Found a head I really like the look of, but it is large... I'd like a slim/"neutral" body, but larger bodies (that have a larger neck) tend to be very muscular. The bodies I do like have 10-11cm necks at best, while the head is listed as 13cm. So ignoring if the head might look proportionately off, I'm more interested in how bad the gap would be. So any pictures that could show me how it might look would be appreciated! (Would a "neck donut" make much of a visual difference?)
Different scale but I've managed to wing it with a 8.5cm neckhole on a 6.8cm neck (arguably a 2cm difference in 1/3 would look less bad to start with). I hot glue sueded the back of the neckhole to make sure there is less gapping near the front view/chin and added a leather washer to lift the head until the neck length looked better. It still looks a little bobble-headed but isn't terrible? I think? I feel like a lot can be saved with appropriate shoulder width/arms and hands proportions. It also depends a lot on what kind of a wig you're using because a long-ish cut can hide whatever gapping happens at the back of the neck. I can get you pictures of my hybrid monstrosity in the next days but depending on your gap-tolerance, there's a possibility for a presentable hybrid like this
Sorry, I didn't take photos, but I've put heads (male) on necks that were about a half to a centimeter to a centimeter smaller than the original. There's a gap, but usually only visible from below, so attention to posing and photo angles, as well as wig and clothing can ameliorate problems. IMO, it's harder to aim the other way, to put a smaller head on a bigger neck without doing some sanding. But much depends on the head too. A head with a jutting jaw or long face can look top-heavy while a head made for a larger body but with more "human proportional" smaller features might do fine on a smaller body. Cobaltconduct makes good points about the shoulder width - older bodies (before the explosion of 70cm and above) could be wider without heaping on the muscles. A donut can help where the hybrid neck is shorter and needs lengthening - it's easier to donut rather than have to build up the neck length - although someone good with apoxy could not only lengthen but widen the top of the neck (thinking of the oldest CP Delf dolls - both males and females had the same size neck hole, even though the girls necks were more slender and flared out at the top.) Hope you get some concrete pix soon to show you what we're only mentioning!
It'd be a very short wig.... Of course So my best best there would be a HIGH collar Yeah, larger heads tend to have chins/jaws jutting out quite a bit to further complicate things... But indeed, it is easier to mod a too large of a head than a too small one. I appreciate both your points though!
It helps proportionally to compare the shoulder width between the original body and this new one to see if it would look proportional. If the original body's shoulders look too small, then larger shoulders may help, or if the measurements are close, then it should look mostly ok, minus some neck gapping if you don't hot glue suede.
@Emmacandyapple That's a great point! But in my case it's an artist-head that has no original body :/
Ok, I've snapped some pictures! Acorn is a SDC Arashi on an old Dollzone 1/4 girl body. The neckhole is 8.5cm (seriously what did volks think?) and the neck is 6.8 or 7cm depending on where it is measured from. I put a blob of hot glue at the back of the neckhole so the front part of the head has less of a visible gap. The head needed to be lifted up so it doesn't sit too low on the neck. I cut a leather disc for that but hot glue and kips will do as well. Spoiler: Here are some views of the head bald Here it is with the leather disk - it still needs a bit of a trim. Spoiler: and here are some photos with a short wig Sorry for the messy hair I made sure to cut the back so it *just about* covers the glaringly obvious gapping. Here's a photo of the head on another body, with an even thinner neck but slightly wider shoulders: I don't know how helpful it is for you depending on how realistic of a doll you're thinking of hybriding - I guess I have a bit more leeway with the cartoony look that's blob-headed anyway (I think the shoulders could be a bit wider still so I'm going to layer some kips in the shoulder joints later on). I don't notice the gapping unless I really look at a low angle and the mobility is great thanks to sueding but of course YMMV depending on the shapes and angles of the head and necks you are looking at. Anyway, maybe it gives you some ideas at least
Thank you @cobaltconduct! The wig does wonders there! It doesn't look too bad for just under 2cm difference - gives me hope!
2cm difference is definitely less bad at 1/3 scale as well! I have hope in your hybrid, hope it works out like you wanted
