OT/General NaNoDollMo, anyone?

Oct 28, 2013

    1. So, as some of you folks probably know, every November is NaNoWriMo, in which a whole bunch of people write (or at least attempt) a 50k novel in a month. I've participated a couple of times, though I've never 'won.' I'd be trying again this year, except I really want to finish Kitpandi. So a friend of mine suggested 'something like NaNo, but with dolls.' Which I thought sounded awesome. :D

Of course, part of the fun of NaNoWriMo is the sense of camaraderie, in which everyone is doing this crazy thing together. Soooo... anyone want to join me for NaNoDollMo? :XD

You can set your own goal, but I suggest it be measured in 'hours spent sculpting,' since another great part of NaNoWriMo is having a specific numeric goal that you're making measurable progress towards every day. Personally my goal is going to be 50 hours, although I'll be trying to put in at least two hours a day, to have a buffer against missed days.

So, yeah, that's what I'll be doing with my free time this November. How about you? :))

    2. Count me in. I have a couple learn-by-doing projects in my list that're just perfect for nanodollmo!

    3. I wish. Alas I don't have enough free time for either event. It's a really fun idea though!

    4. Yay penguu! I'm glad I won't be the only one. ^_^

Sorry you can't play, Spark... maybe next year!

    5. I'm contemplating an ecorche project, to learn all the (superficial) muscles once so that future projects will have a better foundation.

    6. Oh, what a great idea!!!

I want to do that since I'm a huge procrastinator and this way I might just accomplish my goals! :)

Morgan, so you'll be working 50h on finishing your Kitpandi this november?

I think I'll steal your idea and also set a goal of 50 hours (that seems like a lot to me!), but I'll probably have to start a new project because this one is nearly finished or maybe I should invest this time in learning how to make clothes, so my dolls would have proper clothes to wear...

    7. Penguu: That sounds really cool! Would you do a digital sculpt, or a physical one?

Wilga: Awesome! I look forward to seeing whatever you decide to work on. :)

And yes, at least the first portion of my 50 hours will go towards finishing Kitpandi. I probably won't need the whole month to get her ready to print, though, so after that I'll have to come up with something else to work on while I wait for Shapeways to print her.

    8. Great idea! I too would like to see your Kitpandi finished :D Definitely joining in. I think I'll try my hand at an anthro doll.

    9. Morgan,
I think digitally would be easier because I can just download a skeleton and stretch it to the shape I need. Making a skeleton with clay, in real life, might take up the entire month just by itself, so that will have to wait till another day.

Plus, in Zbrush there's the Ryan Kingslien ecorche file you can use as a learning tool. It's not very pretty, but it does have each muscle in their own subtool so you can isolate use to figure out all the insertions and placements.

    10. I would dearly love to follow this. I have seen some amazing projects birthed by events such as this. My four month crush on Fusilli proved I cannot produce anything valuable under pressure, but I would happily cheer others on.

    11. Sailor: Awesome! I'd love to see you do an anthro doll. :))

Penguu: That does make sense. I'll have to take a look at that file myself at some point, that sounds really helpful!

Glyndon: Encouraging onlookers are certainly welcome!

Everyone: Two days 'til NaNoDollMo! :))

That said, November 1st is my sister's birthday, so that may end up being one of my skipped days.

Edit to add: Oh, but I'm forgetting the fine NaNoWriMo tradition of starting at midnight! I think I'll plan an caffeine-fueled and probably inadvisable late-night sculpting session. :XD

    12. Are we going to all post in this thread, or start new ones? All in one thread could be very lively and nice.

    13. Perhaps someone could post one thread for all of us in the WIP section (Morgan, if you please, since this was your brainchild?)

    14. I think I will join in on this....I have 3 dolls I want finished and this should be a really good motivator :D

    15. I'd like to join in too... Although I may spend the time on concepts - drawing and planning - as I may not be able to get any sculpting done.

    16. sailor: I'm on it -- thanks for the suggestion!

cheshirepanda: Awesome! Looking forward to seeing what you're working on these days.

aneemal: Glad you can join us! If it's doll-related, it's fair game. :)

    17. I am definitely going to try this! I need to get started on my second doll! woo

    18. Maybe I should join too, I want to finish my doll but I've had the project on hold for months now... I'd really love to make the time and finish!

    19. Glad you're jumping in, Leo and Yukamina! Hope to see you in the WIP thread. :)

    20. So, will this NaNoDollMo be happening again this year?

    21. I hope so, I'd love to participate. It would give me the kick in the pants to start sculpting again. :)

    22. I'll join if it's happening! :D

    23. I'm not usually one to join things. . . but I might like to give it a go. :) I stumbled upon an idea, a 1/3 scale African Grey parrot (my own "Alex Project" if you will ;)). There are other in-scale pets. . . so why not a parrot? *laughs* It's probably crazy but I still want to try. :XD
