Need advice on making faceplate system

Jul 8, 2015

    1. I'm working on very small heads - like 1cm-1.5cm - I want to make several faces and therefore have a faceplate system but I'm not sure how to go about it.
Originally I sculpted two heads and precut the faceplate/headback line and then baked (I use Super Sculpey). I'm guessing I didn't cut through enough because after baking I tried to cut the rest of the way through and ended up cracking and breaking my faces. It was very discouraging, it took several weeks for me to get those heads done.

But now that I'm back to square one, I don't really know how to do my heads so to incorporate a faceplate system. Should I make a headback first and use it to sculpt all my faces on? That seems like it would be difficult but is that how it's done?

I want to have all my heads cast in resin. So, qualityfunctionality is important!

HOW should I be doing this?

      Thank you

    2. wow that's tiny!

If you're eventually going for a faceplate system, then you will have no choice but sculpt on a standard common back sooner or later, right? In the meantime, maybe sanding the back of the head off after you bake would be easier than cutting it off. Also, as long as the time and temperature is reasonable, you can bake the face on top of an apoxie/magic-sculpt/epoxy back to solve some of the warping/fitting issues that arises during baking.

    3. Oooh, I appreciate that advice, yes, it makes sense!! I wouldn't have thought of the epoxy thing. Thank you
