      here's a new girl I'm working on. She's only 6 inches from head top to crotch at the moment. Please excuse her wonkiness, I need to clean up her head yet. it's sort of lopsided and the chin is a bit big. XD The arm is just for position and size at the moment, not her real arm. She will not have bizarre nubs. X3;;

I'm thinking of making her an optional chest plate with wings. :3

I'm not sure if I'm going to cast her yet or not... It'll really depend on how she looks when she's done. I intended her to be something just as an OOAK, but I started getting attached to her. ._.;; it sucks because I hate using super sculpey for casting because it's hard to get smooth! Oh well. at least she's small so there's not a lot of surface area!

For this doll, since she was originally intended to be an OOAK, I "drilled" holes with an airplane drill bit before I baked her. I don't know the proper name for these types of drill bits, but they're extra long and the package said "Airplane Drillbit". It's probably about eight inches long. very useful for drilling doll parts. :3

    2. see you said little ....so Little and Batchix ...I had to come and see
      ...settles down ..to watch

    3. Batchix tantalising us all again with crumbs....*sits down next to Tinybear and offers popcorn*

    4. OoOoOO You know I love my android so I can't wait to see how this cutie comes out.

    5. Pass the popcorn please:) I know this will be a treat!

    6. Nice so far! I can't wait to see the final. What material are you using? :D

    7. <grin>

hey Batchix, how did you hold the drill level to drill the holes???? I have a 5 inch one I use sometimes, and my hands shake so much its hit or miss (literally <smirk>) as to whether or not I hit the blamed polymer....

she looks wonderful - can't wait to see her further along

    8. Funny you guys mention popcorn since that's what I was eating when I first looked over these replies. XD

Duckherd: I'm using Super Sculpey, but I normally use paperclay. :S

Patl: I just hold the drill bit in my fingers and twist. The clay's not baked so it's very pliable still. :3 then after baking I usually do the same thing, twist the drill bit with my fingers, until I'm sure that the hole goes all the way through.

I baked her head finally last night. I need to add more to the top of her noggin yet. :3

    9. well duh!!!

thanks Batchix, that makes much sense.

(wanders off to stare dim-wittedly at all those already baked limbs waiting to be drilled.

      sigh)

    10. Patl~ If you drill slowly you should be able to do it without shattering the limb. Or ask Don? He may now how to keep it steady. I know he drills a lot of the limbs for his dolls.

well guys... here are some more pictures of her. :3 She's coming along well, but I'm nervous about the whole thing. It's hard to tell what parts are lumpy and what isn't. Hopefully her adorable face will make up for her uneven hips. XD

I'm tentatively naming her Nansook. That's my mother's korean name(her american name is Rosina... which is italian. go figure). I was going to save it for a daughter... but uh, I don't think we're going to have kids. XD These guys are LIKE my kids, right?

Unbaked legs, you can see how I have them on the drill bits.

Now I ran into the snag of how to do the knees at this point, but I knew I wanted double jointed knees for her. So what I did was make the knees before I baked the legs. I have little molds I made of different sized round beads and I sort of compared the sizes to the knee till I found a good size. Then I lumped out a piece of clay in a rounded rectangle. I baked it like you would a bead on a long thick metal wire(it was smaller than the drill bits since I didn't have any more bits. XD). Once that was done I flattened the sides of the drill bit that would not face forward or back on the knee(I don't know how to give a direction there. :S). That way the knee part won't spin inside the knee. Your knee is a hinge joint, it only bends in one direction, not a ball joint like your hip or shoulder.

When that was finished I smoothed out the top and bottom of the knee with sand paper so that it was very round(the pierced part distorted a little). Then I took the legs and gently cut the knees in half and slid them off the drill bit. Before doing this I recommend sticking the super sculpey in the fridge for a bit to make it get really stiff. I scooped a knee-part shaped indentation out of the halfs, then I took the wire I used for the knee part and "strung" the knee between the two halves of the leg. Once it was like that I was able to press the leg back together around the knee part and have a perfect shaped leg! Then I baked it.

This is what it looked like with a minimum of sanding to the legs. Sorry she's glossy, I had just rinsed all the dust off her. Her thighs had not been shaped very well yet.

