and I couldn't even deal. I barely came here. I couldn't look at doll stuff. I didn't have the $$$ to replace any of it. I didn't even have a roof over my head for nearly six years. Buying dolls and doll stuff wasn't even an option.

I have a few dolls now and I've managed to get clothes on most of them. Some are still works in progress but that's okay. I do what I can as I can but just popping $100 or more for an outfit or spending $25 or more for shoes that just doesn't happen around here..

Unless I somehow get a lot more affluent than I am that's just how it is. It still pains me all the stuff I lost. I had 20 years worth of collecting doll stuff and not being able to use that stuff or replace it really makes me frustrated at times but it is what it is and given what all I went through I'm just grateful to be alive, securely housed and the owner of a few nice dolls again.

Not being able to buy my BJD dolls fancy shoes or outfits that's a minor annoyance by comparison...

    22. i've been in the hobby since 2013, and customization-wise, there isn't much of anything i haven't done with my dolls at this point. most of them are hybrids, i've modded, sanded, dyed, painted, sueded, restringing is often the first thing i do with a new doll, most of my dolls are wearing wigs and eyes and clothes that i made...

i do have a few nevers tho: never been to a meetup or a convention, never did a trade, never did a group order, never purchased a head to toe fullset with company faceup, wig, eyes, outfit and accessories all included.

in terms of crafting i think the only never i have is shoemaking, but i plan on doing that this year!

      • x 1
    23. This thread is making me realize I have done quite a bit—faceups, wigs, sewing, shoe making, dyed dolls, sanded dolls, opened dolls’ eyes, closed them, modded expensive limiteds, taken off artists faceups, sueding in several mediums, wiring, gone to (and hosted) meetups, &etc.

I think about the only thing people have mentioned that I haven’t done is make eyes. I have all the stuff for it, I just keep getting distracted with other things. :XD:

    24. I've never bought a doll on actual layaway. I phrase it like that, because I have put a doll on layaway for week to have the dealer hold an instock doll for me, or to take advantage of a sale. I always pay it off in a few days.

I've never made resin eyes. They do have these empty eyes that you can fill something or paint how you want it to look, but I have never made actual doll eyes. I don't think I ever will as I have a ton of eyes already laying around.

I've never dyed a doll. I don't have any that need it. I suppose if I ever got a really yellow or stained doll I would try it.

I've never successfully made doll shoes. I did try my hand at some slippers, but they didn't come out right. I just don't have the talent for cobbling.

I've never been to a doll meet or doll convention. My state (Florida) has quite a few meet ups but they are close to 100 miles away from me, so if would take about two hours for me just to get there.

I've never made a good wig. I did try when I first started collecting but it just doesn't feel like a proper wig for me to glue hair wefts to a cap, and I have never tried to sew hair on to a cloth wig cap. I've tried to make a few fur wigs as well, but I always get the pattern wrong. So, no wig making for me.

I've never done a group order, and I never will. It just feels risky to me, and I can be paranoid.

I've never commissioned a faceup, I do my own.

I never sold a doll, I have no intention of selling any of my dolls.

I thought I did a lot of stuff. But I did experiment enough to know things I am not good at doing.

    25. I've been in the hobby for almost 19 years, and I've never bought a doll on layaway. I prefer saving up, then buying a doll.

I've also never bought a 70cm+ doll, or a musclebound male body. Neither of those appeal to me.

      • x 1
    26. For around 3 years, I've never done most things in the list. I've customised several wigs, and unstrung and restrung certain dolls to get the aluminium out, and that's all. But I don't think I miss a lot part of playing with dolls.

You are really resolved !!!!! I only do layaway for preorder doll with long waiting time.

    27. I never modded, dyed or sanded a doll, I'm too scared of messing it up and regretting it. :( I also haven't ever sewn because it seems super hard. I have made wigs, eyes and faceups but the rest is too scary for me.

    28. It's been almost 17 years since I got my first doll, and was interested in the hobby for several years before that. I'm very hands on, so there's not a lot I haven't attempted. So these things might not be all that "normal" but enough people do it that I'm counting it:

-Been part of a lottery/been to a Dolpa
-Sculpted a doll body (I have tried to sculpt a head more than once and it's not pretty.)
-Designed and 3D printed anything (I've seen a lot of people creating not just doll parts, but also props, shoes and more.)
-Made a Youtube video about dolls/box opening

    29. Been in hobby for almost 21 years....

      -I haven't made eyes
-haven't bought a BJD on layaway.
-3D printed anything for a doll.
-Done body blushing (I am counting elf ears in with faceups which I have done) 'cause I'm not a fan

    30. I do layaway, I do crazy mods, I dye, I do faceups, wigs and eyes, I have a lot of different dolls, and a lot of repeat heads, because I’m like that, but there are a few things I’ve never done.

