Naming your dolls

Apr 17, 2022

    1. {laugh!} My husband has been responsible for the names some of my poor (off topic) dolls ended up with over the years, but that's why "Scary Mary" and "Dolly One-Leg" are among those names... (No, she doesn't just have one leg, she has two - you had to be there - She's the leader of all my dolls and stuffies, and had a fan-following of her own among historical reenactors for a while).

    2. im so bad at naming things, i can whip up a full OC in 5 minutes aside from the name. my Mnf mirka went by Nameless for a while thats how bad i am at names lol

    3. Some of my dolls are characters from a RPG my best friend and I did years ago, as well as some of my D&D characters, so their names were foreordained. My other dolls generally tell me their names. Sometimes it takes a while. And one of them actually insisted on a rename not too long ago.

    4. Since I'm planning on making my OCs to doll form, they are based off of them. I am quite bad at naming characters and sometimes look online at a list of names to choose from. It's what I actually did with some of my OCs at least.

    5. l just trend to go with what is linked to the myth/ect

like my fairy queen character name is stolen from the play and such

    6. I usually have somewhat of a hard time with doll names.

Usually, i try to make it relevant to their story and their country of origin, though. So it ends up being a somewhat classic name for the country they're from.

But it has to "sound", and "feel" right. So it's sometimes tough.

I usually do some research online, and ask people who might know more about my doll's "country" or the fantasy theme it may be based on.

    7. I keep the sculpt names most of the time. Sometimes they get a shortened version or variation of the sculpt name. I only have a small amount of dolls that I changed completely.

I found the name Raven Valentine (Ringdoll Moyu) on a tomb in St. Louis Cemetery NO. 1 in New Orleans when I used to live there. The name always stuck with me, because it's a pretty awesome name. When I saw the doll, I had to get him, and I knew I had to give him that name.

I have two ⅙ Dollzone twins Domino (Dollzone Daomiao) and Solitaire (Dollzone Yo-Carter) The ended up being named after games because I already had a Dollzone Carter named 'Carter' only my little Yo-Carter is a winking one - so Solitaire one eye, and Domino seamed to complement that and is close to Daomiao.

Trinity got his name because I was only going to have three 70cm+ dolls and he was the third one. The only three 70cm+ dolls didn't last, but he kept the name.

Luna got her name because Loong Soul Wei Yue Yan Dan was a Lunar event doll and Yue means Moon.

Otherwise unless the doll just screams their name at me, the sculpt names are just as good of a name as any other name.

    8. My very favorite doll is named for my grandpa. I have a few with 'regular/plain' western names, a couple for favorite fandoms/characters, a set of my girls are named for historical women. One of my SDs got his from a joke I made about him before he arrived, and several of the kiddos are named for favorite songs.

Then there's the dolls that just yell their name at me before or after they arrive & I can't tell u where those come from bc it won't be something I was thinking to name them at all

But I do keep a running list of interesting/nice sounding ones that I hear or run across to pull from if needed.

    9. It's a mix for me...
Some (like Tyran, Ennara, Kevin, Talen, and Serafina) were named after existing RPG characters from a former campaign that became a series of stories.

Some (Zenobia, Ariadne, Cordillia) were named for newer characters that joined the cast and then were shelled.

      Some have names with meaning.
Largo was named after a Bond villain
Pascal from a character in the old Beauty and the Beast TV series
Huckleberry from the line Val Kilmer would say in Tombstone
Waldo after Where's Waldo because his shipping went off the reservation for almost 2 weeks
Sir Hissalots is a reference to a certain early rapper
Hammy Sagar is a reference to singer Sammy Hagar... but he's a pig boy, so...
Brinks is in reference to one of my favorite female singers; Maria Brink
      etc.

The rest are mostly just names I really liked or made up on the fly (Wixxys, Frescwyn, N'Zyri, etc.)

I'm still working on names for my newest ones.

