So I think I'll try sharing my plans for various doll project here, just in case I do something that inspires/warn someone else. I'll keep this post updated with main points but post detailed stuff under it I guess? FACEUPS I don't want to dump much money into this until I can dip my toes in. Prep done: Watched so many videos. Read a ton of stuff. Made some shopping lists. Supplies I have: Liquid acrylic paint. Kneaded eraser. Liquitex matte medium (will do for now) Supplies needed: Too much to list here but luckily I live near an art store. First step: Buy brush cleaner to remove old faceup from the guy that really wants a new face. Next: Get very minimal supplies, remove faceup, attempt faceup Backup plan: I have a couple faceup artists I want to send him to. I can probably use the supplies for other art projects. WIG MAKING I'm super excited about this one and so far my first wig is going well I think. Prep done: I've watched a ton of videos over the years on wig making, mostly gluing wefts onto a wigcap. Supplies I have: Slicker brush, glue, plastic, I might have a rubber band somewhere, and tons and tons and tons of yarn Supplies needed: a stretchy fabric (I think I saw someone use tulle and it seems like a good idea) So far I have turned some green/brown yarn into a bunch of wefts. I have my victim and I pretty much just need fabric and I need to make sure i have plastic wrap and a rubber band. DIORAMA/ROOMBOX Supplies being used: For the walls and floors Popsicle sticks for floorboards Paint for floorboards I love having a doll sized space for my dolls! I've been wanting to put together a proper one for my dolls ever since I got into the hobby. I want one that can work great for multiple sizes/types by just switching out furniture. I had a makeshift one once years ago but I want to do a proper one. I'm ready to drop insufferable amounts of time and money on it. The idea: Build a room box for dolls 1/4 and smaller. 2 walls, 1 floor. Maybe 3 walls? Maybe make the walls reversible. Want to be able to fold it all up and stash it away when I'm not going to be using it for awhile. I'm planning on buying some coroplast for the walls and floor. For the floor I want wood flooring made from popsicle sticks. I have prepped most of the "boards" from the supplies I have but cutting them with a heavy duty pair of nail clippers. using a heavy duty pair of nail clippers. I may need to buy more sticks but I'll buy the coroplast first. I'm going to do some tests to create a "stain" with my acrylic inks. If that doesn't work out I guess i'll look into other options. I think I want to go for a somewhat dark wood color. Important note: I think I'll need to stain the boards before I glue them down. If I glue first then the stain will likely get to the glue and mess with it. Also maybe I should glue it to a dark/black fabric or paper and glue THAT to the coroplast so that there isn't any white peeking through the boards. *edit* I found black coroplast! I'm thinking about using velcro to help hold the walls in place, kind of fashion it like a hinge? This won't be too sexy if I want reversible walls though. HELP NEEDED: I have been looking all over for ideas on how to have a nice join/molding for where the wall meets the floor but I can't figure it out. Halp?! I have also been trying to figure out the nicest and easiest ways to cover the walls. Any dollhouse wallpaper I find is way too small. Scrapbook paper doesn't come with enough pieces in a pack + it's too short and having all those seams is gonna suck. I've looked at a ton of shelf liner paper and found a few that might work but I will still end up with joins. Real wallpaper would probably be wide enough the the patterns would be too big. Furniture Needed: For the minifees: I have been looking for YEARS for all the perfect doll furniture. I think I've settled on some furniture from etsy that you assemble and paint yourself. There's tons of shops but I'll link my fav later. A wardrobe or clothes hanger would be awesome. For mini dollfie dream: I think I know what bunk bed to get her but it might end up being too tall for the space. Maybe I can just get her a couch, I don't know. I need to really plan that out before I buy the coroplast, I might need bigger than I originally expected. I wouldn't mind getting her a wardrobe. For mature tinies: I need everything! For 1/6 youth: better bedding! I can crochet/knit that and am working on a crochet star throw blanket. Furniture already owned: For 1/6 youth: The have a bed. Have a nice play mat. All sort of toys and plushies. For mini dollfie dream: She has a desk thats a little short for her but it works. She has tons of props. For all dolls: A cubby shelf thing. Ton of props for all sizes.
