"NANA" the Lioness** Sky doll on pg 11**

May 21, 2011

    1. OO i totally forgot to ask, ok so i apoxied the makeshift head-cap back on to the head because i didn't like the shape or size of it. I know nothing about casting or mold-making but is there a way you could just make a mold that creates its own head-cap? Like a two part mold that is seperated at the line where you want the headcap to be or something? Does that make sense?

Im also wondering about the inside of the head. How do you get all the eye sockets and grooves and stuff in it? Do you have to sculpt it all? In which case you would have to make the insides of all the limbs and stuff smooth?

    2. shes going so well lb. I guess you could create a 2 part mould where you want the headcap to split. I have seen a tutorial where people then put clay in the mould and then poured the glove insert silicon. I will see if I can find it. So the inside of the head in that case was sculpted by that clay. But you have to sculpt it in at some stage, otherwise you cant cast it. For the headcap its more important for smoothness because we all see inside the head regularly, but th einside of the limbs is not so important, you cant see it. I wish I had spent more time on making the inside of my girls head smoother, so it cast nice and smooth.

    3. Thanks glimmer!

So you think i should spend some time making the inside of the head smooth heh? I guess just add some apoxie and even it out? Shouldnt be too hard but i guess that means i'm going to have to cut the head open again.. hmmmm. And i still dont understand how to put the grooves and magnets and such into the head. Anything you can add about that?

      Thanks again glimmer!!

    4. Wonderful face!! Love the expression! Body is looking good.It looks like her breast are a bit different from shape...but I lack in seeing symmetry...so I could be wrong.

    5. No. your most definitely right. I cant seem to get the boobs to be the same! Ill have to spend more time on that area lol

    6. ...with the neck thingie, do you mean this kind of thing? :

I am trying primering now too... I think your idea with the gesso is cool!

    7. Yea, thats what i mean!! hahaha. I dont know what you would call that.. the neck i guess lol. WHat do you think?

    8. Arms hands and some feet

Here are some more progress pics. I just made the rough forms of the arms out of apoxie sculpt. I started on the hands but they're not even close to being done. I made a pair of human feet out of super sculpey firm and i made a pair of paw like feet out of a mix of the two. The lion feet arent don either because i ran out of apoxie half way through making them :/

I also made some slight adjustments to the torso joints and shape

You'll notice that the legs are longer and that they flare out at the bottom?? Well that was kind of an idea that i had that i still havent worked out. I dont yet know if they're going to stay like that or not but if they do,it means that i will have to make another pair of feet :(

I didnt post pictures of the hands because they look really awful right now but hopefully i can get them done soon an show you guys :)

Thanks for looking! (once again, critique is welcomed:))

    9. The feet are looking good! The human ones are so detailed, really cool! And I am really curious how the paw feet will work out for you ^^ Also I like the new leg shape, it has something very graceful... maybe you could make alternative lower leg pieces so you can still use the beatiful feet you made?
Yes with the neck thingie... I guess there is simply no word for that xD

    10. Thanks dollblue!!

I too am curious to see how the lion feet work out. Right now they look like Mickey Mouse gloves hahaha.

And yea, i think i am going to have to make an alternative piece for the lower leg. Ahh jeez, more work :P

So about the "neck thingie" do you think i need one? Did you put them on your heads?

      Thanks again!!

    11. P.S that drawing is so cute hahaha it made me literally LAUGH OUT LOUD. Thanks for that :D

    12. Love her feet!!! Her body is coming along beautifully.

    13. Thank so much!! Yea, i decided to give her chubby feet hahaha

    14. Well, I am not always putting a neck thingie on the necks, it depends a bit on the head shape. if the back of the head is big enough, usually the head is balanced enough to keep positions without the neck thingie, the stringing keeps it in place. Sometimes I make a neck thingie to keep the head more "bowed" forwards. With a neck thingie, the head will be limited in its movement to the back, though! I guess it is both possible ^^ (and the drawing... :XD well it was just a speed scribble... but I am glad you like it :)))

    15. Hmmm Im not too sure about it then.. Maybe ill post a profile view of her head and see what everybody thinks?? Thanks for the help!!

    16. Nana

So i havent really done that much but i did make the cuts for the joints and did a half test string so i though i would post some pics

And now i have to start on the joints and to be honest, i dont even know where to begin. I made the cuts about a week ago now and ive wanted to work on her but i just dont know what to do!! lol

Oh well, im sure ill figure it out eventually, i think im just scared of messing anything up!!

OO and i've given her a name FINALLY. Her name is NANA. There are many reasons why i chose that name but one of the more superficial is my love for the manga hahaha

Anyways, thanks again for looking and any critique is welcomed!!

    17. Her face is so expressive. That is a really lovely sculpt.
I love the proportions on the body, too.

    18. Thanks so much :)

    19. Nana is soo elegant..:love I can't wait to see her finished.
I have a question though the thing that made her face gray??

