USA New York City Meetup

Jun 7, 2021

    1. Hi all!

I've spoken to Hobbywhelmed and offered to handle meetup organizing going forward. Many of you know me already from the NYC meetups or as a staff member from either DollNorth or (briefly but very fondly) Resin Rose, and I hope to meet even more of you going forward.

Location - Our new space at 875 3rd Ave, in the downstairs space on the 52nd side.

As ever, post in the thread if you need to find us.

      2026 Dates:

Please note: themes are suggestions! Please feel free not to participate. (But we’d love it if you did, and sometimes there are prizes!)

      January 10th, February 14th, March 14th, April 25th, May 9th, June 13th (Hot Doll Summer), July 11th (Hot Doll Summer 2), August 8th, September 12th, October 17th, November 14th, December 5th

Other Things to Keep in Mind
      • Meetups generally start around noon with most people arriving at one or so and go until 4-5pm, at which point people sometimes coalesce into groups for dinner. I will do my level best to get there first, but we're generally hard to miss once we start taking over tables.
      • This is a SHARED INDOOR SPACE with local businesses. Please mind your volume, and please do not sit on the 53rd St. side as the wall is thinner there and the skincare/wellness center needs quiet.
      • If you're bringing items to sell, you can mention as much in the thread in a general way (IE, ("I'm bringing clothes/wigs/a doll head to hopefully sell--") but no specifics.
      • No recasts.
      • Please mask up if you’re not feeling well to protect your fellow hobbyists.

    13. Hello,
Welcome, yes it is on December 10. I will be there. I'll most likely will be a bit early to do some Christmas street photography. There is another event going on in the city that day also. They are having their annual Santa something. So there will be all kinds of Santa's from regular to sexy. Including drunk ones too. Always glad to see new members in the area.
If your up for a morning walk before the meet. You can look me up.

      • x 1
    14. Santacon? LOTS of drunk Santas at all hours of the day. It's not too bad to navigate around them, though being crowded with them on a train can be... interesting. Is it even an organized event? I thought it was just an excuse to dress up like Santa and drink.

    51. Hello all,
Here it is the end of March. Next week is the meet already right in between Good Friday and Easter.

Hope to see see you all there.

    52. I live upstate NY & would love to attend one of these meet ups. What is it that you do? Admire dolls & take pics? I would like to have an idea so I can come prepared. Thank you :)

    53. Check out one of the old meet photo topics so you can get a visual idea of what it's like. Here's a link to one I attended from before the pandemic: /threads/new-york-city-february-9-2019-meetup.797324/

Doll meets involve admiring each others' dolls. Pics are welcome but not required. (Try to ask for people in the background to move or blur them out later.) There's usually discussion about doll topics. Sometimes there's restringing that gets done. I always bring tools with me when going to a doll meet in case someone needs help. I didn't bring tools for my first NYC meet and regretted it.

A lot of the meet is just talking about whatever, too. I've had a lot of nice conversations with people about a lot of different things at meets. The dolls bring people together and help to break the ice, so to speak.

You can't go wrong if you bring a doll and an open mind. Ask questions. Answer questions. Take pictures. Ask someone if they want to take pictures of your dolls together doing cute or funny things. If you don't have a doll yet, that's cool. See what it's all about before you buy one. Figure out what you like. It's generally look but don't touch without asking first, and if you ask then people are usually happy to let you hold their dolls.

I'd recommend bringing just one doll if it's your first time. I spent many years going to the meet and only ever brought one doll at a time, but some of the veterans bring multiple dolls. Doll stands are a big help, too. I'd try to bring one for every doll you bring.

I was thinking about going to the April 8th meet this Saturday, but I'll have to keep an eye on the news. Not to get too current eventsy, but the meet does take place right next to Trump Tower. I do want to make an attempt to go to the May meet no matter what. It might end up being my first one since before the pandemic and 10 years since my first NYC meet.

