My Tiny Sculpt "Narn" human and "Arium" Elf. Latest Pics page 5 in blue resin :)

Jun 6, 2007

    1. Family Photo on page 5 with blue resin, tanned and skin tone

Thanks to everyone for their encouragement!! I've finally finished a mother cast of Narn, I have to tweak a couple of things so he/she stands better but the body is posing beautifully and the resin tests have come out great so I have the skin tone ready to go!!

      Hi All,
This is my first Sculpt "Narn"

He's/She's sculped entirely from Super Sculpy, it took almost 2 thirds of a pack (1lb/454gms) to get to this point. For the joints I've used wooden beads (many thanks to dolly_daydream website for the pointer) and as the hands are so tiny I've used glass pearls. My intention is to cast him in resin, so I'll add pins to the wrist for stringing during the casting process :)

If his arms look unusually long for his body its because the elbow sockets do not yet fit in to the upper arm, I have to shape the socket with a dremel so they slot together nicely. Also I made the fingers extra long to allow me to shorten them whilst sanding.

Any comments or constructive criticisms are welcome and encouraged, or else how does one learn :) I'll continue to update the photos as he comes together so please come back and let me know what you think.

Full length shot, hands not attached yet :)

      His really cute tushie...

    2. :bump for some help!! I'm not sure about the face what do you think about the proportions?

    3. He's sooo cute! I think it's very well proportioned! I love the tush ;)

    4. I also think the face looks really cute. ^^
And his little fanny, hands and feet look so real !

I can`t wait to see him finished. Good job !

    5. I love the bum. Can you show more pictures of the joints, i want to see how you did them >< if you dont mind.

    6. Very good for a first sculpt! He is looking wonderful ;)
These doll we make are so much work, but so worth it once they are done (mine are in the casting process now, so almost done lol).

    7. For advice on the face, it's looking really good to me, all I would recommend is a little tidying up, so maybe make a cleaner edge round the bottom of the eyes by shaving a thin bit off with an exacto knife, that'll give you a nice crisp edge to paint, and maybe sand the lips a little so the bottom lip sticks out a little less.

That's all I can suggest really, he looks really good to me.

    8. He looks really good and I love the bum. How big is he going to be?

    9. wow, thanks guys for the great comments, I was really nervous about posting here!!
Lolipop The lips are giving me hell!! They have been the hardest part so far!!
      Far2Frail He's 25cm tall so he's a Tiny, with big attitude!!
Soshi I dont mind at all, I've almot finished sanding him, and I've cut the slots for the joints so as soon as I get the pics uploaded to the server I'll post them here!!

Yeah, he has a cute tush, I hate seeing dolls with flat bums!!

    10. Hi again all, Well I'm making some progress!! I've had two sick kids off kindy so my work time has been limited to about an hour each day and then after they are in bed at night so its a little slow going but Narns mould boxes are all ready to go go I just have to finish faring him up, I'm not sure if I should give him a coat of spray putty to get a nice finish, i was able to get some Mr Surfacer so I'm going to give that a go first and see how it comes out. I re-shaped the eyes and though its hard to see I've refined his mouth a bit so it looks like he's half way through blowing a kiss!!

Just FYI his character is a insect/human hybrid so he'll comes with a crysalis, wings and little antenae on his wig to match his butterfly/human twin sister Arium (secret project) I'm dying to have him finished but my other babies kinda come first!! Let me know what you think?

Lover half, having a few issues with ankles, they stand really sturdy but dont have a great deal of mobility, so I'm working on that, do the legs look too thin in the thigh and too thick in the calf?

With upper torso, do you think the join between them looks strange? I'm wondering if it should be finer? it bends nicely though; forwards and backwards. Plus the head with re-shaping of the eyes and mouth, I wanted bigger eyes with a bit of expression, kind of surprised and inquisitive he'll fit a 14mm eye nicely. And because of his character I thought a bug eyed look would suit him nicely? Whats your opinion? I also sanded the lower half of his cheeks and under his chin to make it a bit finer and not so boxy...?

    11. Oh also the legs in the first pic only look different lengths, its just that he's standing askew and the angle of the photo, they are actually the same length!!

    12. WOW, wonderful progress! The legs fit amazingly together. Do you have any tips for that, I'm having a terrible time getting mine to fit together properly! The Sculpy keeps deforming.

