It's about time I put something in the "Finished Works" section. Too much faffing about and not really finishing any dolls... *glares at Viera's ugly face* I was recruited to work for a music video where I had to make a puppet of a monster. The monster had two stages; baby and adult. I was initially told to make a sculpture and then due to such little time (and having a crap team of animators who don't know what photoshop/free transform is) they told me to make it articulated and able to hold poses. I was given 2 weeks. All the photos of it are taken by the photographer George Tsikos on a green screen. I felt that with the lighting looking so nice I wouldn't edit them and I'd just show them like this. Adult body. Sculpted it first, then cut it up. A bit embarrassing. Part of my job on the production of the monster was to hold it in place in various poses. A lot of lighting here. The front legs couldn't support the massive weight of his apoxie sculpt body but the back legs could stand on their own. The stand is a wire hanger What I have learnt from this experience is to always sculpt the limbs fully stretched. v_v I saw Dragon doll Ryan the other day and felt shame. Anyone a Star Wars fan here? A lot of people associated the mouth the of the monster Scarlacc from Return of the Jedi. Thanks to the fantastic community at The Joint I've learnt so much. Thank you all!
He's ADORABLE!!!!! in a headless toothy sort of way! I think his poses look quite natural! He seems to be a creature conformed to run, so he'd look a little odd standing at rest I think (looks adorable laying at rest though XD that last picture is cuuuuuute!) I love the level of detail (I plan on detailing some personal OOAK ryan casts once I'm done with the ones I sold to pay for the materials to make him XD) Did you consider adding a torso joint? It may make him stand square (you mentioned he had issue with a heavy front end) a bit easier. Something to keep in mind for the future.
Very cool, very scary!! Have you read Neal Asher's "The Skinner"??? The fauna and unusual biology of creatures on his invented planet Spatterjay comes to mind when seeing this creature. Well, that and Half-Life.
I don't know how to cast yet and I'm not willing to start with this one. :XD He had a baby form which had exchangeable face plates but I made him so poorly that I'm too ashamed to show him. Actually yes! I wanted to give him a torso joint but working in such a tight deadline I thought I'd rather spend my last day priming and painting him. His front legs have the anatomy of a puma and the back legs have the anatomy of a bull. I had an idea of how he'd stand if I put notches in him but atm he's a floppy mess. HAHA! I've not played the first Half life but I saw a mod using the latest engine which had a hound-eye model. Everyone's been saying Scarlacc but you're the first to get the main influence right. XD I've been looking for a good scifi book to read. I'll check out Neal Asher. No-Head is supposed to gallop (run) or move in a gorilla-like way (walk). I have no place in how the animators make him move. It could be like South park for all I know. Thanks for all the comments!
What an odd looking dog. -shot- I agree with Blizava that No-head looks somewhat adorable. This is absolutely awesome. Great sculpt, great paint job.
but thats amazing! the muscle work, and the detail, esp in only two weeks!!! a face perhaps only a mother could love, but way way cool!
Wow, that is an AMAZING piece of work. I love the deep sculpting in the muscles... and the overall piece is just stunning. What music video is this for? Like, is there a chance any of us would casually see this and be like "Hey, I know that artist!!"
The band isn't really my kind of music, I just work for them :XD It's called Nathalie Jane and it's a relatively small band. They're applying to be on MTV during the Christmas holidays as they missed their application slot to be in the season before it. You'll get to see it soon hopefully. That's provided the animators aren't poor at meeting deadlines. I have absolutely no part in the animation so I don't know how he'll move. I think he might appear in sudden flashes. I wanted him to move kind of like a gorilla; rolling his shoulders as he walked or ran. Thank you! I wish I could make copies of him for you but he's so big and heavy. Plus his teeth would be a nightmare to make up a mould for. Thank you! The muscles are easy once you've done one side of them. At one point I looked at him and I just didn't see a monster anymore, just a lump of apoxie and a list of things to do. Now when I look at his face I just remember the hard work I went through those long two weeks. :XD
Wow , so original/ super cool! (I skimmed through the thread for pics) Did the band ever get the Music video done? I'd love to see what was done with your work applied to animation and such.
wow... speechless that's so awesome! please please please can you show us the little baby? please please? pretty please with a cherry? wow, that was weak haha but seriously, the details :dead
Oh my god !!! I so envy you this sculpt !! As my dream is to make monsters dolls. Yours is just wonderful I love how you work on his articulation and design. It is a really good job and in 2 weeks just waaa. Congratulations for this great work !
He. Is. So. AWESOME. The details and everything are just totally wicked. ...is it weird that I find him endearing and almost cute? Hahaha 3
~Haha! Funny you brought it up! I think he's cute aswell. He's only puppy sized. I carried him all the way to the West End in a picknic basket last summer for his green screen session. UPDATE: The music video is now made! But unfortunately the band broke up. Not surprising at all. I'll have to wait another month or so to show you guys because the director has signed a contract to ensure that it's an exclusive screening for some festivals so it's not available for viewing anywhere online. But I get an IMDB entry for it! ...Yaaaay! It's really thrilling to see my baby animated: Chasing, running, eating people. It's such a rush to know that I was a big part of that. A few bits I still find a bit shakey, but overall I feel very happy with it as a first time project working with an independant film team.
Thanks for comments! I thought everyone forgot about this guy! No decent pictures of the baby form yet, but I'll get him out of his box one day and take some pictures in the sun. You'll see on the video! Waaa! I envy your dollies so it makes me happy to hear this! I hope to see them in real life one day, probably the L'Doll convention.
Aaaahhh this is very cool! I love it when people stretch beyond the stereotypical human forms and use ball joints to try new and different creatures. Great work, fantastic sculpt.
That is such a lovely, bizarre, wondrous creature! I love him!!!!!!! When I see the head it makes me think of Dune and the sandworms. He's a little Shai Hulud =0) Really intensely awesome stuff there =0)
It's actually pretty cute...I'm sure with a longer deadline the joints could have been prettier ^_^ but the detail is astounding
Oh wow, that's amazing! I don't suppose you have any photos of what he looks like deconstructed? I'm trying to plan out a bulky quadruped kind of like this (except with a head and all that) and I'm in the process of researching what the best way to go about engineering his innards would be. People were suggesting setting the anchor point for the head and back legs in the torso with a back plate rather than the head? I've had a hard time finding many ball jointed 4 legged critters at all, let alone what they look like on the inside. The balance on those back legs is amazing! I feel like I've just spent all day rifling through this forum and being awed by the amount of bulk people can get to balance on these tiny feet.
Oh my gosh. This guy is AMAZING and with only TWO WEEKS??? Despite the whole being "a scary monster" thing, I think it's really cute.
I love them! The headless maw reminds me of a monster dog design from a Silent Hill fan comic I was writing/drawing years ago (SH Headless Hound). They could be friends!
That sculpting is just amazing- very doglike if I made the correct observation. It's almost adorable in some way? You did a great job with this doll :>
I have 0 reservations over how adorable I find this monster creature. It's amazingly well sculpted, I can't believe you finished him in under 2 weeks.
