Non-traditional Sculpting Contest Dollmakers sculpt in a wide variety of mediums. Some people use air dry paper or stone clay, some use polymer clay, and some use 3D modelling programs to sculpt digitally. One great thing about sculpting is, most materials are inexpensive and readily available! You can get air dry clay for a few dollars from a craft store, and there are free 3D modelling programs available to download. There are many recipes online for air dry clay made with flour and glue, and depending on where you live, you can even find clay in your own back yard! This makes it super-easy for anyone to give sculpting a try! For this special contest, sculptors (beginner and expert alike) will be sculpting competing works. You will be sculpting a (rough) doll head or bust, in your choice of style and size. The mod team will vote on our favorite entry to win. The mod team has also chosen a mandatory materials requirement as an added challenge for all entrants. And what sculpting medium will you need to use for this challenge? Mashed Potatoes! Sculptors will be competing for the prize of.... Blank Qingwu head in NS from Conarium (courtesy of STACY) Rules Your entry must be your own creation. Your sculpture must be made specifically for this contest. You must use only mashed potatoes as your base materials. You may make your own mashed potatoes from scratch, or you may use a box of instant mashed potatoes. Any flavor is acceptable, sculptor's choice! You may only submit one entry. Your sculpture may be a head, or a bust-type sculpture. The sculpture should consist primarily of mashed potatoes, though you may add a small percentage of other food ingredients if desired -- ie spices for coloring, fresh herbs or vegetables for accents, starches or cheese as a thickening agent, milk or butter as a thinning agent, etc. But remember! It is not nice to waste food, so consider making sure that your creation tastes good, so that you can serve it with dinner! All entries must meet the general anniversary contest rules and eligibility requirements. How to Enter Post your entry in this thread. Only post contest entries – chat, questions or comments will be removed. Describe your inspiration. Did you try to emulate a famous sculpture? Or make an original character? There must be an image with your entry. You are allowed to add a link to a full size image if you wish, but the entry must have an image shown in the thread. Our winner will be selected by the Den of Angels staff. DoA staff may enter for fun but may not win the prize. Important Dates Deadline for entries: August 24th, 11:59pm EDT If you have any questions about the contest, post in Ask the Moderators.
As stated "you may use a box of instant mashed potatoes." AKA powdered mash potato This contest blows my mind. Does the entry need to be human?
Now this sounds fun. So it has to be specifically mashed potatoes? No carved, uncooked potatoes allowed?
@iamkathybrown yes, powdered mashed potatoes (aka instant) are allowed. @Mechakal it does not need to be human, it can be an animal/anthro head, or fantasy creature. @Cap'n The rules are very clear that only mashed potatoes are allowed.
Describe your Inspiration: It's actually a really funny story, I had started to sculpt a chest and torso, it was looking alright, thinking I might attempt a Venus de Milo or Medusa. When I started on the head, it became too heavy so I decided to go with just a head. So, this guy has a 60's flair, Peace-out hippie vibe going. I sculpted a side-ways heart, a peace sign, and his hand giving a peace sign. I used a ziplock to create his squiggly hair. He has also has glasses on. He is my own creation, let's call him... Otto. There must be an image with your entry:
@Atomiczombiephd any additives must be food based. @Mechakal thank you for asking, food coloring is not allowed. We would like to be able to easily tell that it is mashed potatoes.
My inspiration: When I saw we were actually being encouraged to play with our food, mashed potatoes no less, my first thought was the scene in A Christmas Story where Randy is playing with his food and his mom asks him to show her how the piggy eats. So, I chose to make a piggy anthro sculpt! He is made entirely from instant mashed potatoes with black olives for eyes. Presenting: Randy Snorton! Bonus photos: A butter toupee and gouged eyes as he gets ready for dinner. This project is over, what a headache. I'm entering just for fun, may the prize go to someone who prefers 1/4 scale more than I do!
Ha. This made me giggle and grab the expired mashed potato box that I was going to toss out. At least I get to play with it! Since salt and spice were allowed... I put them to use too! Pink Himalayan salt for the pinkness of the skin tone, yellow curry salt for the hair. A bit of cumin for the eye shadows and pepper for the lashes, the hamburger spices for the lips. It didn't take much for the color to come through. My Inspiration: I thought of trying a head with a bust and ended up summoning the fairy of mashed potato. He's quiet annoyed because he has to come forth in a crumbing potato flakes. Here's Pouré Patátas, the fairy of mashed potato. Mashed Potato fairy.