And here she is today! Excuse Kaz back there, she thought I was taking pictures of her. I've almost finished sanding and fixing the legs. She strung up with toothpicks at the moment. XD

her face is so cute. I really like how it turned out. I'll do the ears last so that they don't get broken in the meantime.

Her hip joints don't show much string, but they do allow her to sit and her legs don't spin. I'm not exactly sure how this happened. XD I need to find some hollow coffee stirers to cast her parts hollow with, a straw is a little too thick I think.

In a Bratz dress. Stretchy brats stuff seems to fit her well. I don't have any barbie stuff to try on her atm. 80's skipper stuff or kelly things might fit her. I think she's going to end up about 10 inches tall.

      exacto for height comparison!

well, I have a lot of sanding ahead of me... and of course making ARMS. and hands and feet oh God. *sobsobsob* I think I'll make her normal barefoot feet and mary janes. That way people don't have to worry if they can't find shoes for her. :3

    11. Very nice can't wait to see her finished.

    12. She's precious, I just looove her! You have amazed me yet again!

    13. She's really awesome so far, can't wait to see her finished. I admire you for working consistently on her. I started mine in August of last year and she's still limbless :(

    14. woot !! She looks so awesome. If you do sell them I'll have to have one !

    15. She's going to be so cute when you're done. It's fun to see the process. I'm making my own bjd right now..and the most fun is when they start looking like a real doll. I'll probably make a smaller doll next.

    16. Oooh, she's so cute!

    17. *shares out more popcorn and some hot choc.*

Fantastic, i couldn't work so small!
having enough trouble just with an msd head.

      she has a sweet expression
i just don't know how you managed those knees!
      so fiddly

    18. Chrystika: thanks hon!

      Miss_Pygmalion: Aww~ thank you! :aheartbea

Bruny: The limbs are so daunting! Getting the two sides to match is just nerve wracking! I can totally understand. XD

clayfaery: thank you! :D :aheartbea :aheartbea

Dianna: It is, totally. It's like watching something come to life! I think the most special thing is watching someone else play with and enjoying them. It's like watching your kid grow up. XD

      StephG: thank you sweetie! *hughug*

maggot: a lot of it is the tools... I made my own on top of the other stuff... XD

Does any one know anything about free video editing programs? If I can figure it out I'll do some video sculpting tutorials but I need to be able to edit them all together, you know? I'm on a PC...

    19. Cool! I can't wait to see her finished!:D

    20. I love the picture of her sitting with her head tilted.....

    21. Hey Batchix, congratulations! There's a full page (pg52), of Machina your Robot girl, in the 2008 Collectors Edition of Doll Reader Magazine!
      :sumomo::celebrate:sumomo:

    22. SharonPixie: Thank you! I'm excited too! XD I hope she stands okay!

Patl: thanks! She looks very interested in what's going on. :3

Bruny: Thank you!! I was really surprised that they used a big photo like that! Surprised and very very flattered. We're getting a really nice response from people about Machina and it makes me so very excited! :chocoberry

*scratches head* where was I? oh yeah, arms! Here's a more indepth look at what I was talking about earlier...

    24. Thanks for sharing this!! :)

    25. sharonpixie: np! hm, my photos are suddenly not showing up. hopefully they'll show up again in a moment because DOA just freaked out on me for a second. o_o;;

    26. Cool tut, thanks for sharing :) I'm so looking forward to seeing this little clay being evolve.

    27. I really want to do one myself but I don't have time :( . You should give classes. I would definitely pay for classes if you give them :)

    28. what a really great, clear illustration of doing the arm/elbow joint!

      really enjoying watching her grow...

    29. Thanks for sharing this - I suddenly feel the urge to start another doll project and try it out ;)

I love the way you do faces. This one looks so sweet and secretive.

    30. Hooray, sculpy joint tut! ^__^ Very clear, very nice, and your little girl is looking adorable!

    31. *blinku*

      O.O

*kidnaps batchix and sets to work in attic*

    32. Oh wow that's so awesome! :whee:

I hope I can get my BJD project started soon. I've been getting this intense itch to create something of my own. ^^

      Awesome work!!! :D

    33. That was a super little tutorial. NOODLY NOODLY NOODLEEEYYYY!!!!!

    34. Oh, her face looks so sweet! Love it! And that little tutorial was great; I've made a few dolls (one terrible first-try that was ridiculous in how horrible it was; she can barely sit, and a semi-decent, little tiny for my aunt), and I'd wondered about making a nicer joint. Thanks for that!