-I’ve never had an anime doll character (though I’ve bought bodies from anime dolls, and sold the heads)
-I’ve never kept a doll that never got a character (some have taken their time, or had characters switch, or they got sold)
-I’ve never been to a doll con (though resin rose is on my bucket list)
-I’ve never given a doll as a gift
-I’ve never received a doll as a gift (I was given one as payment for my assistance once though)
-I’ve never taken a doll with me on a trip, to a museum, theme park, event, etc
-I’ve never sculpted my own full doll
-I’ve never modded a head permanently
-I’ve never made a wig with Alpaca specifically
-I’ve never sewn my own doll clothes (this will have to change soon)
      -I’ve never taken faceup/wig/eye commissions
-I’ve—miraculously—never quite run out of space for dolls (but I’m close to running out now!)
-I’ve never paid F&F on PayPal to anyone I didn’t consider at least an acquaintance
-I’ve never spent more than $1200 on a single doll

    31. There are a lot of things on this thread I've never done.
The most common thing I don't do is that I do not travel with my dolls. They don't come on trips with me.
I also do not have stories for them - they do all have names, and some have a concept of a backstory, but that's all.

One thing I want to do is dye a body. I have a Soom Trachy in brick red, and although she does have brick red hands, the rest of her body is white skin. I'd really like to dye it. Right now her clothing hides the body, and I blushed her neck and wrists in case they peep out - but I figure that if she's all covered up like that, even if I botch the dye job she won't be worse off?

Another thing I want to do is try to improve my face-up skills. Now that all my dolls have face-ups, even if they're not all good, I feel that I could maybe just randomly take one or two of them and experiment with face-ups. I just need to practice!

      • x 3
    32. I’ve never sewed. Hot glueing is not sewing!
I've never dyed a doll. But I need this skill for the future!
I've never done additive mods. I should... But... Not now. :sweat

      • x 1
    33. I am going to be honest I don’t think I am even five proper years into the hobby. However, everything that I have not done I am honestly not going to do because I am not artistically inclined. I am a chemistry whiz. So I don’t plan ever doing a faceup, stringing a doll, sueding or wiring a doll, sewing an outfit other than to repair, or making a wig or eyes. I am too hard on myself trying to be a perfectionist.

      • x 2
    34. 15 years. Good grief.
I have done a lot. I've always felt comfortable taking all my dolls apart and adapting them and changing them, to the point of boiling hands to soften the resin enough to change the positioning of fingers :) I put my dolls through a lot :mwahaha They are there for me to have fun with and experiment with, so there.

      I never have:
Created a BJD from scratch ( I have made porcelain dolls, paper clay dolls, Marionettes, cloth dolls, but never a BJD)
Commissioned a face up - I am too particular about things, not necessarily a good thing. Also I don't trust the mail with a treasured head.
Attended a meet-up or any kind of doll event, I like to putter around in private I suppose.
      Sold a doll.
      Used lay away.
Made eyes. Made everything else but never eyes. I have 25 pairs laying around as it is, so not felt the need.

It's been fun, even the years when life was too hectic to have much time for them. Here's hoping that will change one day, in the meantime I will just have to grab the moments and spurts of energy that I can.

    35. Ooh this is an interesting question! I've technically been in the hobby for around nine years but only really super active in the last two. I've tried out a lot of customizing and crafting but there are still definitely some things I have yet to try! I have yet to...

      - Make a wig.
      - Make eyes.
      - Make shoes.
      - Do or have a doll with body blushing, besides hands.
      - Do any major sculptural mods (I've sanded dolls and done repairs with epoxy, but that's the extent of it).
      - Attend a local meetup (I have attended a non-local convention).
      - Do a swap/trade.
      - Commission a faceup (unless company faceups count).
      - Purchase a fullset.
      - Participate in a group order.

I really hope to get around to trying the crafting-related ones this year. I could give or take the rest of these things, except that I'd really love to go to a local meetup sometime. Hopefully by the end of the year this list is a little shorter. :)

    36. Things I haven't done yet in my almost 14 years in this hobby, but will probably do sooner or later:
-sculpted a part or a full doll
-dyed a part or a full doll
      -gone to a doll convention

Things I've never done and have no interest in doing:
      -bought a fullset
-commissioned an artist for a faceup, blushing, wig, clothes, shoes etc

    37. Been in the hobby...oh god is it really 18 years?! And I've never:

      - wired or sueded a doll
      - made eyes
      - made shoes
      - done permanent mods
      - been to a meetup (would love to, but I always seem to miss them!)
      - been part of a split

    38. 14 years in the hobby and there are a good bunch of things I've never done:
      - face-ups, mods, or dyes.
      - shoe or eye-making.
      - been part of a group order or asked for a split in a sales post.
      - used layaway.
      - bought a doll taller than 52cm or shorter than 20cm.