Best of luck on your journey! Building a doll room is quite the adventure. I was working on a gothic/mideaval themed study a couple years ago and had to pause for personal stuff. But I have a few tips to pass on from that experience. For the floor boards, the fat Popsicle sticks were perfect. I clipped off the rounded ends with wire cutters. Then just hot-glued them on my black-painted base. I then went to the hardware store and got a small pot of wood stain that was a half-n-half (it was a stain and finish combo) then just painted and rubbed the wood until it was the color I wanted. For the walls, I did a sneaky trick to hide the seams. Because my walls were made from craft foam core boards that were about 1 X 0.5 meters in size. I used some wood strips to overlap on the seams and so they look like support beams that were intentional in the structure of the room. Below I have some random photos from my IG to help show what I mean. Login • Instagram Login • Instagram I didn't do anything for the wall-to-floor connection, but the trick should work just the same. For wallpaper, I usually look for patterned sticky paper rolls that (at least in Saudi Arabia) we use as either drawer liners, or to rebind books and folders. I personally have 2 rolls of floral designs that remind me of cottage themed wallpaper. And one marble one that's just a good forest green for one-off photos. I think the velcro idea is brilliant! I might try to add that to my walls. It should be way better than the painters tape I've been using XD
For wallpaper I've had good luck with art paper. I have gotten it at Blick art supply and at paper shops. It comes in 20" by 30" sheets so fewer seams than with scrapbook paper. I don't have a proper room box but the paper provides a perfectly acceptable wall. Pain by Tom Beach, on Flickr
I thought for sure the fat ones would be too big but now I'm wondering if I could have got them instead. I think I'll order the walls/floor tonight and see how it looks, maybe I'll save the small ones for a smaller room. I didn't know about the half-n-half stain, I'll have to look for some if my paint idea doesn't work! The support beam idea is brilliant! I hadn't thought of that. Having something that looks like a beam or column or whatever is a great idea. Thanks for all the tips/ideas!
If you decide to make a room with a stone or tile floor, you could try the sets of kitchen wall tiles that most hardware stores sell. I believe there's also some that appear to look like wood (but are tile or other synthetic material). The tiles come in 12in by 12in squares of tilesets I believe (or a similar size, usually a square sheet of tile), and many are self-adhesive, so you can stick them to the coroplast sheets and have a bunch as interchangeable floors. The tiles are small since they're meant for kitchen wall sidings, so they look like in-scale doll floor tiles! There's a lot of options, like faux marble, faux wood, and a lot of different types of stone (both real and synthetic I believe), as well as different shapes for the individual tiles, from rectangles to squares to octagons. If you look online they'll probably be sold in boxes of hundreds of 12by12 sheets (too expensive and way too many), but I've found them at in-person stores being sold in single 12by12 sheets of tiles for prices between $9 to $22. Some of the fancier ones are closer to $30 or more, such as the wood ones, so it can get kinda pricey, but they all look very realistic. You'd probably only need 2 to 4 square sheets of tiles for a room box floor depending on how wide and deep it is. Examples of what some of them look like: example 1 | example 2 | example 3 You can buy these at most stores that sell construction and renovation supplies. I'm not sure what the big name stores are in the USA, but in Canada, places like Rona and Home Depot sell tons of them. I think ACE is an example of an American store that is in the same line of business? Some warnings though: - you need to wash any of the ones made of real or synthetic stone (not sure about wood) because they have dust on them that's not good to breathe in. Wash or soak them in water first and let them dry before gluing them to anything or using them. - they are a little heavy in my experience, so you want to make sure they're attached securely to the coroplast board. - not all of them come pre-grouted (meaning, some of them have gaps in between the tiles). You could buy real grout I guess, but you could also probably fill in the gaps with something homemade, like coloured hot glue, air dry clay, etc. For the issue with gaps between walls and floors you mentioned: There's some small window pane materials I've been meaning to try as a fake baseboard -- the long panel that most houses have at the bottom of the wall to cover that gap between the wall and floor. I'm not sure what the material is called or where exactly you can get it, but it's a narrow piece of white plastic that should imitate a modern baseboard decently well in doll scale. As far as I was told, it's used for the panels that go across glass windows in houses. I was given a strip of it by a family member who works in construction since they know I'm interested in making doll room dioramas, but I think you should be able to buy it at the same places that sell the sheets of tiles. (Honestly, if you know anyone who works in construction, ask them if they can take home for you some of the scrap materials that are small, such as wood or plastic pieces. The material is brand new, and they often have a lot of extra after a job is done. I've gotten a lot of free materials this way, which work well for floors and certain types of detailing in room dioramas.) A quick search on the website of my local hardware store shows it as something called "weatherstripping" for windows, specifically the solid plastic type that comes in a long narrow strip. The price and size varies a lot but the cheapest strip is about $15! For the wallpaper issue you mentioned: