New Popovy "Venus" body

Sep 20, 2020

    1. The sisters introduced a gorgeous, curvier, of Renaissance proportions body.
I am definitely saving up for one.

    2. To be honest I have no clue what is "Renaissance" about this doll. I love how it's sculpted, those details are stunning. But it's a twig arms, slim doll with a bit of tummy fat. I think it's beautiful, but adding a bit of fat on tummy, with skinny bum, legs and arms isn't enough for me to count it as" changing the trend". For me it's another beautiful, but relatively slim doll.

For me Renaissance body is more like that Google Image Result for https://pbs.twimg.com/media/C9YTRIbXgAAwVaL.jpg

    3. It's poetic interpretation, dear, no one is interested in replicating reality.
There's enough of that already, to go round.

    4. I am so into this new body! I'm waiting to see what the 2-part torso looks like :D

      • x 1
    5. me too!!

    6. Obviously I can't speak for everyone, but I would be far more interested in a truly Renaissance style body than yet another super thin one, it would be different and really beautiful and interesting.

Not that this body isn't pretty, but there are a lot of well-sculpted very thin female BJD bodies out there. And calling it a Renaissance "Venus" body actually makes me like it less because it makes me expect something other than what is actually being presented.

    7. this new body is so beautiful! i’m excited to see more pictures of it, as well as more examples of the posing with the single part torso. the 2 part torso will surely be wonderful, but there is something so dreamy about the complete, sculptural torso.

      • x 1
    8. I admit I was interested at the idea of a new body, but I definitely agree that it's a little ridiculous to say that this body is changing any trends  It's a pretty body, but to me it just looks like slightly more standard bjd proportions as opposed to the super stick thin fashion illustration look their previous body had.

      • x 16
    9. I'd have to see a lot more pictures in good light to have my final verdict, but what I see right now makes me more interested in maybe getting one of these dolls... Eventually.
The sculpting is beautiful, and yes I do recognize the famous Venus de Milo inspirations in some of the curves and breast shape, but she IS very stretched out and thinned... So I do have to agree that is not breaking any trends of BJD in general - she is still thinner than a lot of others dolls in her size :)
Still - beautiful work and I'll enjoy seeing what they do with the body - the sisters are very talented :)

      • x 7
    10. When i saw it was called venus i was expecting a fuller figure maybe like a greek goddess statue, but that being said, when i saw it i thought it was just lovely! I was pleasantly surprised to see it actually resembled my body shape which is nice to see:) and i think it does still give the goddess statue vibe but a little slimmer... its very pretty:)

      • x 2
    11. I agree with you. This is a beautiful doll, and she is unique among BJDs, but I would still see her as more or less slender.

      • x 4
    12. We all have right for artistic interpretation on particular takes. But I think that it's condescending assuming that no one wants realistic bodies that are the actual plus size, as we all have different tastes

There are plenty of dolls that are thin, and I absolutely love this edgy aesthetic. I like my dolls extremely slim. I just don't think that marketing this as Renaissance figure is adequate.

      • x 15
    13. Well, I say passing off a personal opinion as generalization is certainly not the most prudential way of starting a discussion about body images in dolls? Especially in a hobby where a lot of artists are so involved in expressing their take on reality via the dolls, right alongside with those who explore their fantasy potential. Maybe it has something to do with from what part of the doll world you are coming to BJDs, since a lot of BJD hobbyists traditionally did not come from the fashion doll scene, and a lot of them still don't.

Anyway, the new body is eyecandy in those pictures, but too incongruous in its concept for me.

      • x 11
    14. When Popovy says "changing the trend", I don't think it should be seen as anything other than a self-referential tag-line.

I don't think they are thinking of the bjd hobby as a whole, they are only speaking of their own evolution. Not to say they don't care about the bjd hobby at all, but really, with the recognition of their works around the world, why would they bother talking about the hobby in general? They don't need bjd hobbyists at large to sell their work, they have enough of their own following. I think they are "changing the trend" for Popovy, which is true, they have gone in a different direction.