And she just looks so cute! ^^

    35. haha i came here because i saw the word "little" and i am making Popcorn as we speak, lol!

she is looking cute :) *settles down and offers Popcorn to all who want*

    36. O.O Ooooh a Tiny ^_^ Batchix ^.^ I so look forward to seeing how she is going to end up ^o^ you never cease to amaze me ^.^
*settles down with the rest and eyeballs the popcorn being passed around*

    37. Bruny: Thank you!

Sharonpixie: If I can find a publisher, I was thinking of making a book... I also might have a class at IDEX next year. LadySaiyuki had one this year. :3

patl: Thanks! I'm sorry I didn't have it when Darkmothflame was having problems with stuff. :S

zidora: THank you! You should! Everytime you work on stuff you learn something new. :3 I think I'm finally getting the hang of subility in my sculpts. XD

      Quill: Thank you!

      maggot: Only if you pay me in transformers. XD;;

ahyu: It's really fun to make your own... Seeing it come to life is so grand!

      Miss_Pygmalion: You have to move your arms like an octopus when you say it. XD;;

Quilibet: Glad it'll be helpful to you! With each part I learn a little bit more, even when I have to redo something. :3

annina: XD well I'm making cookies... I'll definately share those. X3

LadySaiyuki: X3 for a tiny... she keeps getting... bigger!

So I did some mock ups today... She fits in the Only Hearts Club doll clothing from target, but they're a bit snug. I got some of the Barbie Fashion Fever stuff as well, and those are just a little loose. because she still has toothpicks for feet I couldn't put the pants on her. XD I don't think the pants will fit... but the tops and dresses seem okay. With a little taken at the top the skirts would probably fit as well!

Looking at her tho... I think I'm going to have to redo the legs. They're a great shape and work well, but I think they may be too short. :S I'm going to futs around with what I already have and then we'll see. :3

She has both arms now and she's got the beginning of one hand with teeny fingers! i also shaped out the fingers for her other hand as well. SOON! @D@// I plan on working on her hardcore this weekend! Tonight I will be stringing and sewing, but saturday and sunday I will work on nansook and my mecha boys! GAHH! I WILL PREVAIL! X3 I had a nasty bout of depression last week that made it hard for me to finish anything. ugh. I hate that. >_< ;; I'm feeling better now, but guh. D:

      oh! and for some reason my computer isn't showing me any of my own images. so if a picture suddenly doesn't work, please let me know. I can't tell. ;~;

    38. She's coming along nicely! Thank you for the tutorial. I needed help sculpting arms, and this has really helped me out. I would defiantly buy a book if you made one, and I would also love to come to your class.

      good luck with sculpting!

    39. Oh it's looking so cute! Say this on dA, but I think I forgot to comment. ^^''''''' Anyways, loving the arm joint tutorial! Makes life much easier when you can actually look at something and see how it's done. ^^ <3

    40. She's looking so cute....XD Now I *really* want to try to make one...wish I had talent... XD

    41. That's a wonderful tuitorial Batchix. Lot's of great tips :)
      Thanks so much.
      :)
      Kaye

    42. kuroda emi: thank you! I need to figure out how to submit to a publisher... :S

Lady Thesta: thanks! I'm glad that it helps you out! :D

TopHatDown: thank you! it never hurts to try~~ :3

Kaye: thanks! :D I hope it helps people out!

My goal is to have her nearly ready to cast by the end of the week. SHe needs a lot of sanding done tho. I actually lengthened her legs by about half an inch after this picture. This is her in comparison to my Roxydoll Lucy.

I tried on some regular barbie clothes... they're big in the waist but fit okay on top- but the arms are a little slim for her. I think it'll be okay tho. I still stand by the Only Hearts Club doll clothes fit her perfectly.

    43. Oh she looks wonderful! :D

    44. I don't think I'll have my goal of getting her ready for casting by tomorrow... I think I may make her a new head. e_e;; this one just feels too big now.

      Measurements!

yay! she stands! Yes, she has large feet. the reason for this is so that she will stand better. I plan on making her shoe feet as well so that you don't have to worry about finding shoes that fit her. She'll probably end up with high heels.