    20. Thank you!!

And first i used automotive spray primer that i bought at the hardware store but the stuff was too thin so i covered it in Gesso. The gesso was white though so i mixed a little black acrylic paint to make it a grey color :)

    21. I see:). I was asking because I have the krylon primer but once i sprayed a tiny bit it just won't spray anymoe:(. I might have to try that as well, that's really clever :))

    22. Sky doll Inspired head

So i was at Daiso the other day ( a japanese 2 dollar store) and they happened to have this stuff called "stone clay". It was only 2 buck a package and it looked alot like la doll so i picked up two packages of the stuff.

I did a little test to see what it was like and it was very close to a paper clay only a little bit more gritty. It dried in about the same time, you could still carve from it, it dried strong and it softened with water.

SO i was pretty stoked that i had found a cheap alternative and i wanted to try it on something a little more substantial, hence, this new head i made.

Its based off of the character "NOA" from the comic "SKY DOLL"... Dont know if you guys know it but its my all time fav.

Its still suuuper rough and im not happy with the lips but I havent decided if it actually looks like Noa or just another doll... What do you guys think?

This is Sky doll for those of you who arent familiar

As always, thanks for looking :)

    23. a small thing~ She looks like she's sucking in her cheeks a little while pursing her lips, especially in the 3/4 view~ Not sure if you were going for that~ Otherwise, great work~ I like the eyelids especially

    24. Thanks!

And yea, i think that was a result of over sanding, thanks for pointing it out!!

    25. I recognised her before reading your description, so I guess her likeness is pretty good already. <3

$2 is cheap and it looks like it is pretty similar to paper clay. Does it also sand as easily as paper clay? (I'm also looking for a more budget friendly alternative to paper clay.)

    26. It looks exactly like her,

    27. Wow, I love skydoll, and this looks fantastic.

    28. Thanks guys!!

@Arabidopsis: Yes, you can sand it, carve it, its pretty much works exactly like paper clay but i think its a little less strong. Another thing i noticed is that the inside of the head turned out to be "flaky". I think i might have to go over it with a layer of apoxie sculpt but it still cuts my costs quite a bit :)

    29. Oooo, I love the new head! She looks great! @u@

    30. Oh wow! Your skydoll head is beeaaauuutttiiifulll! I love her big, round eyes, she's so lovely!!

I'm so jealous, cheap clay! Daaaamn youuuu!

    31. Thank you!!!!

And i wouldnt be too jealous, the more i work with the clay, the more i realize why its so cheap!! Still gets the job done tho so i guess thats a plus..

    32. I Just found SQUISHY clay at my local dollar store. I'M SO HAPPY, KAY?

Be right back, i'm having fun sculpting various squishy things forever.

    33. Is that the colorful bubbly stuff?!?!?

    34. SQUISHY clay?????????

      It sounds Gross. :p

      SQUISHY clay........???????

      Who makes it?
      What is it made of?
      What are the properties?
      Feel?
      Drying time?
Does it need to be sealed before molding?
Is it compatible with silicone rubber?

How does it compare to water clay, epoxie clay, oil clay, or polymer clay?

How do you use it to make a BJD?
      :)

    35. I dont think you can.. If im not mistaken its kinda like play doh right?
I love fiddling with that stuff :D

    36. Torso

So i decided to keep going with this head because i need a break from Nana and her endless stream of problems

Ive only done a rough shape of the torso and just from looking at the photo's i can already tell that i didnt make her boobs big enough.

Im trying to follow the character from the comic book "sky doll" as closely as i can, i must say tho that it has been very hard to make something 2-d into 3-d!!

Also, in the comic she is a doll (hence the title) so she has joints and such but i dont think they would work for a BJD so i have to figure out a way to keep them in the design but work them around the joints... Ughhh

Oh yea, i also made some slight changes to the face (mainly a bigger bottom lip)

Anywhoo, here are the pictures :)

CRITIQUE IS WELCOMED AN WANTED!!! :)

    37. I really like how you did her face. The expression and styling... nice.

    38. ThanK you!! But I'm really just copying her from the comic so the credit isint mine ^^

    39. love all your work so ya know (and I want a lion if you ever cast her ;0; she is so soulful just <3).

At first I thought you could bring out the chin on this girl, but I'm not familiar with sky doll so went and looked it up and actually it looks like you've got her spot on, the likeness is amazing, the chin too, it's an interesting style. The lip looks better now that you've filled it out, the nose is perfect and the eyes look great too, the shape of her head is just so, very lovely. In the face-on photo above it looks like the right side of her face as you look at it is a bit fuller than on the left side, I like the fuller side better. And possssibly under the chin could be a bit sharper? I'm looking at this pic as reference: http://media.comicvine.com/uploads/1/15530/390776-21593-130451-2-sky-doll_super.jpg

But that depends on how the head connects to the neck. And I still don't know much about this character so don't listent o me if you know better! Anyway she looks awesome, I'm excited to see updates :)

    40. Thanks for the pointer to Sky Doll !!! Fab.
I found a copy of numbers 1 to 3 at the local comic book store today.
Spent the rest of the day reading it, and enjoying the art.