    10. Honestly, since I buy a doll just for the doll itself, I just look at them and a name pops out to me from somewhere. All of my dolls have been named purely on instinct lol. So I currently have a mix of western names and Japanese names within my group. Then I get more fancy with the last names and/or middle names. It's fun to work out!

    11. I'm a long-time tabletop RPG player and GM... Naming things is an old and hard-won skill.

Most of my crew are the resin avatars of tabletop characters and NPCs, or roleplayed MMO toons, so in a sense the naming work for them was already done. I knew who they were going to be before I got them.

Others, though, are characters specific to the dolls only and *don't* have RPG counterparts (Most of the Celestial Bureaucracy and Turtle House gang, the Montanari's modern magi-), and for that bunch I tend to pick names after they've arrived and I've had some time to tinker around with them. If they're part of a group with a "theme" coming up with a name is a little easier... All five of Gaia's godbeasts have bird names, for instance (Crow, Falcon, Kingfisher, etc) while all of the staff of the Division of Endings went Egyptian (Anubis, Ma'at, Eset and so on-)... But otherwise, I just try out different ideas and see what fits. Sometimes that results in something very "normal" (I'm looking at you Daniel.) and sometimes it doesn't. (*pats Cloud Mirror on the head*)

    12. I have a really hard time naming my babies. Some will instantly tell me their name and others came very slowly. My holy grail doll for 11 years still remain nameless. We just cannot came up with a name that suits her. I wanted a perfect name for her, she is my holy grail after all.

    13. I'm struggling with names for my dolls lately. For some reasons they prefer names like: "maleństwo" (the tiny one) or "Mroczny pan" (The dark Lord), or "podgrzybek" (bolete) XD

    14. I love naming dolls, and mine have gone through a few different names since I'm more likely to remake their character than sell the doll.

Bobobie Pandora: Agent 'M' Oakland. M started with two different names, one was Marah (cause that was my main RP character), and then Emily because I wanted a high school character to dress up and build a story around. So her name was Emily Miller an American foreign exchange student who learns about Japanese culture through her story. While I liked the character, the story didn't last so I gave Pandora a new character, which is my Hellboy OC. 'M''s real name is redacted because it's embarrassing, her parents were hippies who thought naming their child Mystical Moonbeam was a great idea. I gave her the last name Oakland because the Americanized German name fits her backstory.

Asleep Ediolon Milkshake: Yoko. Yoko was from Emily's story and was the daughter of the family Emily was staying with. I named her Yoko after a friend I had from Japan and the character hasn't changed since she's my troublemaker.

DollFamily H DuanYu: Shin. Shin is also from the Emily story and I picked the name because I was obsessed with the Manga Gokusen and the male lead's name was Shin.

Illusion Spirit Minos: Quin. Quin has gone through a few changes like M. He was originally known as 'The Shrine Spirit' because he was part of Emily's story. When that scenario lost my interest I started to look at the doll and wonder what other character he could fit. Quin came from a world of warcraft roleplay where one of my monster player characters had an adopted son. I picked the name Quin out of thin air because the character was meant to be nameless... And now he's a fixed feature in all of my stories. I'm debating about changing his name as well again since I want to give my dolls a unified story again, so I'll have to play around. He might stay Quin, just be in the modern day dealing with Yoko, Shin, and M can be the paranormal agent keeping tabs on people.

Most of my stuff comes from the stuff I write, and my best advice is to do one of two things. If it's a fantasy character, speak gibberish and then google the stuff you make to make sure it's not offensive in another language. Two, think about the character's background. Are their parents 'normies' who would name their kids boring names (Like Emily), or are they different than typical society and name their kids something strange (Like poor M). Using census records I look up when they could be born and then ask how original the parents are with naming their kid. At least that's how I do it in my writing.

    15. I named my MiniFee Hwayu "Constance" because I felt like an elegant and classic name would suit her. There's also the pun being that she's immortal because she's a vampire, thus the "Constance" of her existence.

