I am working on my Super Sculpy doll right now....I have this question that I have been wondering about for a long time, but have never heard anyone talk about before. I added some new sculpy inside the leg holes of the lower torso which has already been baked/hardened to make a nice circular socket for the thigh to sit in. But!!! I don’t even know if you can ADD onto a hardened piece of super sculpy. Does anyone know if this can be done? I heard you can boil SS, so I was thinking I could try to boil the hardened lower torso with the unhardened leg sockets in it, with the hopes that the unhardened SS will just harden and perhaps bond with what's already there...but will it work without ruining the work I’ve done? does that make any sense? I don’t want to try it until I know for sure. Some Super Sculpy expert advise would be appreciated! thanks!
I dont think it would be a problem to re bake sculpey, but you can look on the site, I think its..sculpey.com, they may have a factoid or somthing about it.
They usually tell you that you can add on as you please but remember that each time you bake it, you have to bake the new part and the older parts get baked again. If you are going to paint anyway, the color difference wouldn't make a difference but if you are using the super sculpey color, you will probably see a color difference. You can also use a thin coating of liquid sculpey or a PVA white glue (like Elmer's or Sobo) to hold the new part to the old when baking. Best of luck, Maria
It's totally fine! You might need to rough up the place where you're adding if it's very smooth, but other than that it's just fine. :3
It should be fine to add sculpey on and rebake. The only problems I have ever had with it is that when I add to concave areas, they seem to need a little bit longer to bake. Also, when you smooth your clay on, beware making bubbles under the surface(just as with natural clay, although the problems aren't the same) or it tends to cause moonies. <<
all you have to do is to first make sure the spot you want to add sculpey to is clean (free of oil, dust, dirt ect...), then firmly smear on a bit of sculpey on the spot so the clay you add will stick well. As long as you clean each spot and smear sculpey on each spot you want to add to, the added part will stick and stay great. Also, the more times you bake sculpey the better. It will just get more and more durable with every baking.
Rebaking super sculpy is fine, but it will darken the more you bake it, you can take a paper towel and soak it in water and cover the part that has already been baked and it won't heat up, and not darken too much more. If it is small parts you can also use a blowdryer and it will bake smaller parts of clay..though you must keep it at least 8" away and keep it moving, don't hold it in one spot or it will singe the clay. Also make sure you let it fully cool before handling or it could crack. I sculpt artdolls as a hobby {and to help pay for my dolls} Melanie
gee! thanks for all the great tips folks. I will try some of these suggestions (or combos thereof) and see how it goes this weekend. Here's hoping all goes well. i will post progress on this thread: http://www.denofangels.com/forums/showthread.php?t=47381