Have you considered combination type walls? Some kinds of houses have a lower section of the wall covered by a wooden board or lattice like this or this, and the rest of the wall is a plain paint or a simple floral print. You could use a wooden or lattice bottom board and a solid painted wall colour, to avoid wallpaper seams and also have a wall that isn't too plain. I think you can buy wooden lattice like this from garden stores or hardware stores, but I'm not sure if it would be in scale since I haven't seen it in person. You could probably make it out of popsicle sticks yourself though! For the solid wood board you could buy sheets of cheap craft wood from an arts and crafts store like Michaels Craft Store. If you're concerned about the walls being too plain with basic paint even with a wooden bottom board, that same craft store also sells cheap mini metal picture frames. You could print out some artwork and glue them to the back of the picture frames and hang them up on the walls as decoration to spice it up a bit. Hope these ideas are helpful, and sorry for so much text
Ohhhh I know exactly what you're talking about! I hadn't thought about that, such a great idea for tiling. I did a tile/grout project before, like a LONG time ago and it isn't difficult, I'd totally consider doing a tile flooring option. Weatherstripping! such a great idea! I kept picturing something like that in my mind but didn't think actual weatherstripping, I didn't know it came in that plastic form. I bet it could be colored, if need be, maybe with alcohol inks. Wainscoting! Yes, I was strongly considering wainscoting, wondering if I could use popsicle sticks or something to create it or even use some small stones or pebbles. No, you're amazing! This is super helpful and will be super useful! I think I'll have the chance to get to a hardware store this weekend/next week so maybe I'll be able to find some useful goodies.
So my walls/floors got here! I went with black because I figured white peaking through the boards wouldn't be a good look. I played around a little last night with "staining" the boards. I used Liquitex acrylic in in the color "transparent raw umber" and I think it was a perfect choice! BUUUUT now I'm thinking maybe I should have done the jumbo popsicle sticks. I'm going to compromise with my ADHD: I'll go ahead with using these regular sized ones because it does look good, with the caveat that I will be doing the jumbo size later on. I don't want to spread out my floor task into 2 different scales. I'll just put them on another sheet, or the other side. The smaller sticks would be perfect for my smaller scale dolls so this isn't an actual loss. I had a hard time taking a pic with my Minifee... I wired her the other day to help her sit better but I didn't realize at the time that it made her not want to stand. So here are a couple awkward photos of me trying to just balance everything for a quick shot. Spoiler: 2 floor/wall/doll sample pics Untitled by charlie, on Flickr by charlie, on Flickr What kind of wire cutters did you use? The pair I have is just for cutting jewelry wire and I can't imagine those would work on larger popsicle sticks but I am often wrong lol
So I have a lot to say about my plank painting/gluing today but I'll drop that news later because I'm excited I found an interesting shop on etsy. This guy makes foam pieces for building walls/floors and such for dollhouses and D&D games, etc. He makes BEAMS and I was thinking it would be cool to use those beams as "support beams". He also makes floor planks! In the size I need! All precut and ready to go! OK but my only concern is the floorboards would be too soft, even after being painted. Unless I use some kind of "hard" paint I guess. But I'm thinking the "beams" might work if I glue "bricks" or something on top of it. While looking around I also remembered seeing teeny doll size bricks and stencil sort of thing that you can press into clay to create the impression of bricks. I was thinking making 1 or 2 walls a brick wall, maaaaybe. The stencil person does custom work so I may contact them about making a 1/4 size stencil if I decide to go that route. I think I've also seen some molds in the past for creating bricks but I think they were too small for my needs :-/
ok so quick floor and wallpaper update: I haven't been by the art store yet to look at art paper for wallpaper but I was thinking, maybe textured wallpaper would be nice? I found 2 on Amazon, 1 a really really like but cost about $52 and another one I like quite a bit for under $10. So it's giving me something to think about. Also I had totally forgotten that I have some fancy art paper from Dick Blick that is gorgeous but it's super dark. I'd have to look at it again, maybe it could work as an accent wall for one of the wall sets. (I have 8 boards to play with) The way I was gluing the boards down wasn't working out well and it's hard to explain why. I was working in chunks from left to right then down and right to left. This wouldn't let some of the boards lay flat, they were tensioned against each other and they'd pop up when I ran my hand over it. Or pop other boards out when I tried to place others down. This photo shows how I had a pretty good size chunk done the empty spaces are where boards didn't fit properly: floor oops 2 by charlie, on Flickr Here is a photo to show right when I realized how bad it was getting. I'd either have to do some surgery on the wood to make it fit in the messed up spots, or start over. floor oops 1 by charlie, on Flickr I think I found a better way to lay them down. I pulled all the boards up and started placing them in a sort of vertical manner. I had to stop because I realized I should be putting in half boards at the top and bottom to help making sure there is no tension. It's really hard to explain but maybe it will make sense anyway. floor win? by charlie, on Flickr I hope I figured out my problem! I had a nice break and I'm about to get back to it.
