I've been making dolls out of all kinds of materials since I was a kid - from flowers to toothpicks to cloth, but am glad to finally have the time and resources to make more realistic and posable dolls, like I've always dreamed of. I actually started learning how bjd were jointed and balanced by buying a couple of tiny stature, because my desire to create dolls has nothing to do with not wanting to buy dolls, but everything to do with needing to create little people, and tell stories. Right now I'm working on a series of seven doll bodies (since I got a great deal on bass wood for the armatures) tentatively referred to as my muses, but that may change as I get further along. When it comes to actual composition of the dolls, I grew up fascinated with (though often repulsed by the aesthetics of) antique dolls, and am trying out some older casting compounds than urethane resin, mainly because I'm curious and really like to know why useful materials are abandoned over the years. Aesthetically, I find Tsutomu Nihei's drawings to have a great influence on my vision of the ideal face, especially since he makes wonderful use of light, shadow, and texture - all of which I use in my other work as a photographer and fibre artist. I'm glad to have found this forum, and am really curious what other people are working on. Being secret at the moment, it seems all the more alluring.