I also think they are only referencing Bottecelli's "The Birth of Venus" who indeed has an otherwise slim body with some tummy, not referencing all shapes found in Renaissance paintings of women.

Also, Mod note: Please don't fight in this thread. Any further bickering will be removed.

    15. I too am interpreting this as a change from their previous bodies. I am, for once, interested in a Popovy doll! I have always liked some of the faces but the old bodies were not to my taste. This is very exciting! I love the little dimples :D

      • x 7
    16. I definitely like this more than their previous bodies! The clothed pictures look really great. The shape in the torso is really nice, the hips are a great shape, and the addition of definition on tummy and muscles etc. For me it's a shame this doesn't carry over to the arms... the arms are very-tube like, lacking shape/definition, so that turns me off it.

      • x 4
    17. I would prefer a little more meat on the arms also... I'm wondering if perhaps it's designed so that the doll looks proportionate when wearing clothes? It's hard to find fabric completely in scale for a doll sometimes; if she was in a sweater or a longsleeved shirt, I think the arms would look absolutely perfect in relation to the torso :love

    18. [IMG]

      She's like a piece of art. I can't deal :D

      • x 10
    19. Yes, definitely, being clothed would hide it and keep things in proportion. But then you wouldn't get to see the lovely body

    20. Crop top sweater with little shorts? ;)

      • x 2
    21. The new Venus body is drop dead gorgeous!! :D I like many of the Popovy face sculpts, but have always found their bodies to be too skinny for my taste. This new body has soft curves and looks healthy, but the proportions and look is still very true to the Popovy sister style^^ Oh I would love to be able to bring home a Popovy doll someday- and would definitely choose this body! I wonder how much the new body is?

    22. When the Sisters said they were starting a new trend, I was expecting a lot. Then, I disenchanted when seeing photos of Venus. First, to me, it's nothing new, it's somehow Sandro Botticelli's Venus birth in 3D. Excepted that there is lack of harmony between the rather chubby body and legs and the tube like arms. The legs are more renaissance type yes, but photos show Venus on her toes, which give her some elegance that she is probably loosing with flat feet. Also, the fact that the body has no joint is such a challenge, it brings us back to the early BJD posing so poorly. What to do with such doll ? one can see that none of the photos show us different poses, but always these of Sandra Botticelli or the so called Venus de Milo (Aphrodite in fact). Hard to play with such a doll compared to Marmitesue's hyperarticulated bodies, as well as Pasha's new body, to name the best successful BJD.
I really do love the previous Popovy body, because it keeps the magic of dolls, not trying to make it look too human.
My only explanation for such a subit change and recoil back is motivated by the recasts actually on the market, plus the Popovy style wigs now made by more and more artists, plus the eyes etc. The Sisters had to propose something new fast, we were many expecting a boy, would have been great, but it would have taken then too much time to make it. Very honestly, I do not think the plain body will have much success on the long run, may be the one joint one might get some fans.
The close photos of the skin we saw to day on IG show nothing special in fact, it's the same well known method of using brush-on mat medium sealant with very fine sponge so to give the aspect of human skin, other face up artists have been using this method for some time, I do have one of my doll done this way. It's impressive on close photos, but in real life, and on such small dolls as Popovy or same kind of dolls, it does not make a real difference, excepted the feeling when touching the resin.
This said, does any one knows if the previous, so successful body, will still be offert ? I really hope so.

    23. I like the body, especially the jointless torso. I don´t pose my dolls much, so I can safely go for aesthetics.

As I understood from their Instagram posts, the body will only be offered to VIP customers, whoever those are, and for a limited time? If I got that right, I don´t even need to start thinking about getting one in the near or not so near future.

      • x 2
    24. Yes you'r right, the next pre order will be for there VIP clients, which means a "normal" client can't expect to have a doll in hand before vey long, probably end of next year or even further in time, hard to know.

