I need some expert help. I just received an outfit I've been looking to buy for over 2 years - the Volks SD Boy Herbalist set. I paid twice the original cost to get it but when it arrived today every single piece smelled like a litter box. I had other people check it - just to make sure I wasn't crazy - and yes, it smells very much like cat urine. The seller partially refunded me some of the cost but now I need to figure out how to wash it. The pants also have some weird discolorations. Any advice on how to wash these items would be appreciated - I'm concerned about the velvet and fringe and metal decorations. 20221119_201336 by jessholy, on Flickr 20221119_201400 by jessholy, on Flickr And this is what the outfit looks like from when Volks was selling it: herbalistsdboywtb8800 by jessholy, on Flickr
I would soak them in equal part water and vinegar. Let it sit overnight. Than wash them by hand I’m not super sure if it’s safe to wash in the washer machine but if your not to worry about than do it. The stains maybe some baking soda
@ellie And you think the vinegar will be safe to use on the velvet material? I know I need to dilute it but I am super paranoid because of how much I paid. (Don't even get me started on how much I had to argue with the seller about the partial refund. I'm still upset.)
@jessholy I’ve used it on other fabrics and it’s been fine but I’ve never done it with velvet fabric. Also I forgot to mention let them air dry don’t dry them in the dryer
@ellie Thank you for the advice - I am definitely going to try it on the pieces that don't have velvet. I'll do more research for the velvet.
I know this may sound silly, but maybe you could see about taking the outfit to a professional clothing cleaners? Especially for the velvet pieces... One time I damaged and stained a very expensive doll dress... and I took it to a local clothing tailor and cleaning place and they repaired and pressed it for me. They thought it was kind of unusual but were kind and didn't charge a lot. Just a thought! Sorry about your experience, I hope you can get it cleansed!
@Dybbuk There are a few dry cleaners near me - I would have to take the pieces over and see if they would do it.
I've washed some doll clothes that smelled of cigarette smoke in my washer before by putting them in one of those zip up intimates pouches and washing them on delicate, then letting the pieces line dry on tiny hangers. So it is doable so long as you're careful. Be sure to test if the colors bleed beforehand though. Otherwise you can also use a tiny bit of mild detergent in a bucket or sink full of water and hand wash the pieces as well. I clean porcelain doll clothes this way because they are super likely to have color bleed.
@Cap'n Thank you for the advice. Right now, I am trying the 50/50 vinegar and water soak. I am keeping an eye on it for bleeding - it took quite a lot of water and vinegar to get them soaked so I will say Volks makes their clothes pretty water resistant.
If it still smells of cat pee when the vinegar/water soak is done, try an enzyme cleaner specifically for cat urine. (I used Nature's Miracle Cat Urine Destroyer a lot when my cat, in the last few years of his life, decided the edges of my bedding and any towels or clothes on the floor were a dandy spot to pee. Nature's Miracle has my full endorsement, but it does have a very distinct fragrance that you'll have to live with in exchange for getting rid of the cat pee.) You would probably have to start VERY light, possibly testing on an inside spot just to make sure it won't stain or discolor, but it worked just fine and behaved well on everything I had to wash with it. After letting the enzyme cleaner sit I would personally hand-wash, in barely lukewarm water with the tiniest smidge of laundry soap, one piece at a time just in case any dyes think about bleeding. Rinse, dry, reshape/iron if needed. Signed, someone who went through like three bottles of Nature's Miracle between their cat and a roommate's cat.
@Ferret-hime Thank you for the suggestion! What does it smell like? If it's floral, I can put up with that. But if it is more like a mothball smell, I might pass on it.
@jessholy It's kind of like a very strong clean/floral smell? I've never smelled anything quite like it but it does fade eventually.
@Ferret-hime I can handle clean/floral! I also have Oxiclean - do you think I should try that before buying the cleanser you suggested?
@jessholy honestly? i wouldn't waste the time/effort. I tried washing my cat-targeted clothes and bedding with other things before just getting the enzyme cleaner and it immediately knocked out the lingering odor that other cleaners didn't quite budge from the fabric.
I was about to pitch Nature's Miracle, or Allersearch Allergen Wash - spot test on the fabric before soaking, but you WILL need an Enzymatic Cleaner of some kind to get rid of cat urine stench, or anything else from animals. The Allersearch detergent is what I use as a laundry detergent on even delicate stuff, and so far it hasn't hurt anything. I use it to get rid of any dog dander, since I have a dog I'm sort of allergic to but refuse to give up. (Don't worry I'm in treatment with an allergist, and he likes this detergent approach)
Just to add another thought: You could try a hot stream device. I have one for ironing and a handheld one. While it is not a perfect method and you will have to repeat the process several times, the hot steam takes out smells and kills bacteria well, Especially for very touchy fabric like silk this is a life saver!