    16. When I name things, I tend to just go with what sounds nice and seems to fit the character. Sometimes I'll look at the actual meaning of names too. To get inspired I usually scroll for hours on those baby name websites lol

    17. My Zach was named before I got him as he's an OC I love dearly and was designed with said OC in mind (he's a Makie!)

My little Hujoo Freya needed something sweet and cute like her, so I trawled baby name sites until I found "Yukiko" after searching for names meaning "white" (cuz she's the white version. I'm original) and she became "Child of the Snow" in Korean (since she was "born" there!)

Doll!Sans has been giving me trouble though
I made a little shortlist of favourite names but none of them really suited him.
I called him "Dominic" for a while and liked it a lot, but then some UK politician was in the news for being a twat and of course, his name is Dominic. So that was out.
I'd been trawling through baby name websites, but didn't see anything I liked. I tried font names as a nod to Sans but the only one I thought might be nice (Roman) just... wasn't his name. Fantasy name generators just made me laugh, names of bones were a no (some of those would be considered doll abuse!) my old Undertale OC name was a simple "nope" and names from other sources were just meh.

Until the other day, he was back to being called Doll!Sans and I'd resigned myself to waiting until he arrived to "tell" me his name.
And then, clicking around on NASA's website, I stumbled over a list of explorer ships and was proverbially smacked over the head with one that is - for now - perfect for my little guy.

So he's "Scout" until further notice and I love it <3

    18. Generally speaking, I only come up with names when I put up DOA profiles for them! :XD:

I'm really bad at naming dolls but have no trouble with anything else inanimate in my life. :sweat

    19. Whenever I name my dolls, the name normally comes to me after I look at the doll for the first time. This has happened multiple times, basically every time I get a new doll. Sometimes I keep the name of the sculpt because it fits the doll or I like the name. Examples are Force (FallinDoll Force Fox), Charlotte (Pipos Charlotte III 2021), and Rudy (Pipos Deer Rudy (27cm)).

    20. When I was thinking about what to name my first doll, the word Liquidâmbar (sweetgum) came to mind because of her sculpt name (Amber). I wasn't too sure at first, but it stuck in my mind, so I took it.
As for my second doll, I thought of Rosmaninho (rosemary), because of her body's sculpt name (Roze). Again, it stuck and I decided to keep it.

And that became my naming convention. I've decided to name all of my dolls after Portuguese words for various flora, but not necessarily after their sculpts - I try to think of a word that resembles them in some way or that I think would make a nice name.

    21. Circe I thought of her name looking at the sculpt and old company photos (Volks Johanna). She looks like an enchantress! Some of my dolls have normal human names, one has a reference to the sculpt in her middle name, but in another language, it all depends! :)

    22. My first BJD I named SO carefully. She was a rusalka- a Slavic water faerie, so I named her a variation on Lily in Romanian (Krina) because of water lilies. And she was going to have a noir femme fatale theme, so her last name was Rabbit in Romanian (Iepure) as a callback to Jessica Rabbit. I was incredibly proud of myself...and then she came home and just wanted to be an 18th-century, working-class urban fantasy heroine. Now I just wait for them to arrive and name them based on Vibes, so to speak.

(Exceprt the grail I'm hunting for right now, who I named Celandine when I first planned to get her and whose name I am honoring because 14-year-old me was right- It DOES sound cool!)

    23. I'm a name nerd so I usually start thinking about their name when I buy the doll and usually by the time they arrive I still haven't made up my mind, that's how nightmare-ish I am with naming dolls.

I take into consideration the personality I give them, the nationality I give them, the vibe I want for them, sometimes something that's also related to me either in general or something that is prevalent around the time between buying them and receiving them. The name's meaning also has to match and it has to be something I like (so I do strongly tend to go for nature related names).
When it comes to nationality I usually research surnames that are listed in census for specific areas of a country where I want them to be from as well.
Many times I learn a lot about history, geography, folklore, mythology and other things as I research, it's fun:whee:

    24. I am lazy so I just use the same name as the one in the product name

      • x 2
    25. If I'm shelling a character, I usually already have a name picked out. Other than that, I have to wait at least until the doll has a faceup and eyes (preferably also wig and clothes) to choose a name that fits their vibe. If I'm really stuck I go onto my favorite name site, Magic Baby Names, and put in the sculpt name or a name that I like that is close to what I want, but not quite right. That site returns a list of names with similar vibes, it's really helpful to me.