I suspect what's happening is that the wet glue is slightly warping the sticks and causing the tension. My initial flooring was with mod-podge and I had the exact same issue. I later just opted for hot glue to lay them down. Also, if you have too many tiny gaps that bug you. Look up wood filler putty from any hardware store. It's a putty made from saw dust that come in a small jar, and they come is many wood stain colors. so that can help "grout" the caps between the sticks for you, if you wanted. And to answer you wire cutter question, they were just large toolbox based wire cutters. I have both regular and jewelry ones. And the bigger the thing you need to cut, the bigger the beak of the pliers or cutters need to be. Some of my popsicles sticks did have mild splintering, but I just sanded the ends down and it was done.
That's totally a big part of a problem, and I was worried about warping but I didn't think it would be this bad. I think the other problem is my cuts aren't all completely straight :-/. Anyway my new method is helping quite a bit. The putty is a great idea! OK so for more updates... I've decided that I can't keep doing this popsicle floor thing. I mean, I'll have to take my time finishing this one but I won't be able to do the size that I wanted from the beginning. I've enjoyed the process, the repetitiveness of the individual tasks reminds me of knitting and crocheting. BUT it's killing my (right) hand, shoulders and back. It really sucks because it's looking so good! It would help a little if I could get the project up off the floor but it's just too big. The only reason why I jumped into finally doing all this is because I've been dealing with similar hand issues in my LEFT hand while crocheting. I thought I could find some other activity to do for awhile but it's looking like this ain't it. I'm so not amused. I did manage to finish cutting the rest of the boards I will need to buy another couple packs of popsicle sticks to finish the floor. I'm going to have to take my time doing it... or just rip it all up and use the boards for something else. OH hold on I was just thinking I bet there's popsicle-type sticks that don't have the rounded ends and I started digging around and I found THESE! They have little grooves for the handle area but I'm thinking if they are laid down super randomly then it shouldn't be a problem. I also found these but I'd have to do some math to see if a pack of 100 will be enough... I'll keep looking around. Anyway, last night I found some neat floorboard stickers but to do a whole piece would be very spendy and I have to decide if it's worth it. I also thought maybe a concrete floor would be neat? I found some concrete wallpaper that might do the trick. Last night I found some tiles that you use to create a backsplash in your kitchen and they're absolutely gorgeous. To me it looked like floorboards, especially just the shape, and it's probably going to look absolutely terrible but I'm going to try it out of sheer desperation. If it fails miserably I'll find something else to make with it which shouldn't be too hard because I want to put it on EVERYTHING. I'll be pretty excited if it works out. The more stuff I pick up for the project the more I feel like I'm creating a weird glam bougie place and it'll all make sense in the end. (spoiler alert: it absolutely WILL NOT) Speaking of wallpapers... I found some that were on a lightning deal on amazon, a white and a black textured one. I figured it would look nice and be easy to deal with because there's no pattern matching to deal with. I wanted the black to do some art projects so unless I change my mind, it won't be used for walls.. The white showed up today and it's gorgeous and perfect! I "installed" it and it was such a pain in the ass. I really could have used a 2nd pair of hands. I've never done anything with wallpaper before and I've always been awful at wrapping presents and this was pretty much like wrapping very skinny presents. The wallpaper is self adhesive but barely sticks so I had to use tape on the back to hold it down. I thought taping it down on the backside would be suitable because I'd get it all taped down and look at it and it's not too bad at all. And then a few minutes later I feel like there's more wrinkles than before and the seams are repelling each other and the tape is popping up. And I didn't know wallpaper was so incredibly THIN so I didn't think about how the texture of the coroplast would show through! Ugh. What a disaster. I redid things a few times and just gave up because my back is absolutely killing me. Tomorrow I might try gluing it down, maybe practice a little with the bit of extra I have leftover. If it continues to be absolute garbage I'll tear it all up and toss it in my art fodder pile. So this was before. "fixed" the right hand side for the last time roombox wallpaper (white, textured) 1 by charlie, on Flickr And here is a mini Dollfie Dream helping out. I just ran a couple strips of tape across the backs of the 2 walls to help hold them in place for now. roombox wallpaper (white, textured) 2 by charlie, on Flickr
