So I need to buy some sealant but MSC is not in stock anywhere here, is there any alternatives that still are decent or do I wait for MSC and buy multiple when they're in stock? I used to hear that Citadel Munitorium Varnish was good but also seen comments that they may not be a viable alternative anymore.. does anyone have any experience with any sealants this year? (Something that's easy to remove with IPA!)
Personally I feel if you can wait for it and get more then one, is there a history of it not coming back in stock? for me I buy online from oversees and last time the forwarding company I use said they can't ship it to me! and I had to prove them they can and they did it for me before XD but now I see my country Amazon have it and will try that later and see.
While I don't like the Citadel munitorium varnish like I used to because of the now semi-gloss type finish, I am using it anyway. It may still be something to consider. You can check my photos to see how it's looking on my recent work and think about if it's tolerable for your work. Other than this complaint I have found it's still working well (and I recently wiped a faceup I made with the new formula and that was not harder than before, maybe even easier). I don't know anything else to recommend but I hope you find something good!
I buy my Mr Super Clear from traders on ebay, have you checked ebay for sellers in your country? A couple of examples below (maybe they could post to Norway, but maybe expensive). I'm just going to practise faceups so maybe the finish isn't too important for that reason as long as the actual sealant is safe for resin and easy to remove..the fact that theres a lot more in the Citadel one compared to MSC for the same price is a huge plus.
It definitely meets the criteria for practice: resin safe, removable, available. the good value of price to volume was what made me first try citadel sealants in the beginning, and they have been good to me even though they like to change the formula suddenly. The finish isn't horrible, it's just not my preference. But I think it's possible to make professional quality faceups with as well as practice ones so in my opinion, it's worth trying.
Citadel, the one time I tried it, was the most difficult thing I have ever tried to remove from resin, including DYE. I highly recommend Testor's model master Flat. It's never done me wrong, and works better in humidity than MSC.
Damn I'm not able to get Testor's here. Only options around seem to be citadel, army painters and some different vallejo varnishes. Also Tamiya ts-80 but I think that's supposed to be difficult to remove as well..
I just did my first face-up using Army Painter Matte Varnish, which I saw recommended on a reddit thread about MSC alternatives. Army Painter was a lot cheaper for me to try something for the first time, plus it's non-toxic so I don't feel as worried using it on the balcony of my apartment.
I was able to get a practice head cheap second hand so I guess I could be more experimental with sealants before I use it on my actual dolls, it's just my wallet wouldn't be ecstatic about it lol..How did the army painters work out? Like, the 'tooth' and finish?
I'll second army painter if you can get it. They're meant to be used on minis the same as citadel, which means it's safe to use on resin, and the products are generally really consistent and at least where I am, they have good shipping times.
They have it in store near me and on multiple websites. Maybe I should go in next week and get it then..
I thought the “tooth” is quite good, but I have nothing to compare it to. I was using watercolor pencils and they were working pretty well.
I'm late here, but I wanted to add that Volks ZM Finishing Powder spray sealant is my preferred sealant, if you can get it without insanely high shipping and fees. And for anybody in the US....I'm aware Hobby Lobby is problematic and controversial...but they do carry MSC cheaper than I've seen anywhere else. It's in the locked glass case in the model aisle with airbrush/spray paints, and is around $11. Walmart has it on their website, shipping only, for $15.
I've been using Citadel Munitorium Varnish and haven't had any issues yet. It's definitely cheaper than MSC, but I'm not sure how it compares. I would agree it can be less matte than I'd like, but if I shake it for a good 3 minutes, it comes out a bit better. It also dries/cures much faster.
Okay so I've been trying out Army Painter's varnish a whole lot now and can say it works really well! However the removal process with 100% IPA does not. It takes forever in comparison to when I removed MSC from a doll that has had it on for a couple years now. Because it takes so long I don't absolutely love the idea of using it on anything that's not a practice head because I'm paranoid lol. Think I'll try out using Mr. Color Thinner? And wait for MSC to come back in stock and buy multiple!
I've gone and gotten some Munitorium varnish to use on my dark skinned dolls and on inspecting the can, it says it contains Acetone 350ml/L (meaning there would be 140ml in my 400ml can). Is this harmful in the long term? I really don't want to spray my expensive DDD girl with this if it will eat away at her over time
@Thavron The newest munitorium varnish has only been sold for a relatively short time (a couple years) but I do not suspect it will be more harmful on resin than other commonly used and community reviewed safe sealants. The ingredients lists of these aerosol sealants tend to be scary I do not think this is the first useable product which has listed acetone. But this is not to undermine your concern, and I can only offer my experiences. I am not an expert about how these formulas are created and I will not pretend to be. My resin dolls are doing the same as ever (one or two have faceups from early 2024 with this formula), however I never liked munitorium (old formula) on vinyl. I'm not sure it really is stable or ideal on vinyl and generally wouldn't recommend it for vinyl. Earlier it was mentioned that Citadel was extremely hard to remove from a doll, but Citadel has completely changed their formula repeatedly. I just want to testify for anyone interested that the different formulas have certainly performed differently. The last 2 formulas were harder to remove than this new one. I honestly had a very easy time with the last one I wiped which had used this new formula.
The thing about acetone is that it evaporates very quickly and leaves no residue. That is why it is often used in solvent based aerosol sealants, it helps the spray to cure fast. As far as plastics goes, polyurethane is very resistant to solvents. Short term exposure is not normally something you need to worry about. For vinyl, more caution is probably wise, but acetone is common in the sealants usually used for that as well. As long as there is nothing preventing the solvent from evaporating (such as sealing it into an air tight container, the presence of other things that blocks or slow down the evaporation, or leaving it to soak in pure acetone) there is no way that it can cause damage over time as it won't be there over time.