    54. Hello Amy Love,
      1) We get together and talk about whatever we want to talk about.
      2) Show off our dolls
      3) Photograph dolls
      4) If you ask nicely, you can hold other people's dolls (there are some very gorgeous dolls)
      5) We also have a few members that can 3D print
      6) Sometimes people bring some of there extra clothes and dolls
      7) I bring gifts for everybody for the holidays (Towels that you can hang on the refrigerator or stove)
      8) After the meet we go out for dinner (usually about 5:00 PM
      9) One of the lady's makes doll jewelary.

If you are planning on coming into NYC on one of the transit systems (train or bus), let me know and I can meet you at the station and we can go up to the meet (IBM/Trump Tower building). We are in the IBM atrium side.
I will be bringing up some Easter towels this weekend (4/8/2023). The meets officially start 12:00 noon. However, people usually start to show up after 1:00 PM.

    55. Thank you so much for replying I'm truly interested in attending in the future for sure!!!

Thank you for the follow & the information ! Such kindness in wanting to meet up with me when I plan to make this happen in the future. I usually take amtrack to Penn Station. But I'm waiting on commission face up appointments so my dolls are not ready just yet. Thank you again :)

    56. You're welcome, Amy. When you're able, come on out, have some fun, laugh some laughs, make some new friends, etc.

I dug up this visual guide I made for packing a doll in a duffel bag. This is a 60cm Dollfie Dream Dynamite, but similar or smaller size resin dolls follow the same procedure. Towels, a couple pillows, and you're good to go. The only thing I do different now is take off the shoes. I had a pair of high heels get damaged while on my doll's feet. I've had much better luck taking the shoes off and tucking them elsewhere. My dolls survive NJ Transit trains and the subway. ABJD Packing Guide

EDIT: I should also add that especially for resin dolls with delicate and/or outstretched fingers, I stuff pipe insulation in a sock, stick the hand and part of the sock into the crack of the pipe insulation, and wrap up the hand/arm with an elastic band. You can find pipe insulation at Home Depot for cheap. https://www.homedepot.com/b/Plumbing-Pipe-Insulation/N-5yc1vZbuy9

    57. Wow I truly appreciate the pics on how to pack a doll when traveling! Thank you very much :) I've seen your iplehouse jessica sculpt and she is sooo LOVELY! Iplehouse is my favorite. They help bring my characters alive with their wonderful sculpts. My y.i.d marien just got delivered to me & soon a isabel. Then this month I should be able to purchase a dylan sculpt & then the following month a claude. I'm writing a novel so iplehouse is perfect in bringing my characters alive. Thank you again for replying!!

If you dont own a jessica iplehouse sculpt forgive me lol I was looking at so many ppls dolls on this site ! & might of gotten confused lol your lucky to own a dollfie ! :) I want the sailor moon dollfies so bad!

I just checked & you do own a jessica!

    58. Penn Station is just south of the PABT (Port Authority Bus Terminal). So it is not a problem to meet. The meet is a bit north of there, and we could take the subway or walk.
Also don't worry about dolls not being ready. I came to the first few meets without a doll myself. The group helped my with copious information so that I could make an informed decision.
We also do some mini "How to" sessions. Stringing dolls happens from time to time. I carry most of the tools necessary for any stringing issues that may occur. We have several people that are very, very knowledgeable when it comes to stringing and various other things concerning the dolls.

We will be here when you are ready. I come into NYC in the morning on a bus and I check into this thread to see what may be happening at the current time.

    59. Just an FYI since I was saying I might do the meet tomorrow, I think I'm going to skip tomorrow and shoot for next month. I really, really want to go next month, and I wonder if tomorrow's going to be current eventsy with it being Easter weekend and whatnot. Safe travels to everyone tomorrow.

I might change my mind if I hear some news, but otherwise see you in May.

    60. I'm planning on going to the meet. Lately people have not been forthcoming with their plans. However several people show up for the meet. A lot of them are talking on other forums and convey information in that fashion. From what I have heard last month many will be making an appearance at the meet this month. Good luck with your decision whatever it is. See you at some point.

I will have presents for everybody in attendance.