Should we enter just a single angle shot or can we put two pictures together to show two different angles?
I present to you Elphihas, the elven blacksmith. I imagine him to be a friendly face for travelers, helping them rest and prepare to continue their journey. I am really fond of his strong nose >w< 3 potato by albino raven child, on Flickr
This is an amazing and hilarious challenge! I don't plan on entering, but I'm really enjoying the entries.
Inspiration: I've been viewing a lot of weird things on YouTube lately while I work on ventilating a wig for one of my dolls. Things like "Do Aliens Really Exist: EVIDENCE" and things like that just to have something boring in the background while I work. So of course, I went with an alien sculpt. I figured since she's a mashed potato alien, it would be fun if she was a plant-based lifeform so I used five bay leaves and a couple of green onions to accentuate that fact. I also used a few other spices to give her a face-up and fill out her hairline. Potato Alien by Debbie, on Flickr
I am loving all these entries so very much, but the green onion roots coming out of the eyes just rescued a tough week for me. Thank you!
I had so much fun with this... lol I just got back from Resin Rose and still have Monster on the brain, hence was birthed Pomme de Terror - Indigenous to forested areas, but rarely seen, except when he comes to steal crops, often using his yellowed teeth to pull them from their dwelling. Materials: Instant mashed potatoes (Buttery selects flavored, in case you're curious), hard boiled egg, a single pea, pepper for freckles and bay leaves for... horns? Hair? No one has ever gotten close enough to know which!
It was so much fun! all morning I was sculpting in popatoes My sculpt is a nasty nasty witch, which tempts young men using the "beauty and young" spell. But, unfortunetly, her spell stopped working and her true face show up. I use only potatoes (with a little bit of butter and milk) and parsley for wreath. my inspiration was Donatella Versace

Inspiration: In keeping with the Delicate theme, my inspiration was the delicate features of the Good Folk. Here we have an elegant elven lady at the moment she drifts off into a sweet dream~ Ingredients: Instant mashed potatoes, sweet rice flour, egg substitute, water. Potatoes were a challenging & very fun medium to play with!
Describe your inspiration. A gentle, content smile, smiling closed eyes, a small nose, cute face. What does he dream about? To whom he smiles so gently? There must be an image with your entry. apotatoman Full size: apotatoman Head: 100% mashed potato, no additives. Coloring of eyes: ground peppers Coloring of mouth: tomato paste Hair: onions and red Bulgarian pepper. Process: from a potato to a gentle man. He was so cute, I almost ate him before finishing him. apotatoman 2 Full size: apotatoman 2
My inspiration: the head of Medusa - a character from Greek mythology - gentle and innocent while sleeping, deadly dangerous after waking up. To make the head I only used boiled and crushed potatoes.
Inspiration: I just really wanted to play with some mashed potatoes after seeing how much fun everyone was having here Potato by BabySnowBJD, on Flickr
I know I missed the deadline, but I'm competing for fun! Here is my mashed potato pukipuki! Mashed potato pukipuki by Skyealloway, on Flickr
@skyealloway The mod team is currently discussing all the entries now, so you can still enter for the prize if you would like!
The mod team finalized our discussion last night. We were thrilled with all of the entries for this contest! You all showed great style, creative use of materials, and great character backstories too! And the winner of this contest is... @Swampruler with their pepper-haired boy! (Please post a thread in Ask the Mods to claim your prize!) Thank you to everyone participated this year! We all had a great time reviewing your entries, and we hope you all enjoyed playing with your food!
Congrats @Swampruler! Never before has the lowly mashed potato been so much fun to look at - every entry made me smile!
Thank You everyone! I feel so honored to have won this contest! Thank you, DOA moderators, so much for this opportunity. It was so fun to sculpt using mashed potatoes. I will definitely use the skills, what I have learned in this contest, in the future. Thank you so much!
Congrats @Swampruler on the win! Your pepper hair was such a creative idea! Everyone did a good job, I loved seeing all the different ideas. I do want to call out @JessiFlakes and say yours was my favorite. Those corn buck teeth were funny and genius!
Grats @Swampruler And grats to everyone else who participated cause finishing it while enduring the looks from our families is, I think, an accomplishment on its own.