      Good luck modeling her.
      :)

    41. Crowtree: Thank you so much!! This means a lot coming from you and your talented self :). And i think we're going to have to organize a little tradsies if you ever decide to cast your amazing creations (especially your man, beautiful!!)

I was thinking the same thing about making the chin sharper but i haven't yet been able to find a way to do that without loosing too much of the jaw line.. But it is definitely on my to do list :)And thanks for pointing out the cheek issue, i just fixed it.

I haven't decided how majority of the jointing is going to work, including the neck. Im kind of putting off the inevitable because its going to be really hard to make the joints work and still keep to the styling of the character.. uuhhgg.

Kwmelvin Glad you enjoy the comic!! Like i said before, its my all time favorite. I just love the coloring and the styling, plus the storyline is amazing. And thats why i wanted to see Noa in 3-D!!

    42. Shes cute lb!

    43. Thanks glimmer :D!!

    44. More progress pics :)

I forgot how much easier it is to work with paper clays!! Not to say that i still dont have many problems but the stuff is just so easy to sand, i love it!!

OO and the arms and legs are still really rough so dont pay too much attention to those... And sorry for the awful body shots, my camera is being stupid lately.

(sorry for rambling) And just so you know what i did, i made some more alterations to the face, cut the waist joint, changes the hip sockets, made the arms and legs, changed the neck and the back face plate.

      Now for the questions

Do you guys think that the head is too big for the body?

Should i keep trying to make her look like the character or should i just say f*ck it and do what i want... (cuz thats what my hands have been trying to do but i've had to restrain them)

      Are the boobs TOO big?

      Thanks for lookin guys :)

    45. I think she fits the comic cover you posted pretty well, actually? And if you check her proportions internally, it works out, except maybe the length between her collarbone (the dip where the two bones meet) and the sternum's tip (the part around the bottom of the boobs)...that distance is usually a bit longer, but I've known people who compress that distance in their drawings, so...so...how does it look to you?

Tell me dahhhhling, when are boobs too big, eh? 8DDDDD

The boobs may look a bit big for how close together they are and how high they are on the chest. As a thought experiment, imagine if you lengthened the distance between the collarbones and the tip of the sternum just a smidge, as well as widen the whole thing, moving the boobs apart and a bit lower to match everything...would the boobs still look too big to you?

    46. I think I like the first set of boobs better. She is a boobalicious character but the first boobs seemed just right. I liked the space between them. You might want to lengthen the torso a smidget, just a smidge where you separated the chest. Maybe widen the torso underneath her chest to her hips a smidge too. Just a smidge! And last but not least, she was your inspiration, I think she's awesome, but go ahead and say f*ck it and let her become who your hands want her to become. It's a lot more freeing that way. You may get frustrated trying to make her look EXACTLY like Noa. She can be inspired by Noa, but it excites me to see what your hands will do without the restraints.:D

    47. @penguu: I actually think it looks right according to the pictures of her but not for a normal human being.. and thats where the problems lie... I still havent decided what im going to do with her but i just started a new head so maybe ill come back to her in a couple of weeks..

@dajzhavu: You liked the first set of boobs better? I think i like the size of the first ones but i think these ones suit the sculpt better. That is, if i am going for the exact copy look. And like i said before, still havent decided what i shal do.. **SIGH**

    48. A couple of little updates

The first is i made a new head that happens to be my first guy, whoo hooo! I still have A LOT of work to do on him but i primed him because i was having a hard time seeing the details in white. He is inspired from another character in sky doll called "Miracle genie" although he's not an exact copy.

      Here he is :)

I also gave NANA a new pair of legs. She looks alot skinnier now because of them and the boobs that i made smaller and im not sure which way i like her better.. she looks really young like this. Anywhoo, here she is

And as for Noa, her torso has been re done so im just working on that righ now, hopefully i'll have pictures up by the end of the week.

      Thanks for lookin :)

    49. Just a quick little update. I ended up making her hips wider and i think it looks much better this way, The legs still need a ton of work so dont pay much attention to them. I also shortened and thickened the neck a smidge.

      As always, thanks for lookin^^

    50. Wow, the lioness is even more graceful than she was ^^ And you are making Noa! That is... fantastic! *loves Skydoll*

    51. Thanks dollblue :D!! Yea its been really fun making Noa so far. Its quite difficult to make something 2d into 3d but its kinda fun at the same time :)

    52. I can't see the pictures =/

    53. i can´t see any of the pictures, why? :(
