New Doll in Progress - Liander (small update 1st post - 9/21)

Sep 6, 2006

    1. For a while now I have debated starting to make a BJD out of some of my main characters and I finally have - Started that is. I've spent the last week or so working on a head for my first doll, Liander. I don't think it came out perfect by any standards, but I'm happy with him nontheless. :)

Sorry the pics aren't that good and please ignore the mess in the last one, I'm cleaning my room drastically and everything is sort of scattered at the moment.

The eyes he is currently sporting are self made as well and a work in progress. They're made from hot glue, 2 small round pieces of an index card painted with watercolors, and clear nail enamel.

I'm hoping to start scuplting his body some time this week. :)

      Edit:

Alright, I still haven't gotten to sculpting the body, but I was able to get the eyes a little closer to the same shape. I also started making him a wig, so I just decided to post some more current pics.

I don't know if you can see the eyes to well in these pics though... if not, sorry.

    2. those eyes are made with hot glue??? wow!

    3. very cool, and the nose and ears are especially realistic. Unless you're going for a stylised look, the eyes are a bit high up, making the nose look very long. But I kind of like the long-face lookon him. Also, you'll probably want to give him a larger, higher forehead, or the wig will swallow his head. A larger forehead will also make his eyes look more balanced.

    4. i like his nose and his face shape a lot!
i do agree with Iroha though, his eyes seem a little high for the length of his head. and the left eye isn't quite the same shape, but you probably knew that.

he seems to be coming along nicely though!
      xoxo

    5. Oh wow! I love the way he looks! He reminds me of Schmendrick in the Last Unicorn. I LOVE LOVE LOVE his nose. My only crit is that the head looks like it's a bit small on the top, which will make it hard to fit a wig on him. It's a problem I've had with all my sculpts that I've done. But if that doesn't bother you, then I wouldn't worry about it, because it looks AWESOME.

    6. He looks great .. love the nose shape and the long nose look :)
I can suggest a way to give him a little more forehead if you want to achieve that (altho I think he looks really kool the way he is). You could lower his eyebrow line and that would increase the forehead area.
His high eyebrows give him a slightly surprised look where a lower eyebrow line would give him a more relaxed (or even stern if you want to take them very low) look so it depends on how you want him to look. Eyebrow placement can make a big difference to the mood of the face.

    7. Double post .. sorry :doh

    8. The face looks awesome! Really it does. Did you use Sculpey? The flesh tone is nice, and I love the fact that it doesn't look like the rest of the 'mass production' heads!

On a side note, could you possibly do a tut on the eyes? It looks like it would rock to try! XD

    9. First off - Thank you all for your compliments and suggestions.

I have to say that the face on this boy, Liander, came out almost exactly how I wanted it. The nose comes straight from how I usually draw him. It's really long and kind of big for his face but it's perfect on him because it's just how I picture him looking. As for the shape of his head it is sort of a problem as far as the "finding a wig to fit" thing goes. I'll most likely just be making that custom as well though so it isn't so much a big deal. I'll just make it to fit him exclusively.

batchix & Kaye - So cool to have my guy be complimented by you two. You guys are awesome. :) I think I'm basically going to stick with what I've got as far as the expression goes though. I really don't want to mess him up.

Keanna - yup, I used super sculpey. My mother bought me 6 boxes of the stuff for my birthday last month and I already had two of them, so I've got plently of it to work with. lol

I suppose I might be interested in making a tutorial on how I made the eyes but wouldn't really be much of a tutorial. It really didn't take much to do but if anyone really wants to know.... :sweat

I'm hoping I get to start sculpting Li's torso tommorrow. *crosses fingers*

    10. agh he's too cute!!!!
wow...that's really clever for the eyes...beats my tin foil ones XD

    11. Definately starting to sculpt Liander's body tonight, so I'll post more pics soon :) (if anyone actually wants to see...)
