here are two faces I'm working on. One is a male face and one is a female face. I just need opinions on how well or unwell I'm doing. I'm having issues with symmetry and things like one side of the face being thicker than the other.

Please help. Any advice is nice thank you.

I apologize that the pictures are not as clear as they could be my hands are very shaky when I took them.

    2. Very sweet faces. I like the proportions and the long noses. My only suggestion is the same one I give myself and anyone else: Try to get a pair of eyes in there to sculpt around as early in the process as possible. Good luck and keep going!

    3. I think that you've got a pretty good start here. The left one on the first picture looks calm and sweet, and the other a bit more mischievous. It is a nice variation.

To help with symetry, try sculpting upside down and/or fequently check your work in a mirror. It is much easier to see what things needs to be done that way. Keep checking your work from different angles while you work too. That way you can spot little problems much faster and nip them in the bud.
Penciling in a straight cernter line may also help. That way your eyes have something to "lean on" when trying to figure out exactly what needs to change and how.

I would also suggest trying to get a firm foundation right away. A core with roughly the right shape that you want the finished head to be, just smaller, is a nice start. That way you have a very good control over the thickness. If you start out with a solid base like that, you can simply make sure to add equal amounts of clay to both sides and that will give you a very good help with the symmetry.

Like Ghostdollie suggested it is a good idea to get something to use as eyeballs to sculpt around too. I usually use glass marbles in the same size (or slightly larger) as the eyes I want to use when the doll is done. But you can use anything the right shape and size, like large beads or wooden balls.
I make very small dolls, so the marbles needs to be embedded in the core, but for larger dolls you can sometimes get away with just adding them on the outside of the core.

It could be the camera angle, or that this is just the face part of the head, but the eyes seems to be a bit high up. A human face has the eyes close to the middle in height. You might want to look a little bit closer at that.

I look forward to see how these turns out. Like I said -a good start!