Sitting. I need to fix the slots of her hips.

She can cross her legs! X3

From the side, she's rather flat!

So you can see her butt! She has to lean forward awkwardly here because the weight of her hands. XD

      Gosh the light is bright!

Omg! surrounded! That's masterpiece prime back there... he's HUGE. The chickie in the blue wig is my Narae, Locust.
      Thundercracker: "I'm HUGE!"

Self critique in photoshop here. I think I need to broaden her shoulders a little bit and fill out her hips and thighs a little.

I also think I may need to sculpt her a smaller head and hands. I don't want to since those are the three most fiddly parts to do, but I may have to. Opinions are very very welcome. :3

again, for some reason I still can't see my own pictures on my computer, so please let me know if a link isn't working!

    45. In my artistic opion, I do have to agree that her shoulders and her hips need to be a bit wider, her hands can also be a bit thinner as well.

I really like how the rest of her is comming out and I tihnk her head is fine.

    46. Hey Bats, I don't think her head needs to be any smaller, but her arms seem to be little thick in relation the rest of the body. Her shoulders are a bit broad and her hips somewhat narrow so she could easily be a little boy or girl. If the hands seem big you might be able to just sand/shave them down a bit to make them smaller and slimmer. Overall she's looking good, really cute;)

    47. Awww she's sooo sweet! I like her head that size. She seems like a sweet little girl. I agree about her hips needing to be just a teeny bit wider and her hands seeming a little large. But I think her shoulder width and head size is fine. How tall is she again? She looks so itty-bitty next to Thundercracker!

Edit: oh, she's next to a measuring tape....... please disregard my stupid question about her height..... ;;>.>

    48. i agree with Twigling, i think that shaving down the hands would be a good thing to do.
      She's looking so lovely ^^

    49. Yea, I don't think anything is wrong with her head either. I do agree that her hands could be a little smaller though. ^^;

::Edit:: I just really noticed how much larger Machina is compaired to her! o_o; (lol *slow*)

    50. she is so cute *wants to hug her* I agree her hands are a bit to big, every thing else seems fine to me.

    51. I actually really love the big hands and feet. She reminds me of Namine from Kingdom Hearts 2. X3

    52. [IMG]

thanks for the input everyone! I did some sanding and shaving to her arms, made new smaller(they're still very rough) hands, made her a wig, gave her larger boobs, and filled out her hips, thighs and calves. One calf is still slightly thicker than the other. Oh! and she has ears and her head cap screws on now. :3

Hopefully I'll be able to start casting her in a week or two. It depends on what else I have going on with clothing I'm working on. <3

    53. starts more popcorn ...
-crunch ...crunch ..crunch ....I always eat faster when I am exited

LOVE her ...love the size of her feet and hands . ...crunch ....crunch ....crunch
      passes around the popcorn

    54. Oh, she looks so lovely. :D I really like her new hands, the old ones seemed to not fit her well... but these new hands are just right! Her hips and thighs looks much better, she seems more womanly now.

    55. She looks so cute! I really love the thrid picture of her... X3 And I love how her hands are somewhat cupped

    56. I love the new boobs XD. She has such a sweet face. I really hope you decide to to share her with BJD-dom. I would much enjoy letting her ride around on my stuffy squirrel!

    57. Awww.... she's just darling! I love the improvements! She looks fantastic!

"I am Nansook of The Super Fluffy Hair. You may adore me now." >w<

    58. She's got the combo-look of sweet and sexy. I like all the improvements you've made on her and can't wait to see her casted with a face up.

    59. *jumps on the bandwagon...just a lil late* Looking awesome! I can't wait to see her cast! All of the option parts sound interesting. What type of wings would she have?

Also their getting lil'er and lil'er! First it's only your big boys then an msd girl then the mech boys. And now lil Nansook! When will there be a super tiny?!

    60. That's it, I'm watching this thread! XD I thought I had already! She's looking soooo cute! Jazz is still just a head and a couple of joints that I think might be too long. >_>;;; So yeah, D'OH! XD

It's kinda sad making him now, though. ._. The kitten who was named after the same Transformer as him died last week. TT_TT So yeah, every time I think about working on him more, I'm reminded of my kitteh. *shrugs* ohhh well. v_v