    26. My poor dolls never get a name. I just call them whatever their "official" name is. That might sound weird but I feel kind of bad for them because of that lol
Most of the time I just can't think of good and/or fitting names.

      • x 2
    27. Naming my dolls seems to happen similarly to naming characters in my writing.
I can never just come up with a name and force it on them. Instead, it's often something I just happen across or start calling them as a joke that just CLICKS. Like I'm waiting for them to tell me their names ahaha.

More than half of my dolls are still waiting on names right now!

The first one to ever get a name was my little DZ MiYou. For a while, the sculpt name had just sorta stuck with him, but I wanted him to have a name that was only his! At some point, I ended up calling him 'Minou'—French for 'kitty' because my MiYou is a little catboy—and that's the name that finally clicked for him, in part because it rhymes with MiYou! :kitty2

    28. I try not to name mine before they arrive because nearly all of them don't want to be the characters I have in mind.
Usually I handle them for a bit, try saying the name out loud a bit and see if it sticks.
Some of them use their sculpt names (Ryoma, Saki, Mako), some use a variation of the sculpt name (Mikoto from Miko, Evander from Evan), and some have names plucked from the aether (Aengliea, Yuka, Magome).
What's most important to me is how a name sounds – if it feels odd or clunky saying it, it's not going to stick!

    29. I typically extend one word from the official name to create a new name for the doll. Additionally, dolls from the same series will share either the same initial letter or word ending lol

      • x 1
    30. Usually I go with the first random name to pop into my head :XD: Sometimes some casual research is involved to get the brain juice activated.
Sometimes I keep the sculpt name. Sometimes based on a human name. Mostly it's a random word or something I made up :sweat
Whatever, it's good enough to not have to remember their "Make-Model-Size-Edition-Color-Optionalparts-Hybrid-Faceupartist" name every time.
Often the random name I pick ends up having some influence on their character or styling.

      • x 1
    31. To update: I have "nicknames" for all of my dolls. The most common are "Pinky Winky," "Littlefoot," "Peanut"/"Peanaximus," "Foofums," and "This-wig-will-fit-you-even-if-it-kills-me."

Incidentally, most of these are nicknames I've also given my pets.

      • x 2
    32. Usually, I name them after a show or movie character. I named one of my dolls based on an Asian drama character. Custom made the costume to fit the character. It's a k-drama Iljimae.

      • x 1
    33. Oh gosh I'm so lazy. I usually pick an object or something nearby, except for the doll which is based of off a longtime character of mine. My newest doll though was an accident... So I'm trying to figure out a cute way to name her 'accident'..

      • x 2
    34. I typically search for names that have a meaning tied to an attribute of my doll. (ie, a bear themed doll named Mishka or a doll with a light brown color scheme named Fawn). I’m also not opposed to giving my dolls strange names if I just think it’s cute haha.

      • x 1
    35. Names of my dolls are so different. I first look at the doll, spend time with her together, looking for eyes, wig, making face-up, style..and then choosing for a name. Sometimes doll reminds me somebody, like character from a book or a game. Sometimes name just comes in my mind, it just happens naturally. Sometimes look for inspiration online, if I need something more concrete.