    13. I know what you mean, i cheated a little bit I guess. I used the bead to shape the socket and kinda shaped the leg as one piece on the front with a big gap at the back of the knee, I cut through the front with a blade before I baked it and now I'm trying to sand it so they fit right and lock back a bit for stability. I'm still sanding the angles so he can sit back a bit further...

    14. Wonderful work! Am looking forward to your progress

    15. :bump: for input, I'm not looking for praise and compliments, I just wanted some more feedback on how you think he's looking with attention to specifics, imagine someone was making it for YOU and you wanted to critique certain things like the leg thickness, face symetry etc..... Pretty Please?

    16. What will the ears look like ;) I love the face and body sculpt!

    17. thanks Hillbilly Bunny :) I'm working on the ears at the moment, down side to attaching unbaked sculpy to baked sculpy is it doesnt like to stick!! So I'm having a s**t of a time right now, but I'll have new pics for Wednesday :)

    18. I think he's ADORABLE!!! I'd buy him! :D I'm very intersted if you get him cast! :D (Do you plan to? Or is he a One off?)

I will say however, i'm not crazy tho, about how his thigh's attach to the ball-joint. If it were me, i'd sculpt them as one solid, smooth piece. :) But that's me. I'm wierd LOL

    19. comicbookartistboi: *breathe* No not all all weird, I agreed totally about the thigh joint, I've filled it with epoxy putty since these pics were taken to make a smoother line on the upper leg, and yeah he's my second baby to be cast, my first was porcelain mind you so this is a totally different ball park to play in!!

And I'm still not happy about his noggin!! I'm not sure whats bugging me but I've put it away for a bit to finish off the body. I'll get back to it when I have a clearer head!! Thanks for the input, I really need it!!

    20. when you cast them, will you be selling them? I'd DIE to do a face-up on one! LOL How much are you going to charge (Guesstimate?)

    21. cost plus a bit for time, I guess when I'm a super star and outselling Cerebrus Project Dolls I might up my prices :lol a girl can dream right? *laughing*

I have the mold boxes ready to go and the klean klay ready to smoosh all I hav to do is stop altering his eye sockets!! I just cant get happy with them... confused myself by making them too big to fit 14mm eyes then too small for 12mm and now they arent even there so he's asleep untill I get the shape right... or maybe I'll mould a sleeping head to stat?

No seriously once I work out if he's even worth selling I'll let you know :) but i will cast him in resin at least once for me :aheartbea to go with his twin sister

    22. hehehe HE HAS EARS!!!! I've given him a coat of Gesso so I can see the flaws *blinded by them* phew there are a few more than I'd expected but now I ger to sand him with a foam block at least!! its much easier!!! I settled on 14mm eyes and made the actual peepers a little smaller to go with his pouty little smooshie kiss

(loving him too much *squee* I want to just squeeze his cheeks)

LMK WYT!? (trans: let me know what you think :))

sorry the pics so small, I downsized too much in photobucket....

I put the head cap on backwards... :doh
      [IMG]

    23. Wow, wonderful job so far. Both ears appear in the right spot :)

I cant wait to see more.
How did you smooth out the nose/eye region without hitting any other part of the face when smoothing out the clay?

    24. Thanx soshi!!

      I used my finger :)

while the sculpy was unbaked and then after I crunched up the sand paper to make it as soft as possible, put it over the end of a pencil (with a rounded end) and gently but firmly stroked either side of the bridge and in the corners of the eyes, I stuffed it up at least 3 times thats why I kept changing the shape of the eyes, just practice I guess, and hopefully I'll get better at it :)

My son was the guinea pig for ears... a little bit of a wing-nut I LOVE wing-nuts there is something so goofy and endearing about sticky-outy ears :aheartbea I need to take a better pic than on my mobile but patience was never one of my virtues!! He looks a little lopsided in pic 1 but his face is almost symetrical..

(impatient and anal!! makes for many repeats of sanding!!)

    25. I find it great that you used a pencil. I did the same thing for my face. It worked quite well, but my lips had so much retardation that i had to do several shots at it.

    26. He's looking really cute, but it would be great to see bigger/sharper photos. :)

    27. Thanx Logodae... and here they are. I could wait to take them after Id sanded so he looks rough, I still have to put several more layers of gesso on, lots of brush marks etc but I'll sand him up tonight and you will get to see him assembled in the next couple of days :)

    28. There's a small lack of symmetry on the head, even now.

The left (his right) side is taller and squarer, and his right eye (on left, still) is smaller.

