Aesthetics Naga 1st mod & 2nd face up

Mar 20, 2017

    1. I felt like working on my little Sugarble naga girl. I started out with the 4R face-

The face wasn't quite right for the character I had in mind so did some subtractive modding. I changed the eye shape and sanded down the tempe bulges as wanted the character to have a more wide eyed innocent look. I changed to mouth to be a little more happy and sanded down the nose and jowls a touch to make it look a little older. I didn't carve in a new eye crease as wanted a more smooth snake look.

Face up time! I wanted to use pink, gold and white for her colour pallet. A WIP after the first session-

      Finished face-up!

I also added some scale detail to the side of her face. I'm planning to do something similar for another character so glad I found it works well :)

      And with eyes and wig-

All of the eyes! XD Phew, glad I don't have to do this for a living as i'm finding the painting very challenging. I'm still struggling with getting smooth lines round the eyes and doing eyebrows, I hope that gets better with practice. I thought the eyebrows were looking a bit solid so tried to add some hair detail but that didn't work very well (but it's all good learning ^^)

Also doing your own face-up comes with the problem of being very intensely aware of all the little mistakes. O: On the plus side, I found all the info I needed on modding, sanding, sealing, face-ups and health and safety precautions etc by reading various threads on this message board so that helped me a lot! I hope when I re-do this face-up at a future point that i'll have the confidence to do some additive modding as would like to tweak the eye shape a little more:)

    3. That's very impressive for a first mod! Looking good.

Faceups come to life with chalk pastels. If you're having trouble with paint, try blushing some areas with artist chalk, and using paint for details? Paint may become easier to work with as you get used to it and how it applies.

    4. I love the ears so much! What a beautiful sculpt!! I would recommend adding a few more layers to your colors. They look a bit unfinished but that's nothing a few more layers of the intended color cant fix!

    5. Thanks for the feedback. I used chalk pastels for the blushing but was having trouble getting a strong enough colour for the eyelids. I think the trick might be to use the sealant to be able to build up layers. Definitely something I will have to play with more! :D

Good suggestion. The shimmer pink paint I used has a semi-transparent look so comes out looking a little wishy-washy so more layering might help with that and making things looks a bit more neat :)

    6. I think she looks wonderful, especially for your first eye mod attempt. Mine did not go as well as yours haha. She's so dang cute, and I absolutely love her eyes!

    7. The mod looks really lovely. Her pink and gold pallet is very nice too. I think the fact that you didn't use gloss also helps her look a bit more scaly and snakey.

    9. Have Pets the snake - cool ^^ About the makeup - maybe next time you should try to make the scales more contrast? Add a little color on the tail and the same scales on the cheeks? Or do a slightly different color outline? Just the photo with the snake scales on her cheeks is not visible.

    10. Aww thank you! Modding is tricky as it's easy to get carried away! I would like to try some additive modding to refine the eye shape a bit but still not quite confident on doing that XD I'm glad you like her, I was so excited when I spotted those eyes on Licht as they are so perfect :)

Thank you, I was a bit worried that there was going to be too many shades of pink the in design but think it's come together okay :D

*LOL* Yes, that's my corn snake Little Prince, he's a real sweetie. Funny enough I and other white snake owners often get asked if our snakes are real, there's something about white snakes that makes them look fake in photos XD

Awesome, thank for the feedback! I'm not sure why the photo of the scales isn't showing, I'll check the link, thanks for letting me know. The scales were a quick test to see if it would work as a subtle detail. I think when I do that effect on the other doll I will add in more detail to add some texture to make them more visable. Also they need to come in further on the face as they get hidden too much by the wig so it's been a useful experiment. Hopefully I can get them to look better on my next attempt! :)

    11. Lovely! For the scales I recommend using a dry pastel and making a small and slight c shape along the face, then smoothing the inner portion (if I had my drawing tablet right now I'd draw you an example~) also making the scales tread closer to the eye may bring out the child-like face shape better! I love snakes, in fact in the summer I typically volunteer at a reptile house so it's refreshing to see such a nice doll <3

Thank you for the feedback and suggestions. If you get a moment with your tablet i'd love to see a visual example of what you have in mind as it sounds really interesting :) Yes, snakes are great, they're so unlike any other animal I've worked with. I wanted a pet one since I was little so I'm so happy I can have one now. I love looking at their scale patterns, it's so fascinating to how the scaling fits around the head and face :D

Thank you, they do go together well! XD