    25. I do hope they will eventually offer the unjointed torso as an option for all,
I love how the eye can travel on the fine detail of the skin and curves..
      xx

100% same point of view! ;)

    26. Oh my goodness! The body comparison photos are coming out :D I am so in love with the size difference and how different she is to the current bodies! She's so elegant AAAAHH~~ :love

Taken from the Popovy Sisters instagram!

I'm in the camp for the jointed torso Venus body :XD: I love posing my Land¥ so much and I've been so excited to see more photos. These ones are killing me LOL

    27. Wow, I love it!

    28. Not my test at all, also this is not the plain torso, is it ?
Venus seems taller, am I wrong ?
As long as the Sisters keeps making the previous body too, it's fine for me.
Just for fun : makes me think of an Opera Ballet girl, slim and beautiful, who went to the States for a year, had eaten burgers every day, and here what she see in the mirror when back home :...(

    30. It's also a matter of culture : mediterranean people like round women, but have they much choice ?

    31. guys, relax, it's a doll.
We're all influenced by things that inspire us.
Inevitably, the new carries the old in it.
I'm just upset by the chipped corner on Venus' stand base. ;)

    32. Ouch, I see a whole lot of vitriol here. :sweat I have never owned one of their dolls, because I wasn't a fan of the twiggy body type...although recently I have come to appreciate it a bit more, since after years of collecting I have developed a greater liking for wide variety. Still...maybe I'm wrong, but when they said that they are starting a new trend, I got the feeling that they meant within their own aesthetic - going from super emaciated waif to something with a notably rounded tummy and thighs...pretty much a 180 degree turn. I think that's pretty neat, because rarely does a doll company do such a thing. And if they do not view themselves as artists, then what are they, and what is the point of what they do? I think the body is lovely overall, with waaay too skinny arms, but every artist is allowed their own creativity, and it's not required to match my taste.

I have a doll that cost me over $2.5K, and if my house were burning, I'd save my family and pets and literally not give him a second thought. So yeah, in the end, just a doll...and this is just a hobby. Love it? Buy it. Don't love it? Walk away.

    33. I don't think it's culture and things like that. I don't think it has anything to do with what we find appealing in humans most of the time. I mean the default Popovy body is not realistic. If it is, then it is a dangerously thin body. I don't think any 'culture' accepts this necceserily. So why attribute the same to Venus? I wouldn't make any judgement on someone who likes either body. It's just art. It's just a sculpture. It's a doll. Like an illustration, it's an artistic expression. Likewise, maybe we can refrain from making judgements about people's tastes and cultures and dolls 'looking like they went to the states and ate burgers' even in jest this gets into uncomfortable territory, I think

    34. Hmm - some interesting opinions here! My hat tip goes to those keeping a cool head!

I would like to theorize that when the Popovy Sisters say this is "a new trend" they might be referring to the content of their own work, not the entire bjd world. It is a new trend for them, if not for others. But I haven't been reading all their posts closely. Maybe they gave the impression they are doing something never seen before in the doll world? If so, that's obviously not accurate and is at least disingenuous of them.

On the other hand - to the people saying the Popovy Sisters "copied" other artists - look, this is a body shape real humans have. It doesn't belong to one artist any more than an hourglass figure does. Why shouldn't they use it if they like it? Personally, I think the new body appears a bit unbalanced because the bust and arms are still quite narrow. But it certainly isn't more unrealistic than the old body.

However, what the new body is NOT is "fat" (by any stretch of imagination) so I'm with @Datsuki that jokes and comments about the new body being "fat/ugly/etc." are a bad idea even if not intended to offend.

    35. --Mod Note--

Some posts have been removed from this thread.

Drama is not allowed on DoA.

"Copying" is only an issue on DoA if it involves recasting.

Of course you may discuss if a doll does not suit your tastes, but using DoA discussion threads to complain at length about why you don't like something is not appropriate.

Please remember, DoA's #1 Rule is "Be Nice."