Excited floor update! The backsplash tiles are AMAZING. (they had a great coupon when I bought them, it's gone now) OK before I show pics I gotta say the wallpaper is looking worse and worse and it's totally because the "self adhesive" is a lie. It's detaching more and more as the time goes by so uh yeah you REALLY just need to ignore the wallpaper at this point. Pretend it doesn't exist. Anyway I'm so excited about this floor! Untitled by charlie, on Flickr I was thinking the metal wouldn't be tacky but figured with my luck it would look bad but it actually blends right in depending on the angle and looks really nice. I only had to use 6 of 10 tiles. If I decide to add more floor space I'll have enough to expand. *edit* Meant to add that these stick REALLY well. Maybe TOO well. I would hope so, because it's heavy and meant to be a backsplash. But I just wanted to mention it. Spoiler: 2 more pics with Minifee Untitled by charlie, on Flickr Untitled by charlie, on Flickr I also went ahead and ordered some paint stir sticks to use for more flooring or other things. I have ideas on how to use them for different things (wood support beams, baseboards, wainscoting maybe) so I figured it couldn't hurt to pick up a pack. I won't have to cut them nearly as much as the smaller boards so I think my hands will be ok in the long run. I think they'll be thicker than the regular sticks so warping shouldn't be a problem though I'll have to get more creative with breaking them down to size. I'm feeling a bit hopeful again! My main issue now just seems to be getting the wallpaper to look good but I got shit to do so I'll have to mess with it later. *edit* I tried the black wallpaper omg Spoiler: 2 black wallpaper pics So I sampled a bit of the black wallpaper and noticed it was sticking REALLY well + the coroplast teture wasn't showing through so I went ahead and stuck it all down! I planned ahead of time, knew I'd run out. So I have one small section that has no paper but idc. If I do a third wall I'll buy more paper. So this time I taped the 2 walls together at the corner and laid the paper over that so they're connected by tape + paper. I ran it horizontally and across the 2 walls because I figured it would be must less frustrating. Near the end of the project I REALLY got the hang of putting it down so if I had to redo it all I wouldn't mind. Overall I am very pleased with the results! Oh, I also decided to go with more of a square shape so I'm using the full length of both walls and 3 more tiles. The extra three are just hanging out. I didn't add material to the floor. It works great so for now I'll keep it like that. black wallpaper by charlie, on Flickr black wallpaper w/minifee by charlie, on Flickr
Oh wooooow. DUDE! That is coming out gorgeously!!!! Seriously, loving the progress. And the black wallpaper really complements the floor tiles. Beautiful find.
The backsplash tiles as flooring looks really nice! This thread is honestly making me want to start working on my diorama projects too; maybe I'll try out the large popsickle stick / craft wood stick method for wood flooring too as I only have materials for stone/tile type floors at the moment. Your wood floors were looking really nice too, it's too bad the board started warping. Hopefully the larger sticks and a different gluing method works out for you! Excited to see how it turns out in the future along with the rest of your project
I’m glad you like it and it’s inspiring you! Tiny floor update: I’m out of town until next weekend. I started playing with the paint sticks today. My dad successfully cut a couple of them I half very nicely but then a couple came out really jagged. Easy enough to clean up and turn over to hide the jagged part but he wasn’t excited about it. He used an xacto (?) blade to score it some and another blade that reminded me of a chisel to kind of split it. He thinks he has a saw in the shed, and some clamps, so I think we might try playing with that tomorrow. I think we only need to cut about 8 boards in half. I might pop by a hardware store to look at some stains. ♀️ The wood really sucked up my ink paint, I think it’s more porous than the pop sickle sticks. I’m also wondering again about what kind of glue to use. My dad said super glue I’m thinking rubber cement, but it’s so stinky. I absolutely loath hot glue so that’s a last resort. I started thinking about how to make the boards look like they’re nailed down. I tried making marks before and after with graphite, black sharpie, and silver sharpie. There is some potential in silver sharpie but ehhh….