Try holding the head so you can see the face in the mirror, as this is a dominant-eye issue, and the mirror makes your dominant eye over-emphasize the other way.

      Ann in CT

    29. Thanks Ann in CT, Thats why I had to paint him prematurely in Gesso so my eyes had something new to look at. I took heaps of pics from different angles to help get the symetry right. I dont know if you picked but his mouth and nose are on a slight angle rather on a central line down his face? Not to worry, the sanding will smooth it all out (he has a thick skull) But none-the less I still want to smoosh him :)

    30. Oww... gesso. That evil substance that takes WAY too much work and peels off.

Take it from someone that already failed with that method (if you sand too far down to the point where the original material shows, it starts to peel from that point.

I highly recommend spray auto primer. No brush strokes, and it doesn't peel! Super easy to get to a perfect finish with a bit of wet sanding with a fine sanding sponge.

      Good luck!

    31. Renzi what brand are you using? I'm using Jo Sonjas and I havent had it peel before? Maybe it was the brand you used. I do have Mr Surfacer and Auto Primer but because I'm never satisfied I'm rebuilding parts with extra sculpy & I dont want to bake an enamel paint.... it'll make my oven very sad!! Once I get the initial surface nice and even (not flawless) I'll give hom a spray coat with Auto Primer to shine himup and get the flawless finish then before I cast him I'll use Mr Surfacer 1000, in my test casts it gives a less shiny finish :)

    32. Hmm, don't remember what brand it was, but it almost ruined my girl. (All I know is that it was the expensive junk my school store sells.)

Maybe gesso sticks better to Sculpey then paperclay then? I would think it'd be worse. XD

    33. He is so totally gorgeous ^__^

If you cast some to sell I would be interested.... me likey!

    34. I think his facial features are accurate but like you I dunno if I'm o.k. with his head. Maybe the size of the head fot the body. But maybe you intended for the head to be the size it is, sorta like some dolls I have seen.

    35. I think your proportions look great. 8D Sometimes I see people make the head way too big, but you got this perfect. :3 He looks great! 8D

    36. ameiru Thanks for the input :) I like big heads I know thats its a personal preference, but I guess its like my odd facination with ears too :lol

renzi No probs still with the gesso, though I did scrub it all off thismorning as I needed to re-shape the lips again, once thats done I'm going auto primer!! But now I'm nervous!!!

randomrainbowfairy I might cast a few for sale, but comicbookartistboi has dibs on the first one though :) I promised!!

Pawpaw I could hug you!! Thanks, I wanted a bigger head because deep down in that resin heart he's a bug!! This will be his normal head, and I want to sculpt a second one with a 'bug face' Also I used my son for proportions as he's the same age as Narn and has the some wingnut ears that I love so much!!

    37. Whitewings, you are doing such a great job! Did you use wooden ball joints?
And you attached them with epoxy, is that correct? Or did you attach the ball joints with something else and just use the epoxy to build up the thighs?
I know what you mean by loving the little ears...my grandson has the cutest ears that stick out...so endearing! Gotta love em!

    38. BIG LOVES FOR BIG EARS......
I initially just shaped the sculpy around the wooden beads, then after they were baked I pulled the beads off and replaced them with round balls of sculpy as its much easier to cut than the wooden balls.....

But I'm on holidays as of Friday in Italy so I wount be posting any pics untill I get back but when I do, comicbookartistboi I'll PM you about the face-up ok? That and he's ready to be cast, Cant wait to show you all. It took a little longer to prep all the molds but they are all half poured and I'll finish them off tomorrow. But I wont get to the first cast untill I get home, too much pressure!!

    39. oh, hehehe i just PMd ya LMAO but now i see ya got to me here :D I can't wait to see piccies! :D

    40. Hey CBAB (too long to type....phew...) I've just sent you a PM back :) But I'm going home next week, we're in Florence and decided to head home early so good news is I'll be able to put up the pics I took of Narn, since he had a face-lift and nose-job and collagen into his lips!! and I attached his little ehem... he's been sanded primed and finished and I've made the moulds of his hands feet and torso so I hope to cast a full doll by about the second week of September!!! Ye haa, cant wait for you to see his little face now I fixed up the symetry problems!!!

    41. OMgosh! I'm so excited! I cannot WAIT to see your adorable boy! I fell in love with the most basic form, i cannot imagine what he's going to come out like!!!!