    36. Zephii - Named after the cepheid variable stars, but I wanted to change the spelling a bit
Brink - Named from lyrics of a song, "I'm on the brink of something beautiful."
Aporia - Named after a city in FFXIV
Kimmie - Short for my online alias 'Kimochi'
Titan - Named after one of Saturn's moons
Evie - Named after my dad's late Japanese Chin (who was named after Eevee)
Kenji - Named after Kenshin & Kaori's son (Rurouni Kenshin)
Wish & Dream - I like the words, haha

      • x 2
    37. Either I see a doll and already have a name in mind. But mostly i just google some names or look on name lists and pick a few. Once the doll arrives, it’s easier for me to pick one. I have only one who troubles me with finding one for her :,)

    38. I've often said to people around me that if a name pops into my head when I am just looking at a doll, that's usually a sign to me that the doll in question is meant to be home with me.

That being said, sometimes you get the doll home and the name that popped into your head doesn't really fit. In that case, I do often just spend a lot of time sitting with the doll, dressing and redressing them to try to come up with a name. It can take a good while to make sure I have the perfect name for them.

The easiest named BJD I own was little Basil Vincent, who is in my profile picture. Basil came from Great Mouse Detective because for some reason the sculpt made me think of the anime Sherlock Hound, and Vincent came from Vincent Price who never played the infamous detective but really should have. He also voiced Rattigan in GMD so there was that connection there.

    39. It usually takes me a while, so some dolls go years without a name, but on the other hand, some dolls get named before they even get here. First I'll go through my baby name book and see if anything jumps out, otherwise I just sort of ruminate on it. Sometimes I'll name them something that references their theme- for example, my doll based on cosmic horror is named Warren Danforth, two names stolen from Lovecraft stories.

I have too many to list all their name stories here, but they're almost as varied as the dolls themselves.

    40. I have names and characters in my head long before I order them.

    41. Naming my girls is one of my favorite and least favorite parts. While looking for names and picking them is fun, I am such an outlandish perfectionist that I can never just pick one and often go back on my decisions..:sweat
Other than that, I usually use online name generators and try to explore names from different countries and even pre-existing characters. I have a thing for short and sweet names- usually 2-3 syllables. I always have to wait for them to get their faceup before I can decide!

      • x 1
    42. I say that my characters live in my head and present themselves when they feel confortable to, so I don't really have a method to name my BJDs (they are representations of the characters of my books and comics), I just... know how they are named?

There were times when I gave my dolls names I like, but these were the dolls that I ended up selling because I couldn't bond with them. I also have dolls with names that are not specifically my favorites, but I love them to pieces cause we don't usually choose the names of the ones we love, right?

Well, that's how my mind works hahahaha :XD:

      • x 1
    43. For inspiration, I use favorite actor names, characters from books, movies or tv shows. When I get stuck, I’ll go to the Naming Woes thread and fall into the baby names rabbit hole. Some dolls go through a few names before they settle on one. Some even get first and last names. My least creative name is Luke for my Volks Black Cat Lucas - I considered calling him Lucas but felt that was just too lazy.

And then there’s my Iplehouse Rex, Dalton. My husband refers to him as Chunk Hardbody.

      Sigh.

      • x 3
    44. I come up with names first based on meaning, and then I choose the one that I think suits the doll best by the sound of it. It takes me foreeverr to name a doll though…

    45. Sometimes I have an idea, and that idea sticks, but most of the time I let the names come up when the doll is complete. Turns out a floating head isn't enough to be sure. I exclude names that remind me of anything that isn't the doll (celebrities, fictional characters, people I know) as well as names that are too complicated. I prefer simple names that roll nicely on the tongue and I'll always pick the simplest variant of a name if there are multiple spellings. I also pick names that sound good in all of the languages I speak the most - they can be foreign names, but they can't feel foreign. Also I'm most likely going to shorten the name if it's a long one, so I pay attention to that as well.

    46. I used to be better at naming things but these days I really struggle and like some others I can have dolls for many years and never find a name for them.
My normal method is to just see what pops into my head especially as I tend to do my own faceups so quite often the doll turns out to be completely different to the plan in my head. The influences can come from anywhere. I’m incredibly cautious about looking at baby name lists and combining ones I like now after that method ended up producing a rather rude name in a different language.