    36. Reading all this I cannot help thinking "what`s the point anyway since only a selected few will be able to buy this body" ;) Even if you have the money, no VIP, no Venus. But seriously, I hope they will make the body available to the ordinary buyers at some point, since I really like it.

    38. Didn't they say that this body will be available but with a jointed torso?
I could be wrong, but I think only the solid torso was made in a few examples and will be made available to their most loyal customers.

    39. From what I get from their insta - both version will be available in catalogue but there will be a "super limited full set no joint torso" as well.

    40. Well, if that´s the case, that would be good :) One torso joint is something I can live with!

    41. I'd like to see new body pictures without that "insta blur" and other tricks that sculptors ought to use now for showing their work. Just longing waiting for the sisters blog update.
By the way, once I have seen similar proportions ( round tummy etc. + slim hands and neck) in real life. It was the pictures of Deva Cassel. She was a teen then, so for me this new sisters body is rather body of the very young woman than mature bodies of the Renaissance paintings.

    42. exactly! She really looks like Deva Cassel

no one ordered it yet? I wonder if body v and iv will differ in price?

    43. @alla3261 I e-mailed them about it, as I plan to purchase a Venus-1 body. A nude doll with the solid torso Venus body is $1200, with the Venus-1 body it is $900. Body IV is $900, there was no separate price listed for scarification so I suppose it's the same cost.

I was surprised by the price difference, but I suppose it makes sense as it probably is harder to get a good clean cast for a larger torso piece.

      • x 2
    44. You plan to ask for a Venus body with scarifications ? do they do that ?

    45. No, Body IV comes with or without scarification. I think they're both $900, as they didn't specify an additional cost.

Venus doesn't come with scarification. Sorry if that was unclear.

    46. Ah, ok, thanks! but is 900$ for the Venus body and an head, or just a body ?

    47. Nude doll, body and head (all heads are the same price). Eyes are a separate cost

    48. I would like to see more CLEAR pictures of Venus1 body, not sure yet if the torso joint works fine ...

    49. I was debating between Venus and Venus-1, as I love the look of the solid torso (it's so nice that the gaze isn't interrupted by a joint) but the extra expressiveness of the single joint in Venus-1 is really nice.

check out this photo, the arc in the back that the single joint gives is very beautiful.
      Venus-I-.jpg

    50. Thanks! to be honest, I prefer the joint to be right under the breast, this way it's less noticeable ...

    51. Yeah I completely agree with you there. Off-topic but I own several vinyl dolls that have the joint there, it's fantastic for all types of clothes.
I think the Venus-1 joint is not that noticeable though, unless you have the doll in very revealing clothes.

    52. Ahh~ I'm so in love with Venus-1 and I think that might be my next Popovy. I just need to wait awhile to accumulate those finances.

    53. I'm wondering what resin she's in (most of) the promo and the catalogue photos. Coral?

    54. Yes, I believe it's coral.

    55. Thanks! And it is. Someone had already asked on Instagram.

    56. I don't post much but I'll come out of hiding to say omggggg this new body is gorgeous and has such fine sculpting.

Congrats to anyone lucky enough to be able to bring her home!

    57. I for one love this sculpt and it’s made me seriously consider buying a Popovy.

It’s nice to see one of the most popular and well known fashion doll artists create an aesthetically stunning and interesting to dress doll body, that isn’t such a glorification of being critically underweight. Human models are still very very thin on average, of course - but not to such an extreme and ill-looking extent lately as they were 1998-2014ish. I love realistic fashion art BJDs the most, but I feel that a lot of fashion doll artists grew up during and are still stuck in that era and obsessed with frail underweight bodies as the pinnacle of beauty and best to dress. I wish there were more options that reflected changing trends in fashion towards a more healthy body weight, like Venus. I am tired of doll bodies that look like anorexic teenagers with protruding bones, honestly.

    59. I really like this new body. I liked the old one too, though, so I'm honestly not sure which one I would choose if I ever buy a Popovy.

    60. i like this body more than the old one, can't look at thin to anorexic women
