I'm not entirely sure if this belongs here, but my MG Ryu floating head smells fairly strongly of what I recognise as meths. I haven't had him long, although he arrived mid December. Thus he had been in his box a good while. When I first opened it it was quite overpowering. He's generally ok when he's out and about, but I store him in his box and he smells quite strongly for a while whenever I take him out. He also still smells of it if I sniff near his head. Is this normal? If it is please forgive my virgin resin nerves.
I nearly died when I opened the box for my Ryu. The smell was SO overpowering I thought I was going to pass out! But Ihave him out and he doesnt smell all tha tmuch anymore! TC
Thank you! Ok, phew, so we think it's normal for Ryus to do this? At least I know he's not going to fall apart on me (I had a horrible dream where that happened and I couldn't get refunded!) Do other dolls do this, or is it something about MD's production process do you know?
lol Maby I'm odd ^-^;; I love the smell of new resin! *no i do NOT do ANY kind of drugs of any kind and never have!* lulz anyway just like TornChaos said the smell leavs after a bit ^-^ so just let him hang out for a week or so and he will no longer smell this way ^-^ -Kira
Alright, thank you very much for you help! I shall attempt to find somewhere where he can air and not be knocked over by my heffaloomp-ness!
yeah, my MG ryu smell's like the a really strong adhesive used for shoe making (we call it RUGBY). A different smell when I got my first doll (I really like the resin scent of DOD) It's so strong that I decided to wash it with detergentsoap with floral scent. good thing that it worked ^__^
Lol, my Mini fee Shiwoo still smells and I've had him for over a year. Someone should invent nice-smelling stuff that they can put in the resin. XD
My lati doll smells a little bit but it is slowly fading. Even the box smells. I try to open the box and let it sit there opened for a long period of time. Didn't know this was a common thing until I read this thread. XD
My dollmore doll smelled when I first got her. I figured it out that it was the kneaded earser or eye putty in her head. Once you have them out of the box for a while it fades. I think the Narae's? actually come with a perfume soaked cotton piece inside them.
i like the resin smell but know the dust is bad so yeah >_>;; hehe. anyways, i just left my girls out to air alot and stuff...but they all still smell a bit. its actually irritating me a little now, lol
My DoT girl has a constant resin smell... I've only had her for about 3 months so I hope it will go away soon! I got used to it but every once in a while it will make me sick. Maybe I should use some body spray on her! Angell Studio dolls are sold with a fragrance option which smells nice. I didn't order a scent but they gave me one on my boy anyway, but it's a pleasant smell.
I love the "new resin" smell. I practically snorted my Unoa Lusis kit the first time I opened up the box. x'D I understand I'm a freak and many people have given their dollies a bath with a little soap to help rid of the smell if it is so desired. :'P fragranced dolls? that's news to me. sounds cool, I suppose.
It's not a harmful odor of any sort, is it? Not like actual resin dust? I'm paranoid when it comes to my bird and fumes of any sort can make them sick very easily. Is it something I ought to keep him away from until it fades? Or am I just being paranoid? XD
I have 11 parrots, and I would not have them near a doll until the resin scent is gone. They are terribly sensitive to that sort of thing.
There's no reason to risk your birds... but it's not like you can't keep the heads in the same room as them. It's not dust or anything that causes the smell, it's just the resin continuing to cure, and it lets off a bit of fumes.
Actually I hate to contradict you, but you are quite wrong there. Birds are terribly sensitive to chemical fumes. I would NEVER risk a bird around chemical fumes of any sort. They have been known to be killed by the waterproofing spray on shoes sprayed in another room, or by overheated Teflon pans in a kitchen. These are not urban myths, but facts.
Considering HOW strong the smell of my last body was, I wouldn´t have it near anything smaller than a person for the 1st week. For me it was a little too much, I got a small headache from it. Maybe it's just that I'm sensible to that kind chemicals smells. But, if it can have an effect on a person, then there is a chance the poor birdie won´t be happy about it either. Just to be sure, I would have the BJD aired somewhere else for a while before it's on the same room as your bird. Better safe than sorry!
When I got my Roxydoll Lucy I was surprised how strong such a tiny doll could smell! I've had her in the box for the two months I've had her because I decided to sell her, so she still smells. Actually, when I first got her my dog was investigating the packaging but when he got a whiff of that inner box and the resin he actually snarled at the box! It was pretty funny.
As much as I like the idea of a more pleasant smell...I'm glad it isn't standard to perfume the dolls or I would be allergic to the things since I am very allergic to all perfumes and perfumed sprays, soaps, chemical etc... (including basically anything with an artifical scent to it. The resin smell bothers me when I open the boxes but after I air them out a bit I can tolerate them, however, I don't think I would be so luck with those scents that Angell Studio adds to their dolls (unless it was pure vanilla extract, or the like, which I sincerely doubt).