Some of the ones I currently have are:

Connor When I first gave him eyes and a wig the expression on his face reminded me of a particular character in a TV show I loved so that became his name. Not what I would have chosen but that is what he wanted.

Bailey Again named after a TV show character due do her ability to pout and give withering stares.

Penny Dreadful After watching that show I thought it would make a brilliant name for a gothy looking doll, she’s had several incarnations and will be moving into yet another as I just don’t like the particular doll she currently inhabits.

Izzy (short for Ismenia) Needed an old fashioned name and quite liked Ismenia, sold the doll who originally had it but recently gave that name to my Dollstown hybrid. The fact that the actress who kind of inspired me as she reminded of the DT sculpts is also called Izzy helped a lot.

Fern This really wasn’t where I imagined her heading name wise but it kept popping into my head each time I picked her up so Fern it is. Might change the spelling slightly though.

Tatties Had the idea of making this tiny into a rather feral, grubby looking being with streak of dirt on his face. An old Scottish saying came to mind “That’s so dirty you could grow Tatties (potatoes) in it” and so he became Tatties.

Patticake I got this name from a book I read many years ago, I think it was one of the books written by the Adamsons about their life with all the African animals (Born Free being the most well known).

Professor Cricklebeak This poor doll (DC ‘Carol’) is still in bits after many years with a half finished faceup and blush. I have the image in my head of a rather stuffy, dusty tweed wearing or maybe rather prim Edwardian dress wearing schoolmaster or mistress. The Cricklebeak part of the name was inspired by one of my parrots who was sitting softly grinding her beak, a thing parrots do when content.

Tuppence Named after my FFXIV Lalafell character Tuppence Halfpenny. It should of course be Tuppence Hae’pny (the way some regions pronounced halfpenny) but when you’re dealing with players that speak other languages sometimes region pronunciations cause confusion or you get tired of answering repeated questions. Tuppence and Halfpennies are old UK currencies no longer in circulation.

    47. I don't have complex or deep meanings behind my doll's names or stories.

The Volks Four Sisters is a sculpt I've always regarded as my favorite and ultimately want to collect variations of. I also really love nature in all its forms so it was an easy transition to theme my dolls around a lifelong passion of mine. My goal is to collect four total Four Sister dolls and to interpret their styling with the nature theme by making each doll relevant to a particular season. It also works out well that there are four seasons and I'll have four total dolls planned! I picked the names because they're alliterative, stay within the nature theme, and I selected Japanese names to pay homage to the country of their origin. Their names are as follows: Midori (Green) is my Spring girl, Momoko (Peach Child) is my Summer girl, Momiji (red leaves of the Japanese maple tree) my Autumn girl, and Miyuki (Deep Snow) my Winter girl.

It's been interesting reading everyone's plans and explanations for why their chose their doll's names!

    48. I love naming my dolls! I have to wait for a name that feels "right," though, otherwise I can't bond with them. The speed of naming also seems to be inversely proportional to how important the doll is to me on a personal level. Aiyu took ages to name, as she was/is my grail girl and I'm deeply invested in her working out, while Ingrid and Marcie named themselves within days.

Aiyu Naeuri - First name was pulled from KPop artist IU, as her song Jam Jam gives off a very similar vibe to the doll. Last name came from her stint as my FFXIV character, as a Raen Au Ra. Raens use very traditional Japanese names, so I picked a thematically appropriate last name for her and it's stuck!

Eden Cloudchaser - I wanted him to have a feminine-leaning unisex name that was also very fantastic/mythology-inspired. He's intended to be duplicitous and is actually quite cruel, so I thought a name that sounded gentle and/or disarming would be most appropriate to contrast his personality and behaviors.

Ingrid Michaelsen - I wanted a name that involved the letter I that makes a long "ee" sound, somewhat reminiscent of her sculpt name (Mi), while also suiting an alt/goth-esque sort of girl with an attitude. Ingrid strikes the balance between being stuffy and being effortlessly cool, imo. Michaelsen is pulled from another doll collector, as I just really liked the way it sounded with Ingrid.