I remember looking into using real wood stain for dollhouse projects (for wooden doll's furniture initially) and I remember it seeming really impractical for the scale of things being done. Most (if not all, I think?) wood stains contain toxins that will leech out in the drying process, so it's recommended to leave the stained wood outside (or at least not in your house), and I think the average drying time for the wood stain was like 30 days? I mostly used woodworking blogs and websites for research, so of course I could be wrong. (Quick google search brings up this: "Wood stain is toxic during the application and drying processes, but is non-toxic after curing for 30 days.") It felt like it would just be such an arduous and potentially dangerous process, that I gave up on using it, especially since it apparently takes more than one coat of stain to achieve dark colours. If you do try wood stain, I'd be curious on any ways you might find to make it more convenient for doll room/diorama use! None of the paint/tea/coffee etc "faux wood stain" methods I've seen online seem to achieve the same look as true wood stain, but I just can't think of any way to make using real wood stain practical at a small scale. Maybe there's some sort of really small flat-top bead (or tiny thumbtack with pin part clipped off?) that could work as fake nails? It would give the 3D appearance and also not have to be physically nailed in like real nails. Otherwise, there's definitely small screws / nails that I think would be in scale if you're using large popsicle sticks, although I forget what size/type the screws are.
Hmmmm... fake nails... Try a tube of glass liner. It's a thick paint that dries hard like resin. And comes in most colors including black and silver. it takes 20 minutes to fully cure. Around the 10 to 12 minute mark you could flatten the dot to look like a nail head.
Whew ok I'm back home and brainstorming on things again. Nails... I like the suggested ideas for fake nails but I'm not sold on anything yet. Today I was just thinking I could use a teeny hole punch to punch holes into some sort of paper that would look like nails. This could provide that "3d" effect. My big boards are 1" across and I think about 3mm might work well for scale. But dang that's a lot of tiny things to glue down! I did find some dollhouse nails on etsy but they're made from brass so I don't think that would be very practical on a tiny scale. I think they're meant more for props than to be used. I might just skip the whole nail thing or save it for a really rainy day project! I kind of wonder if "glass liner" is the same as silicone? My dad used to work with glass so I'll have to ask him about it. Painting/Staining... So I did a little practice swipe with the acrylic ink I have, and the wood just ATE UP the ink. So I experimented some with priming. I tried a bit of Mod Podge and Liquitex Matte Medium. I like how the Liquitex came out so I'll go that route. I finally found my xacto knife so I was able to cut my boards in half. The wood is kind of soft so it wasn't too hard. I thought maybe it is balsa wood but it's not quite that light? I just scored it as deep as I could and then broke the board over the edge of my desk. Tomorrow I'll see about cleaning up any messy edges with sandpaper and or my "dremel" (a cheap ass efile I got awhile back). Then I gotta cut 2 strips of coroplast for the "overhang" that was created when I decided to expand the rooms. I might try to use cardboard to help save my coroplast (OR I rip up the "too small" floor and use it elsewhere and just cut that sheet up, that should be fine). I think I can just place the tile and board overhang onto the strips and stick/glue them in place and that should be fiiiiine. Totally fiiine. If not I'll use spare floor boards on the back to help stabilize it. Wednesday I have some super glue coming in that sounds like it'll work well. It's a thicker formula. My dad seemed to think it would work well. I'll be sure to do that, and the filing, outside. If the super glue doesn't work well I might just suck up my pride and buy a hot glue gun. But I WILL be bitchin about it the whole time! lol Wood floor attempt #2 by charlie, on Flickr In decorating news... I finally caved and bought some bedding for the larger dolls! I had a had choice between 2 different bedding sets but I ended up going for a more practical all-white set so there will be no worries about staining dolls and it'll fit several doll's vibes. I also gave up on the white wallpaper. I'll find some other use for it. Tonight I found some colorful stripy wallpaper that I think will be fun for the younger dolls. I can't remember if I mentioned but I have been planning to knit a blanket/throw for the bed. I have the pattern and yarn picked out. The yarn is really funky stuff but it catches the light in interesting ways and will fit the glam vibe for the minifees. AND I ordered a pile of stuff from BelachixDollWorld. I'm tempted to ask about adding more to my order. Becuase you know... birthday coming up. Some of it is furniture that will need to be assembled and painted and there totally isn't enough space for all that omgwhathaveidone. But it's fine! I am used to swapping furniture and doll out. OH, one more idea... I was thinking I could possibly use super strong magnets for hanging things on the wall. Super strong magnet on one side and a smaller on the other. That would make it easy to move things around. That's for future-me to think about though.
