I started making a ball jointed doll! So far I have been making my prototype from sculpey, but I'll be making a mold very soon from what I have so far (mostly so I can refine it more, as the sculpey is starting to get weak) The doll is very small, the torso is just under three inchs from shoulder to crotch, and the head is just over 1 1/4". It takes rather large eyes, I may change that later; Ive already decided to shorten the neck and re-shape the pecs a bit. I started this doll because I wanted to give the process a try before I moved on to making some thing larger, and I also love the tiny dolls! Any way, enough blab. As I said, I'll be sanding and changing it more once Ive made a cast.
"My, what big eyes you have..." That is so cute, you've made great progress already. It could be like a doll for your doll, like JeannieKroese is making. You might want to make the skull-cap a bit deeper so the head doesn't look so flat. I'm also interested in how you will be casting it. All you doll makers are very inspiring... I should get started on my own as well, but I really should finish some other projects first.
I'll be making a mold with brush on latex mold builder. The first cast will more than likely be the clear casting resin since I have that in my studio already ops: but I will be doing later ones with better resin. As for the skull cap, I forgot to mention on here, its not attatched in the pictures, and it shifted so it is deeper than it looks, but I may make it deeper yet. I'll try and take a better picture of it later so you can let me know what you think!
I loved seeing your little doll in person today. I can't wait to see future progessions. Oh yea and i told you i would weight my doll so you know how much resin to get...ill do that tomorrow when i get up. its been a busy day.
Yey! Thanks so much! ops: For this one, it shouldnt be a big deal, but in the future that will come in very handy!
Ah haha! So adorable! I also started building a similarly sized doll, though it does not have ball joints. For the sake of experiment I started making it, I don't think iw ill be building a larger one though.
very good so far!!! I've also started a tiny BJD some time ago but do not have the time to go on with the project... and also don't know how to make her (it was made of fimo, polimeric clay, cause I do not know where to find resin!!!) She has a strange but cute face ^____^ very interesting!!
Thanks! I hope to put in some work on them next week, since I'll be less busy then. Iam thinking about making a sleepy head from this one to start with, ops: since then I dont have to stress over sizing the eye holes inside!
Wooo! Updated version of the head, now with ears! I also did a tiny bit of smoothing, but Iam takign a mold today, so I can make a copy to work on! I also made the head a bit deeper, and added some shape around the neck socket.
ooh! I like the new version of the head!!! I'm so impatient, i wanna see it all done! I can't well (well, i mean I can, but I don't want to...) It's very cute!!!!
Photo of the mold (in progress) I think Iam sensitive to the latex! I'll have to switch to some thing else ASAP.
 Also made a pair of eyes, Iam adding more glaze to them now. The iris is a bit un-even in shape on one of them, and tehy are not a perfect match, but I think they came out very nice for a first try (and being 8mm)
The greatest thing in the world about making a lil doll is that it wont take mutch silicone to mold it  I would imagine for something the size of your lil doll you could get by with a gallon,.. maybe even less I love the color of those eyes you made!
Eeek. If you're sensitive to latex, you should totally switch to a different mold medium. Liquid latex is nasty stuff if you're allergic. ^_^* There are lots of other media out there. Good luck!
From what I understand the silicone picks up fine details better, and makes a longer lasting mold any way! I should see if Tammies carries it, and if not order some online. ops: On the plus, the mold did come out pretty nicely.
I have a latex allergy, too. It's no fun ;_; But there are non-latex gloves that you can get at a medical store, and use those while you work. Your doll is looking fab so far! I can't wait to see the finished product
Yey! I changed the head. A lot. I reshaped the eyes, slimmed the nose, trimmed the lower lip, and Iam yet to reshape the upper lip (it was rather uneven, I noticed when I turned a photo upside down) Any way, I need to finidh re-shaping, then I'll sand it up again. I think it looks much better now The pink on the lip is from where I did a test paint, a bit of it stained ops: but thats okay. That reminds me, speaking of stains, if you look at the first post, there is a big grey streak on the side of the head, its from the print on a paper towel. I hadnt noticed when i did it until it was already set, and I caught myself almost doing that again today. So dont use printed paper towels for this sort of thing ops:
Another set of cahnges to the head. I fixed the upper lip, evened out the jaw line and made fuller cheeks. The upper lip is the same shape as before, it washed out in the picture, but its still very full, I evened the shape by adding a dab more clap to the small side.
ops: I got the funniest comment on this from a friend today: "That thing is creepy. Why are you making it? To sell to Tim Burton?" hahaha! Priceless. I love my friends!
^ I must say the new face looks really good, better than the first in a sense it looks more realistic and child like. It has such adorable cheeks like a petite ai Lovely work! I can't wait to see how this turns out, good luck!
 Thanks you guys! Iam thinking about doing some more heads in this size (and stop poking at this one, since its in a nice place) Ive changed the body a lot as well, but I need to build some areas up before I post ops:
ooh! i do like the newest head...although i was getting rather attached to the first one...i'd like to see the new one with eyes in. It's very cute!
Wow she's so cute and tiny! Can I ask what clay you used to sculpt her with? I want to start my own soon and I'm trying to figure out what clay to try first.
