Hi guys. I just received my unpainted minifee Iset Egyptian headdress but I had not expected them to send it with the gems glued onto the unpainted surface, which is a bummer because I wanted to paint it myself. I have some pics on my instagram if you don't mind taking a look. I'd like to remove these, I'm assuming they're placed with super glue? From what I can tell the crown is comprised of 3 pieces: the bottom feathered part, the snake/horns topper, and the clear feather plume. Ideally I'd like to take the whole thing apart. Do you think I could soak it in Windsor and Newton blush cleaner to dissolve the glue without damaging it? Thanks so much for advice, I don't wanna just go ham at it.
You could try placing the head piece in the freezer and then carefully chipping off the gems, I would be a little worried about soaking it in anything for too long. I’ve used the freezer method for small resin figures and it’s worked on them. Sorry if this isn’t much helpful, I hope you’re able to get them off safely!
Maybe cover them with painter's tape? They look like part of it...or might be too difficult to remove. I also think it looks beautiful as is on your photos. I would just tape off areas you don't want to paint and paint in sections. I know it won't be easy but then you don't risk breaking anything.
Don't remove the the gems. Use either masking fluid or a bit of the eye-putty / blue tack putty and cover them. When it comes time to peal it off after you're done painting, use an exacto knife to trace the edges and scrape the putty or masking fluid off. This is a typical method for artists who make art dolls with casted heads that have inset glass eyes. Fairyland's glues are heckin' strong and it would probably be better for the gems to stay as they are without risking the damage to both them and the resin parts. That's my personal suggestion. Respectfully.
Gluing the gems back in sounds like it might be more trouble than it's worth. Using some tiny bits of spare poster tack/eye putty and or knead-able eraser for masking might be the easiest way to go if you are using an airbrush or if you have a light hand. Paint-on masking fluid could also work if you need something that can stand up to a bit more direct pressure. Good luck with the project whatever you choose to do!