    39. I've been in the hobby since 2019 (so 6 or so years) and I think the most common/normal things I've never done are:
      - Restrung a doll (Idk why, it seems very scary to me X'D)
      - Been a part of a group order
      - Bought a fullset (all my dolls are pretty much second hand)
      - Used a layaway
      - Been to a BJD meetup

      • x 1
    40. Hmmm, things I have never done so far for bjd's:
      • Resin eyes - not willing
      • Shoes - teeny buckles are beyond me.
      • Wig making - I have done this outside of bjd and my god is it tedious for my brain.
      • Dye a doll - eep not brave enough.
      • Body mods like piercings or tattoos - thinking about it.
      • Used layaway - personal pref us to jyst buy it.
      • Attend in person meetup - none in area.
      • Been part of a split order - group project vibes.
      • Public photoshoot - I don't think my garden counts.
      • Travel via airplane with one - contemplating this as there is another enthusiast at an annual event I attend.

      • x 1
    41. 12 years in the hobby and I've never...
      - bought a doll second hand
      - sold a doll
      - bought a doll with a fullset
      - done an intentional hybrid (as in bought a head/body with the intention of pairing it up with another company's - I've only ended up with one as a happy accident)
      - commissioned a custom faceup
      - wired a doll
      - went to a meetup (zero interest though, am a hermit crab )

      • x 3
    42. I've not been in the hobby for very long yet, barely 3 years, so I don't know how much I "qualify" to post here, but:

      - never made eyes (but I am somewhat interested, even though I have enough)
      - never restrung a doll, I doubt I will ever have the courage for that ...
      - never dyed a doll
      - never made shoes
      - never made clothes, although that has been on my agenda since the beginning
      - never bought a doll on layaway, I prefer to pay in full
      - never been to a meet-up or doll convention, I very much would like to change that

    43. Ooh fun!
      Never have I ever!
I'm.... a semi-old-fart in this hobby, been around since 2009, and I've done a lot of stuff since I'm a crafty sort and that's how I enjoy the hobby.

I've never commissioned a freelancer faceup. I just kinda went for it with learning to paint my own. I HAVE had factory paint put on one or two dolls.
I've never used Layaway. Not that I can recall. Nothing wrong with it, I just prefer to do it the other way.
I... You know I don't think I have ever bought a doll as a Fullset. Ever! I have so much fun making my own doll stuff I tend to prefer that.

    44. I’ve never sent a head for a faceup because I was always a bit scared. But I’ve been thinking about it.

    45. Only been in the hobby for 2 1/2 year, so there is a lot I have not done:
      • A face up or body blushing. Hope to learn or at least try this summer
      • Commissioned a face up.
      • Made wig. eyes or shoes.
      • Never went to a convention or meet up. ( hopefully one day!)
      • Dyed, sued or sanded a doll. have thought about doing it on one doll, but keep chancing my mind...
      • Restrung a doll. it will come one day
      • Never have I taken my dolls out of the house.
      • Owning dolls over 68cm. They are not too heavy, but they take so much space!..
      • Taken photo series. Just have not gotten around to do it, maybe it will chance this summer
      • Sold a doll. so fare all dolls have stayed with me :)

    46. Two things I haven't done are go to a meet up or attend a convention. Maybe one day I will try going to Resin Rose or another doll convention in the future! :XD:

Edit: Other things I haven't done:
      • Dyed or modded a doll
      • Made any clothing
      • Created photostories
      • Made any doll props or furniture

    47. This is my third proper year of being in the hobby and I've never:
      • Made eyes, shoes or a wig (things I'd rather not craft)
      • Sueded or wired a doll (that's on the "to do list" for this year)
      • Gone to a doll-specific convention (none in my country)
      • Dyed a doll
      • Done subtractive mods
      • Spent over $100 USD on one doll outfit or accessory
I have done some more unusual things like taking dolls on international flights and 10km hikes.

    48. I am a terrible artist, so I've never done a proper faceup. I've done a couple of crappy ones, just to give whomever I choose to do faceups on my twins a basic idea of what I'd like done. Unfortunately for those poor dolls, I've not gotten around to actually sending them off to any spa.

I've also never made eyes, see the reason above.