It's a good thing I asked! My bird's cage is in my room and being as my first doll is only on his way, I didn't know about the smell and I can only assume I would have opened the box in my room as well. How long does the smell take to fade? Does washing help? Maybe he'll spend a few days in my bathroom with the fan on once he gets here. :P
How long the smell lasts seems to differ from company to company. I would say put your doll somewhere well ventilated away from your cutey until you can't smell the resin anymore. FYI none of my dolls has had that smell. Just lucky I guess.
I would just go by how it smells. Not all dolls always smells. The strong smell of the only stinky doll I got was much less after 24h out of the box, but the insides still smells some. Shyam: >_< I'm not Smelly!!!! T_T Minako: ^^ Yes you are *hugs it* but I love you anyway
I've found that a doll only smells if it's been packaged for awhile. Even my dolls that are 3 years old plus smell if I pack them up for awhile. I think they give off fumes most of the time, but in such small quantities that you don't usually notice until you pack them (so no air gets to them). You can smell it if you stick your nose in one of the joints and sniff. :P (on my newer ones anyway). To those with birds; you should probably be careful for the first couple of days, but after you stop smelling it yourself, I'd bet your birds would be fine. But of course, it's not worth loosing a pet over, so if you're unsure keep them separate.
I agree with SapphireMusings, I just got a "pre-loved" doll body a couple days ago and right when I took it out of the box it fumed up my room. Even though it's not new, being wrapped up must have caused the smells to build up--the body was wrapped excellently, which I'm grateful for. I've been leaving it alone in the other room (even though I want to play with it!) and the smell seems to be dissipating gradually. I really hope it goes away completely!
I got my first doll a little over a week ago and I was fretting over nothing. He doesn't smell at all unless I intentionally sniff at him (which makes him kind of uncomfortable so I only do it when he's not paying attention).
Hi Angelmouse - I have my dolls in a case from many different compaines and when I open that case oh I almost get knocked over from the strong smell of resin. I think it's very common to have the resin smell. But I do not smell it when they are in my guest room. I think it just happens when they are closed in. I now when I get a shipment of AOD they are very strong as well but the smell goes aways once they are out of the boxes.
Glad to see this thread is still being useful for people! My Ryu's been constantly out of his box now, and I don't notice the smell anymore. Perhaps it is something to do with being boxed up - although that's pretty scary because if the fumes are building up that means they're giving out some kind of fume all the time. Weird. I just need to remember to cover him up from the sun, now. Thanks so much for your help, everybody xxx
I don't know if it's her or her wig. It's not that aweful though but I'm a bit bothered. I regularly clean her by wiping her with wet towel washed with dish soap. I haven't disassembled her yet but I'm thinking of doing it when she's really that dirty. But anyhow, is it me? Or do dolls really smell?
Well, new dolls have the fresh-out-of-the-factory resin smell. Like chemicals and MSC. It can last for a while, but usually goes away. If it's not that, maybe it is her wig, and if that's the case, try washing it with soapy water.
Like Ardi said, new dolls do smell. I've had Kome since October and he still, just barely, has that "new doll" smell. He'll probably stop smelling completely in a couple more months. You try taking her wig off for a couple days and seeing if she still smells? You could try that to figure out where the smell is coming from.
@Ardi: She's not a new doll. I got her second hand. But perhaps the owner really kept her well which is why she still has this new doll smell even if she's already 2 years old now? @junkies promise: Like I said she's not a new doll. I got her second but I think she's well kept by the owner. It's an alien smell to me. I haven't smelled something like it before. But I'll do what you adviced and see what will happen. thanks!
I had a doll for 2 years. After the first few months she pretty much lost the smell, but it returned after she'd been in a box for a couple months. My boy (cp el) has a VERY strong smell if he's been in his carrying case or box for more than a day, but it usually goes away within a day or so. When he first arrived it was really bad though and took forever to go away. Its fairly normal, even with older dolls, for that smell to come and go. I don't have any advice on getting rid of it though, aside from leaving them exposed to fresh air, and maybe a dish soap/water bath (not sponge bath)
Oh I think your right! Guess I'll expose her more to fresh air and try to avoid putting her back inside her box. Because now I think that's where the smell comes from! Thanks eleniel!! X3
The smell also might be the eye putty. My doll smelled strongly especially around the head and it was the eye putty. If you leave the doll out of the box for a while it will fade.
If you got the doll secondhand and haven't disassembled her, it's possible that the elastic got damp at some point and has gone all mildewy.
... That is an interesting question o_O; And these have all been interesting answers? XD But the dolls I've met do have their own smell (namely faceup sealer --- COUGH!)
