Special Event [Newbie contest] Temporary Eyes | entries close September 10

Aug 17, 2019

    1. Newbie Temporary Eyes Contest

Sometimes, when you get a doll, they may arrive before you have anything ready! So you might use something you have around the house as a temporary measure until you get the perfect accessories! You might use some leftover craft fabric or recycle some old clothes to hand-stitch a simple outfit or hat, or maybe make a quick wig out of yarn.

But what to use for temporary eyes? Many mass produced beads work quite well as eyes, or even baking a pair of simple balls of polymer clay, but you can use almost anything!

So! This is a special contest for hobby Newbies!

What kinds of repurposed materials might you use as temporary eyes?

There will be two winners in this contest. The Mod team will vote on our favorites, based on creativity and uniqueness, so do your best to think outside the box! Contestants will be competing for an eye prize pack from MehiArt!

    2. It seems that we had no entries for this newbie contest yet, so we are extending this contest deadline! :)
It will be open for another week at least, so Newbies, there is still time to enter!

    3. So, I’m not an artistic person. Hell, I’m barely a person! But since this contest was announced on my birthday, I felt legally obligated to give it a try.

I’ll go first and make the other entries look amazing. Other newbies, you’re welcome!

So, I decided to start with Sculpey (yes, yes—using a medium made to create things, very creative). I also incorporated beads (glass) and tiny faceted jewels (also glass). I ended up glazing it with Sculpey brand satin glaze.

My victim—er, model is a Little Sophia sculpt named Lissette. I chose her because out of all three of my on topic BJDs, she’s the only one without proper eyes. The ones Little Monica sent are lovely, but they’re not the right color for the character. She actually doesn’t even have proper clothes yet, so excuse the ratty cardigan...

      Step one: Donut Eyes
      Step two: Spongebob Eyes
      Step three: Teary Spongebob Eyes

Hope I did that right! I can say without a doubt, this taught me (even more so) the skill, artistry, and precision it takes to make even decent looking eyes.

    4. This was such a challenge, but fun at the same time! I think the hardest part was the really long drying time >_< And they still weren't dry when I oh-so-carefully put them in my doll's head. Poor girl! I used what I had on-hand, because I am broke after buying real doll eyes *cackles*.

      Materials:
      White Playdough
      Nail Polish (Blue & Clear)
      Iridescent Glitter
      Clear School Glue

STEP 1: I started out creating two round balls from white play dough. I gently squished them down on a scrap piece of watercolor paper to make the backs flat. I used the round end of a closed ink pen to make an indention in the dome shape for the iris color. I placed a droplet of colored nail polish into the indention until it was covered. I let dry over night.

STEP 2: Using finely milled iridescent craft glitter, I sprinkled bits into the indention, on top of the colored nail polish. I poured droplets of clear nail polish inside the indention until filled. Let dry for 1 hour.

STEP 3: At this point, the eyes weren't drying fast enough Lol The clear polish also dried a bit hazy so it was hard to see the glitter. A dried crust was forming, but I could tell it was still mushy underneath. To do damage control, I patted a bit more glitter on top of the clear polish dome. I mixed water and a bit of clear craft glue to coat the entire eyeball so it would *hopefully* dry crystal clear but still show the glitter. It worked for the visual, but the texture is still a bit mushy. (It may be completely hard and dry in a couple days)

Overall this was so fun and I think I will attempt it again in the future and see if I can make it work...