I think I do have a couple of dolls that could use restringing. Its not that I hate doing so, I actually find it fun. Its like stringing beads. I've just not gotten around to doing it yet.

I think I may have found what to do for my New Years resolution. Faceups for the twins and restringing those that need it.
      Thanks!

Now to read what others have never done to their dolls. :XD:

Edit: After reading through this thread, I realized that there is a lot more that I've not done to My Crew in the 18 and a half years I've been in this hobby lifestyle.

      •Additive mods
      •made epoxy parts/had them made
      •made resin or 3D parts
•made a resin doll from scratch
•Dyed a doll (thinking about it though)
•made a Youtube, or any kind of video with them
•made shoes (I modified some though)
•made a diorama/room box, but I'm hoping to ne able to do so soon)
•opened nor closed eyes (but I had to bevel the inside of a head so the high domed eyes would fit better)
•knit any outfits (don't know how)
•sew machined any outfits (don't know how)

I have hand sewed many outfits and parts of outfits though. They may not be perfect, but I'm still proud that I am able to do so, especially with me having ADHD.

    49. I've looked at everyone's lists and it's interesting to see... at this point we could draw some statistics actually :)

So, the things I haven't done within the 13 years that I've been in the hobby are the following:

      -layaway
      -wiring a doll
      -making eyes
      -knitting and embroidery
      -dyeing a doll
      - commissioning a faceup
      - attending a convent
      - no fullsets
      - no extreme, additive mods, 'within-body' hybrids (e.g. legs and torso from different dolls, etc).
      - group order
      - owning an anthro doll
      - going beyond the typical sizes that you can easily find clothes for

Honestly, I have no desire to challenge any of the above either aisde from a cool dolly convent perhaps :)

    50. Gosh I really feel like I have done almost everything, it's crazy :sweat
It's hard for me to feel like dying a doll is a "normal" part of the hobby but I guess it's become that way and that's cool! But no, I haven't done it and don't plan to. I think it would bring out my fussiness way too much even if I would love to have more dolls that aren't all the same old color.
Dying adjacent I've also never even cared to try to de-yellow a doll in any way. I just roll with their aging process for better or for worse.
Knitting and crochet seem very popular and I love these types of things for dolls, but I've never attempted to learn it and don't plan to as of yet. I just like to look at it and have some pieces I find at times.

    51. I'm just two years in but I never sold a doll and I know I never will. I've never done a faceup either, but that might change in the future.

    52. It's been nearly 10 1/2 years since I bought my first doll, and February 2026 will be my 10th anniversary here on DOA.

      I've never:
      1. Done a proper face-up or body blushing
      (I don't think I'll ever do face-ups. It's not my foretay.)
      2. Purchase a doll on layaway
(I'm considering on doing that this year, but no promises.)
      3. Sueded, modded, or wired a doll
      4. Sew an outfit
(I've sewn a few pieces of clothing, but they didn't turn out great, so I guess that doesn't count)
      5. Made a wig or eyes
(I've never made either, but I have sewn a wig that was slightly too big for one of my dolls' heads.)

      • x 2
    53. I've never bought a resin fullset. (I have an OT fullset, but that doesn't count.)

      • x 3
    54. Have never and will never string a doll. I do not feel confident enough to do it. Thankfully my dolls haven't needed it yet.

      • x 2
    55. I have never:

      - Purchased anything on layaway
      - Made shoes, wigs, eyes
      - Bought a fullset
      - Owned a 1/3 or 1/6 size doll
      - Had to restring a doll (yet)
      - Done my own body blushing/body mods

I’m hoping to try a few of these soon!

    56. I think my biggest one is just not getting into floating heads. I need the space more than I need the head.

    57. I've never strung/restrung a doll! I want to learn how to 3D model dolls so it'll happen eventually :3

    58. Been in the hobby for 19 years and things I've never done are:
      • Additive mods
      • made epoxy parts/had them made
      • made resin or 3D parts
      • made a doll from scratch
      • Dyed a doll
      • made a Youtube, or any kind of video with them
      • made shoes
      • made a diorama/room box
      • opened nor closed eyes
      • knit any outfits
      • made eyes
      • been to a doll convention
      • sold a doll
      • commissioned a face-up
      • wired or sued a doll
      • Traded or swapped a doll
      • reshaped resin with heat

      • x 2
    59. I've been officially in the hobby for 18 years this year but have been interested and involved before then. I believe I've done all these besides dying a doll or making my own eyes. I did try to de-yellow a French resin Narae once and the process was a full body sanding and a process similar to dying. I did a boil bath with a light purple fabric dye diluted in hot water and some oxyclean. Plot twist, it didn't do much for the yellowing in this case. Lol