I actually really love that smell; it's slightly sweet and almost plasticine. I also happen to like the smell of a little MSC, too. Haha, I suppose these don't count very favorably towards my health.
Mmm, from the dolls I have owned, I'll say DZ and CP have the strongest smell when they arrived. I still remember how badly my MNF Shiwoo smelled when he arrived! It gave me a headache the first day and then after a couple of days it was gone ^^ Question though. People have mentioned the resin giving out fumes. How harmful are these fumes we're talking here? Does anyone know for sure, or are you only assuming there are fumes? I remember asking this ages ago in a another thread and never got a response :/
If you're not sure that's it and don't want to take her apart completely, you could always just hold down a part of the body (like the lower torso) and bend the upper body back to get a good look inside.
Oh I did that yesterday and it's not her strings that smell. I found out that her wig and resin smell are different so the smell is kind of mixed up? She really smells like resin and her wig smells like wig. So yeah... she smells...
I'm pretty sure we're assuming the existance of those fumes. I personally don't believe they're much more than the fumes that ANY plastic gives off. For example, y'know the new car smell? Or how your car tends to have a sickly plastiky smell after being left in the sun for hours? It's the same sort of thing with resin. So I would venture to guess that resin's smell isn't toxic in the slightest, or if it is, then it's such a little dosage of toxicity that it wouldn't have any long term effects on our bodies, even with build up over time. ^__^
I feel almost cheated! I've been sniffing at my DZ Ying and .. there's no smell on him at all.. Well a faint smell of fabric from his robes that I've sewn for him.. but.. the resin? No Then again, I got him from a DZ agent that had him "in Stock", so it is potentially a long time since he was actually cast. Perhaps that's why? Anyway.. the smell certainly fades over time...
lol, open the headcap! It doesn't happen to my Angelregions or DODs. Not even my Volks dolls, but the CPs... there I go to change their eyes or reposition them and I get hit by the strong resin smell inside
Mmm but I replaced the foul-smelling eye-putty as soon as I got him home... It smelled like kerosene and anything that smells like that can't be good for resin.. so I promptly replaced the eye putty with white Tack-it™ So.. he really doesn't smell of anything. Not even inside his head (and yes.. I DID sniff inside his head when you mentioned it..Curiosity + cat...... LOL)
Lol, same here. I love the new resin smell and I even hope it doesn't fade away. Then again, I do like the smell of new crayons, pencils, paper, etc.
Hm have you tried washing her wig then? i know people say resin can smell for years but i dont think my dolls ever smelled.
@Sweetiemi: No I haven't, but I think I know the reason... To everyone: I finally found the source of the weird smell on my doll and it's her box. XD Ever since my parents bought me a violin case as my doll carrier, my little girl doesn't smell anymore. Yesterday, I did an experiment, I placed her back inside the box and the next day the smell was there again! Hahaha... I didn't know it was just her box. I'm glad it wasn't serious at all. Thanks everyone for helping!!! *MASSIVE HUGS TO EVERYBODY*
i got my doll new, and i have her for almost a year, and the smell is still with her. ...smells are always connected to something for me..associations...so now if she stops smelling the way she does it will feel like loosing a part of her ...personlity? just a part of her. its complicted....but i like the smell...i guess its the same as the smell of petrol...some ppl really like it some cant stand it...some dont care im going to try keeping her out of the box, and see what happens
Yesss, like wonderful delicious resiny poison Creepy talk aside, resin does have a distinct smell, it gets less strong the longer you have them but my boys still have it
Is it kind of like the smell of baking polymer clay? That always scares me... >< My mom's also kind of sensitive to things... I certainly hope it's OK... But we have a big covered back porch I could use for airing things out, if need be. ^_^'
My dad's bird actually died from resin fumes even though I was outside the house when curing the stuff.. so I'd say to be careful with resin-related fumes when they're really strongish for you yourself ._. The car smell is actually slightly toxic too, according to some local news report that researched it. And I sort of liked MSC's sweet smell.. until my lungs and the back of my head started burning a bit @__@
I always have an aircleaner going in the bird room and I never have the feathered kids near anything that gives off fumes. Humans may not be as sensitive as birds, but it can be a problem and we should never just gloss it over.
My new dolls smelled a little when I got them(today~). The smell doesn't really bug me, but I feel like I've got a lump in my throat, am I allergic?! I hope I get over it! Funny, when I used casting resin, even in it's liquid state it didn't bother me. But the kind I used didn't smell either...
Ive had my EL for around 4 months now, he still carries that smell, its very strong if i leave him in his box and then take him out a day or so later, but after that it usually goes after a day^^, or my nose just gets used to it same with my minifee~ but it doesnt really bother me at all ^^
Considering i don't have a doll yet... what kind of smell is that? o_o It's kinda funny that they are so pretty and expenside and yet they smell bad.>>
