Hello, yesterday I've finished my first prototype of bjd using "Sincer" a kind of cold porcelain I can use with silicon moulds, I've found very difficoult to work with such small parts so I think I will not reproduce others from these moulds but I would like to try this tecnique for a bigger one (60cm or more). Any comments and critiques are really welcome, Thanks for looking
She is lovely! Did you want pointers on cold porcelain? I don't know about this Sincer brand, but the cold porcelain we use here in Brazil is very sturdy. I'm making a doll a bit larger than 60cm now (for many years actually.... I'm too slow u.u). Mine has a base made of a thin layer of papier mache covered with a clay made of wood dust and glue, under the cold porcelain. I'm betting it wouldn't break if I tossed it against the ground (but I sure won't try ^^!) Some parts of mine I had to increase from the wood clay base, so they are only cold porcelain. They aren't as sturdy but can be even more resistant than resin. It sure chips less. Cold porcelain is great for larger sculpts, because of that and for being cheap in large amounts. On the other hand, I'm quite comfortable with cold porcelain for smaller sculpts too. I've made faces at a size about 1/12th scale of a real head. The trick is using water, both for blending with your previous work and for keeping the clay malleable for a longer time. I use crochet needles and dental tools for sculpting tiny details.
She is a really unique beauty!! I'd be interested in seeing the packaging of the product you are using - I like the idea of using a cold porcelain though its somewhat hard to get pre-mixed material where I live.... I think perhaps the details you are concerned about aren't as visible to others, its only natural to be more critical of your own work - I think she is really really lovely and I honestly cant see that she is lacking at all
thankyou for comments and advices, this is the link of product I've used: http://www.flockcart.it/scheda.asp?id=155&bkpage=categoria_lista.asp?id=62#WebData/PRDS_1/P155/Image_1.jpg I love this site (lot of useful products), it's in Italian language but probably you can translate it with google translator tool.
I would not change a thing about this charming little creature. Can't help you with the technical issues as I've never used this material/process before (I use traditional ceramic/porcelain methods), but on the visual aspects of her existance: well done, a truly stunning achievement