    42. You are just too sweet!!

Heres a couple of progress pictures of the work I did on his noggin and his upper torso and lower body. I decided against his "bit" as it kept comming off when his legs were swariko (pics comming later) because I made his pelvis rounded off for better sitting he has to go without a penis untill I work out how to make it stay put!! (sounds ridiculous - making me laugh just typing it!) I also sanded out the final scratches beside his nose and the corners of his eyes and gave him another couple of coats of Mr Surfacer 500 and then 1000, it gives such a nice finish!!

I havent made the mould for his hands yet- they are giving me so much grief if any one can help me out here, I keep breaking his fingers and have had to re-make his left hand. If you have any ideas about how to sand them effectively TELL ME!!!!!!

He has no belly button either as after carving it in and bogging it 3 times I decided it can wait untill further notice!! Now I'm trying to work out how to get the magnets into his back during casting for his insect wings...?

I'll take some pics of him 1" under sillicone when my kids are at school, I've taken step by step photos for reference of the entire casting too - soooo many its silly :)

    43. Yes she's really cute:) . Kawai face!

    44. I love his little feet, they came out so good!

    45. He be so Cyooot!! I loves him to death! *snuggles the little guy*

    46. He looks really cute ^.^ Congrats

    47. Ooh, I really love his head mold *3* great job!

    48. I'm can't wait when you finish your cute doll!

    49. Thanks to all for the encouragement!! I've finally got the pins out of my wrist and hand from my accident and am now in a regular cast for 4 weeks so i'm back at work this week and working OVERTIME to get the casting finished so I can put him up for sale in time for Christmas :) (Jordan I just sent you an e-mail to with new pickies before I post them here :aheartbea )

    50. Thankies :) I'm so very much looking forward to working with you! :) I can't wait to see them fully cast! :) I'm glad your arm is getting better! :)

Regarding the magnets in his back, there are these CRAZY strong jewelry magnets. You can get them at Black market minerals. They are designed for making jewelry. They look like beads, shaped like a barrel. If you find the proper bit size, you could always drill the holes into the back post casting, and then glue them in with super glue. Then just glue the opposite magnets into the wing bases. :) Just a suggestion :) Or, you could maybe drill the holes into the test cast, and then make sure the magnets fit, and just cast them all with holes already in the back. One REALLY cool thing you could do, is make the magnet go UNDER the surface of the resin...that way, there is no visible magnet to see...but when you put another magnet there, CLICK! It sticks. :) I've seen that on some toys. :) These magnets are so strong, you could put one on the inside of a doll's head, and put the other on the outside, and it would not only stick, but HOLD.

    51. Wow! This is amazing! And so cute! That little tush is adorable XD!

    52. Very cute!!

    53. Well..... here he is in resin :) like I said he needs a few tweaks before I can do final molds, this is just the mother cast so I have to spray him again and sand a few little flaws that I've noticed etc... and then bog into the silicone again :) I've not yet taken his little sister out of the molds yet so when she's assembled I'll post new piccys :aheartbea: Thanks for all your comments!! Its like putting your soul on-line posting these pictures!!

    54. Really cute!!

    55. oh wow :3 he's SO adorable <3 *giggle* i I wanted a child doll, I'd go for him ;3 (but I like more mature dolls XP) but even for the mother cast, he's still well done :3 (better by far then I'll probably ever be able to do)

    56. I would be great to see how you did your mother molds. Do you have pictures? can you take step to step ones next time you make your next mother?

    57. WOW!~~ Amazing!!~~ He's very cute~~!!

    58. Hi TreeLore, yes I did take HEAPS of pictures as I did the molding process, I was going to edit them together and put them in as a tutorial for anyone who want to give it a go.

It wasn't as hard as I had initially thought but I did take a course in silicone molding and resin casting after I messed it up a couple of times :doh Now I'm learning how to add UV stabilisers and resin fillers to make the smaller dolls heavier (so they stand without blowing over) and give them a bit of sun protection. Its been an incredible process and so much fun!! Eventually I think I'll offer a casting service...? (I much prefer casting to sculpting)

    59. Oh how interesting its nice to hear you enjoyed the process I think there is something magical about it!

Yes please do put it together I would LOVE to see the process as would many! there can never be enough tutorials because a few more bits of info can fill in the missing pieces to the story!