IDK if you found a solution yet, but jewelry wire is decent and stupid cheap- choose a gauge about as thick as a nail head for your doll. When I want to cut stuff that tends to fly off into the nether, I position my clipper, then put the clipper & item to be clipped into a sandwich bag and then clip it. It keeps any pieces all neat and in the bag. When I'm making nails this way, I poke a hole in the wood with a needle, put a drop of white glue on the clipped wire, then press it into the hole with a tweezer and leave it to dry. It seems like wire shouldn't work because there's no "head" to the nail, but remember you're just going to see the top part- no one will know how thin or thick the nail itself is, just how big around the top is. When you've stained your floor, it blends well and looks like a definite nail or staple. I got the trick from youtube miniaturist wAw Creator.
Ohhh that's a brilliant idea, thank you! I'm still waiting on glue to show up today so I guess it's not too late yet. I'm so tempted to try this...
Last night I sanded the ends (just rubbed the boards against coarse sand paper. Today I cut cardboard for the extension and glued all the boards down, sealed, and I JUST finished painting. In my defense.... I never said it would come out nice I feel like I should have just used my fingers because my test swatches looked much better with my fingers. Also I'm never doing a floor this large again. I'll let it dry over night and see what happens tomorrow... glued, sealed, painted by charlie, on Flickr
So all the sealing really helped hold the floor as I was hoping it would! So I threw together a quickie little scene just to see how it looks. I wasn't necessarily intending on this flooring with this sort of doll but I wanted to try it anyway. quick test with 1/6 bjd by charlie, on Flickr I'm excited for the wallpaper to get here tomorrow! There's all sorts of stuff I'm planning like painting/decorating the furniture, I'm crocheting a throw for the bed, thinking about weaving a rug...
Duuuude, that is looking really excellent. Seriously, great job on the flooring. And that test photo looks so gosh darn adorable!~ I love the teeny little furniture. And where did you get that little play-matt in such a tiny scale? Really cute!
thank you I'm glad you like it! I got the matt off eBay yeeeeaaars ago but I've seen the same thing occasionally pop up on Etsy! It's such a fun prop, the pieces even come apart! Thanks, I'm pretty happy with it!
So probably the last big update for awhile! New floor + new wallpaper by charlie, on Flickr I'm exhausted and my back is killing me but I came out the otherside with something not too shabby. There's a lot of imperfection but it's fine! Nothing that's ruining anything. A keen eye may notice there's a strip of naked board on the right hand side. That's because of a brain fart. I can either buy another pack of the boards and finish it and keep the boards for later, or just put that task in the "Future Me's Problem" pile. My next step is to glue down all the edges of the wallpaper and trim overhanging edges. I still need to get a glossy varnish, maybe I'll order that tonight. Eventually I'm thinking I might as well pick up one more roll of the stripy wallpaper and the black so I can make a 3rd wall. I'm thinking I won't connect them up, just keep them hanging out on their own for more flexibility. I think I'll probably paint the yellow shelf to white or keep it as is and use it in some other way setting. I haven't thought any more on crown molding/baseboards, etc but it would still be nice to do eventually. I think I'll take a break from all the "building" and think more on decorating and wait for all the goodies I've ordered to show up and just enjoy what I've done so far. I really want to start on a 1/6 scale set or 2 for my off topic dolls and my Barbie sized BJD. Last night I was THISCLOSE to buying one of those premade laser cut room boxes off etsy so I don't have to think about putting together walls and floors.
Golly, that certainly came together beautifully! I think you're right about the yellow shelves though, maybe a baby blue or eggshell white would tie it better with the rest of the room. Still, fantastic work! Be proud of yourself
It came out so well! The furniture really brings it together nicely. That idea about using magnets on each side to hang up wall decor without damaging the wallpaper is also so smart!
Amazing! All the work turned into something quite beautiful! Never thought about using magnets but that’s a genius move to keep the wallpaper fresh.
