Aesthetics My Unexpected First Faceup

Jan 24, 2014

    1. Hey guys, I was unexpectedly throwninto my first ever faceup last night. I'd decided to adjust Amadeo's current face up byblushing his nose, cheeks and eyes pink to make it look like he'd been crying and adding gloss to his lips to try and define them more.

Well I did that and I was fairly pleased withthe result, sprayed him and it all came out white because i'd totally forgotten to shake the bottle. I was absolutely gutted and tried to get it off but couldn't so I ended up wiping him instead. Then I was so sad looking at his blank head that I decided to try and do something with him.

That's how Amadeo started off before I tried to improve him yesterday. It's just the faceup he came to me with. I'd already checked with the seller (a friend of mine) that I could adopt the character as well as the doll so i've tried to keep his little sad face. Because I hadn't been intending to do a full faceup I didn't have any real supplies like good paints, water colour pencils, a varietyof pastels or a thin brush XD so a lot of it is make do but i'm still much happier than just leaving him blank!

There's a lot of problem areas I can see (like his eye creases which I totally just messed up) but there are other things i really love, like his little pale lips and his red eyes/nose/cheeks from crying.

I'm planning tontry and get my hands on some proper supplies and do him again but i'd love your opinions on what I can do to improve, what you think of the overall look/concept etc etc. (btw the grey in his eyebrows/eyelashes is actually silver, its really pretty and glinty in real life though i think way too thick). Also, what do you think of the 3D blood tear? Its the only part i did have proper supplies for (gel medium that Ihad for use on a different doll) but I worry that it cuts off too much of his lashes.

Anyway, yeah, basically any constructive criticism would be greatly appreiated and will help me make the best decisions as to what i should buy and what I should do next time. Thank you All!

    2. I want to give that poor thing a hug! I like the tear but maybe try just using some paint/pastel for the color and then hit it with some gloss? Letting it sit flat, the 3D aspect of it makes it slightly distracting, and he has such a lovely face.

    3. I find that it's always best to mix your own black rather than use black out of the bottle. You can mix ultramarine blue and burnt umber in various ratios to get cooler and warmer blacks, and you can tint them as well with a smidgen of whatever colors you like. Hand-mixed black gives so much more depth!

    4. If you can dilute the black a little so it's not as stark, every other area has a soft look to it, which is great, I like the eyebrows and lids, the line work is good also on the eyebrow creases, if you try to soften the shade of black used slightly, it would help.
The blood tears concept is great with his gorgeous eyes, I love the expression on his face.
You did a great job. You don't need a ton of supplies, the primary colors are red blue and yellow, the foundation of every single colour and shade there is, I used to specialize in colour mixing, when on a budget, or in short supply, those three colours, and a clear medium or water, which is used to lighten the shade, produce pastels, silvers, golds etc...
Also, what the poster above is talking about which is cool by the way, are base colours. If you want a cold black, you would use a black made up of mostly blue, blues are cool color.
If you wanted a black closer to a darkest brown, sable, umber etc, you add red until you achieve that, reds being warm colours. Actually Umber, is red and yellow concentrated..
the formula for black, is red, yellow and blue.
Blue black, use more blue aka blue base
Black with red base, use more red
In reality, we use base colours also to neutralize tones, we don't like on our canvas, for example..if you dyed your hair black, and it looks green, you would have to add red to the new formula to eliminate green.
Overly pink areas, on a face, you can rub a little green correction stick, before the concealer.
The theory behind this is, back to the primary colors, one color will neutralize, the product of the others.
Not trying to give a colour lecture, just hope that helps.