I have no advice, but a lot of sympathy: Sorry to hear that the clothes you got from a second hand dealer were in such poor condition. Very dishonest on the dealer's part, I think you deserve a full refund. If it smells like ammonia it could be a health hazard to even handle. There should have been a warning, or at least an attempt from the dealer to clean the clothes.
Well the vinegar rinse didn't work to get rid of the smell. But it did give me this evidence: 20221120_093840 by jessholy, on Flickr So I am going to see if I can find the Nature's Miracle liquid cleaner at the local Petco. @Ferret-hime and @Rosslyn - how much do you think I should add to water to try to create a soak? Based off of the vinegar soak, I do believe these clothes won't bleed otherwise I would have seen color in the water. @kelpie Thank you for the idea - not sure I have one...will have to look! @SneakyUnicorn I can private message you the details and get your opinion. I don't want to be mean and cruel but I am very upset that I am spending more money and time trying to get these clothes to not smell like urine than enjoying them on a doll.
Not sure this helps against cat urine but putting items in the freezer for a couple of days helps against a lot of odours, so maybe while you’re looking into enzyme detergents you may want to give this a try? It sure won’t hurt the items at all and if there’s other underlying odours (moldiness etc the freezer definitely works wonders - I saved a few vintage items I got off the bay like that and I am very scent sensitive). Other than this, oh my, I am so sorry you have to put up with this at all. How could the person not realise what they were selling you? Crossing my fingers tightly for you to find a rescue for your items, the outfit sure looks adorable on the advertisement pictures.
@Raffael Thank you for that tip! Should I put baking soda or powder in there as well? Right now, everything is drying after one round of Nature's Miracle 15 minute soaks and then rinse. I did do each clothing piece individually. Only the pants really bled any color. The vest and green coat had a yellow tinged water - not sure if that is color coming out or urine... I am doing the belt twice but so far, things are smelling better. I will have to wait till they are dried to know for sure. I am definitely going to include how long it took me to fix this when/if I post to buyer beware communities about this.
If you like I think baking powder won’t hurt (once everything is dry of course ) I did procede without any additional powder tho just because I had some items where it wouldn’t have been possible to get rid of all the powder again afterwards so I think you wouldn’t necessarily need to your progress sounds very promising so far I really cross my fingers you managed to save your beautiful outfit.
I forgot to do the lukewarm rinse with a touch of laundry detergent...I just did a lot of cold rinsing...I wonder if that's enough...but right now everything is hanging up drying and my hopes are high that I saved them.
Thanks @onlytheocean It's been saved through 48 hours of work and extra money to get it as back to normal as I can. The urine cleanser did remove the urine smell but I wasn't fond of the smell of the cleanser. So I just finished a light wash in Woolite with lukewarm water and then a cool water rinse. They are going back to air dry again. I did everything by hand so that I couldn't blame a professional cleaner or a washing machine. I think the red pants might not be a stained but it's more of a wear-and-tear pattern from how they were stored or how the doll was posed wearing them. If that makes sense. I can take new photos of them after they're done drying again to get more expert advice.
Alright. Round 2 of hang drying is done. They still smell like the urine cleanser a bit but it's not as harsh so I am okay with it. I will also let it air out for a few days to see if that will help. But here is the new issue. While cleaning the belt, this has happened to the metal elements: 20221122_185404 by jessholy, on Flickr 20221122_185352 by jessholy, on Flickr Should I use a soft toothbrush to try to clean off what is either soap scum? Or should I use a jewelry polishing cloth? I just need some advice on how to clean those bits. Miraculously, no other metal elements on the outfit had this issue!
Is that piece actually metal? This may be hard to do at such small scale. But if it is, windex and aluminum foil does wonders to clean rust and scuzz off of tarnished metal
@I<3MySD I'm not sure, but I did use a jewelry polish rag and white wine vinegar and that seems to have brought it back to a shiny appearance. The smell is gone but the discoloration/stain on the pants remains so I am not sure what to do about that or just live with it at this point. The seller has stopped answering my messages.
I'm glad you were able to shine it up! I'm sorry about the discoloration on the pants, and for the seller's lack of reply. That's really dishonest of them after sending such a damaged product! Could you perhaps add some patches to the pants? That's a tricky one! And keep your eyes peeled on Mandarake or Dollyteria for a replacement someday. When outfits get pieced out, they usually are really cheap!
Thanks. Yeah, I've posted on 3 doll feedback groups on Facebook to warn about them. They can still get my messages but aren't reading them. I think it has something to do with the material the pants are made out of. I did iron them so at least they are as crisp as they can be but I'm not sure how much more cleaning I want to do. I think finding a color match would be difficult to do a patch. I have kept my eye out on Mandarake - only one of this set ever passed through the website! I've never seen this set sold piece by piece though.