Thanks everyone! Today I finally got around to tidying up the edges of the wallpaper and I decorated a little dresser I bought years ago. (IG link to video). The bed looks great with the black walls too! Also, the bedding showed up for the bigger white bed, it's amazing (I crocheted the pink blanket) Sorry for the IG links but that seemed like a better place to put those particular things, since flickr has restrictions now. And, I didn't take a pic but I got the butterflies off the pink/white bed and I have been trying to figure out how I want to decorate it. I think it would be cute to put stickers all over it (either the head/sideboards or the sides) but I haven't found the perfect ones yet. I used to have some cute "flakies" that were itty bitty and super cute but I must have used them for something because I can't find them now. I've been looking at little nail stickers as well. OH! I was thinking glow in the dark stars could be fun! I found some on Amazon and some slime sprinkles on Etsy. I haven't bought either yet. If I can figure out how to make them repositionable so I can keep the walls changeable then I'll get them. I'm thinking I can use a little bit of tacky stuff.
ok long story short I saw someone do doll-sized wallpaper strips for their doll room and I thought dang that is a good idea so I redid my black walls. It will be so much easier to do from the roll but now I have little to no wrinkles or bubbles! And if the seems show it'll just look like wallpaper seems and I think that'll just add some nice sort of detail or depth to the wall. I also taped on a 3rd wall because I'm loving the 3rd wall vibe. I'll be redoing the stripey room probably tomorrow, and already have 3 walls prepared for it. I needed more of each wallpaper anyway so I'm reordering some more tonight. Now my brain is on windows and doors but I'm trying not to think of it until I've played with the rooms more! One of my minifees has claimed the dresser I decorated, and the yellow shelf I wasn't sure what to do with. I thought she would share the bedroom with the other minifee but the dolls want what they want. She wants a livingroom and or office so now I'm looking at wallpaper for that! She already has a desk and other furniture on the way but it won't be here til end up June or July. And I'm considering some American Girl sized furniture for a couch. V picking out her new furniture by charlie, on Flickr OH and last night I found out that there is basically WOOD TAPE. Like tape, that is wood. Actually it's veneer but look, this would make such a great flooring! They also sell it in sheets. And I think it's actually PVC but some I think is real wood. But it could also be used to make wainscoting or beadboard. I saw someone on TikTok color it with "wood wax" (they might have meant stain?) and it looked beautiful. I'm thinking V (the aforementioned minifee) might need some beadboard in her space so what I might do is use some cardboard or something a little thinner, cover it in the veneer and use some kind of wood strips and/or weatherstripping (I can't remember who here recommended that) to add finishing touches. The veneer is thick enough that I think it will add enough dimension to be convincing. I was thinking I'd just paint the whole thing white so maybe the veneer stuff would be a little overkill for that BUT it would be a lot easier than cutting up, painting and gluing more wood. It would also be less weight and bulk than wood sticks. I'm not jumping on this idea yet, just brainstorming. One other thing I've got brewing in my noggin is some kind of platform for the room to go on. It's bothering my back way too much to have it sitting on the floor. Last night I realized that the livingroom coffee table is the PERFECT table to keep the doll room on + the space underneath would provide a ton of storage which would help tidy up my space quite a bit. But I love that table exactly where it's at and I don't want to spend the money to buy a new one. I can't find similar tables for cheaper so my other thought is to get 2-4 plastic storage drawers that it could sit on top of. This would limit the places I can keep the room but it would provide a surface and storage. *edit* Forgot to mention I have been looking at furniture building videos. I'd rather just buy a couch but I might be able to do something like this myself.
a little update! I ended up making some bead board/wainscoting! I have one more section to paint and then I'll glue them down. I was thinking of making them usable on any wall but I wasn't a fan of how they looked on the striped wallpaper. I wouldn't mind doing something similar for the black wallpaper someday but I'm not in a hurry. So I used the aforementioned veneer "tape" on foam board and painted it with chalk paint. The veneer stuff certainly isn't the cheapest choice but was the funnest and easiest. I did a pretty bad job of cutting the pieces to the right length but it should be hidden pretty well with a strip of "baseboard". I'll also be adding a basic trim along the top edge to finish the look up a bit. So blahblahblah here's what I've got. It's not super accurate to how beadboard looks but I think it's going to work really well! beadboard in progress by charlie, on Flickr