Marceline "Marcie" Jean Breeland - Marcie's nickname was apparent from the moment she arrived. I wanted her to have a longer name, so "Marceline" it was. Pretty shortly thereafter, she became a bit of a country western horse girl, so I decided she needed to have both alliteration and some twang in her name. Breeland is the name of a fictional herb in Nancy Drew: Danger by Design in the tea-making puzzle that I thought sounded like it could be a name and paired well with Marcie. Jean felt like the only natural middle name choice here, even though most of my dolls don't have middle names.

Phoebe Sophia - She was named by Aiyu and Ingrid, canonically, and I particularly like the meaning of "pure" and "bright." She is sweet and well-meaning, but still very young (comparatively). No last name, as she is not human and was not "born" in any traditional sense, though she may take Aiyu or Ingrid's names (or a portmanteau of the two) in the future.

Khadija - I don't have a good backstory for Khadija's name! It's a name I like very much and is also very old, which is suiting for an ageless vampire to steal from a dead lover, which is a character detail I took from Pisha in Vampire: the Masquerade - Bloodlines. Khadija's true name is unknown, even to me, and I get the distinct impression she prefers it that way. After all, in my universe, names have power, and Khadija is nothing if not a bit of a control freak over her domain.

Wilhelmina "Mina" - "Light of all lights" is a fitting name meaning for my witch. She is intentionally named after Mina in Bram Stoker's Dracula! She also has two sisters named Virginia and Sylvia, all of whom were given "old," classic-sounding, distinctly literary names. Some of their collective character arc is based on the True Fear: Forsaken Souls game trilogy if the premise had been taken in a different direction. I want to give her a last name at some point, but I'd need her a bit closer to completion before that will happen!

Dionysus "Nysus" - Surprisingly not named after the Greek god of festivities and wine, he's named after a character in a space horror novel that I really enjoyed last year. Similarly to Mina, I want to give him a last name, but he's still in the very early stages of development and I need more time to ponder and play with him before I can.

    49. Like pretty much the rest of way I do this hobby, it's a hodge-podge disaster lmao. Some of them just pop into my head when I have them in hand (like Nobuyuki and Salem), some of them are chosen for the meaning - for example, Koray (Ember Moon) or Suvi (Summer in Finnish as a nod to her creator, Summerbird). Sometimes they're inspired by another doll they go with - Arkrose and Steelbriar, Tea and Smoke, etc.

Some of them are just silly jokes, like the vampire being named Asa (healer), Nanashi (lit. "nameless") or Iris (got 'im with my irs tax refund.) There's really no rhyme or reason, it just Is What It Is. Very annoying when you aren't sure if a name isn't working because The Vibes Are Rancid or something else.

    50. @Blodeuwedd
      and
      @Thespian

I really like how you both gave the stories behind the specific names, that kind of stuff is so fun for me to read.

My dolls don’t all have such detailed inspirations behind their names, but I’ll add mine:

Adelheid — not sure where I first heard this name, but I wanted my first doll to be named this.

Jane — named after Jane Eyre, which I had been reading either around the time I ordered or got her. I gave her dark hair and green eyes like Jane from the book. She’s definitely not a character doll, but definitely inspired by her

Lily — lilies are my favourite flower and I named by grail doll, Volks Suiseiseki, for it

Gremory — poor girl didn’t have a name for so long, like fifteen years. Originally her character was meant to be an alien, but when I got her that didn’t click. Not so long ago the name Gremory popped into my head, and it clicked, so she’s named after one of the Goetia demons now. I’m working on making her character a demoness.

Kira — I thought Kira Kira was the name of a sculpt I loved from Coco Project (a BJD company that I am not sure is around anymore) but turns out this was one of the artists. Anyway, she’s named after a BJD artist.

Hina — My most uncreative name, Hina is merely named for the sculpt she is, Volks Hinaichigo.

    51. Mine were based on my writing in the past. For the incoming one I am waiting on, I will base it off of my spirit guide!
